It is pretty funny the movies and directors that are being used to counter/explain/etc....the problems that some are seeing with this project.

IMO, the only fair comparison would be with a movie franchise that ....

1. Has a history of failure...
2. Has a director with (for all practical purposes when comparing to say a Jackson) little experience...
3. Has a studio that through the history of their franchise, cut corners at every turn...

So, find me a movie that meets all of those things, and then the comparison is a fair one IMO...

Am I still hoping for a good movie? Heck yeah.....but I'm not naive.

So this is basically Kinberg's film? This is like Donner/Lester's Superman 2.

This is what I have learned, if I ever make anything that cultivates a fan base. I'm going to stay away from any message boards dedicated it and I'd rarely interact with them online.

I honestly believe those rumors that when Fox execs saw the finished product, they didn't like it and Kinberg is cleaning up some of Trank's mess. Kinberg is being said to be more so in the driver's seat that Trank is at this point.

I think what gives this credibility is that when those rumors started popping up, Kinberg came out and tried to directly dispute them by saying the reshoots were very brief and nothing special. But now we know that's clearly not true. So why did he lie?

Damage control.

The movie was/is a mess and they're scrambling to fix it as much as possible.

They probably won't.

I'll admit I'm a bit worried about the reshoots. But until I see anything from the actual film to give me cause for concern, I'm not about to lose faith. My biggest worry is that Fox is trying to turn the film into a more conventional superhero movie.

Just to summarize for those who weren't around for all of this, on January 15, Bleeding Cool reported:

We get the word that people at Fox are not happy with the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, directed by Josh Trank. While some have called it “Chronicle 2 rather than Fantastic 4″ , this is clearly not what the studio was looking for.

One well-connected senior executive described it to me as “a mess”. And multiple sources are telling me about major disquiet at Fox regarding the state of the movie.

A year ago, I was directly told by primary sources that Fox were approaching other directors and writers to take on the project and start from scratch, though they didn’t find anyone willing. Fox denied this at the time.

As it stands, I’m told that reshoots are now being demanded, that millions of dollars are being freed up for the purpose and sets are being rebuilt in Louisiana.

Kinberg responded:

To confirm – Fantastic Four will be doing 3-4 days of additional photography with director Josh Trank and some key cast members. We are very excited about the film and can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been up to. And you will be able to do that very soon as I can confirm here that the teaser will be on Kingsman in theaters February 13.

But then we saw from multiple sources such as this:

That things were still happening weeks later and all the way up until March 25:

And now Tim Blake Nelson is saying he will be shooting next week. Into May.

Not only is it insane to spend more time on reshoots than principle photography, but it certainly looks like Simon Kinberg flat out lied and that lie was in direct response to reports that the film was a mess and Fox was very unhappy with it.

Is there any logical interpretation at this point other the original report was probably true?

Nope.

Even outside of my bias, this film will probably be a mess.

Said by who.

Somewhere in this thread. :o

If this thing doesn't turn a profit, Fox will look like idiots. Daredevil was panned(though I liked it)but turned a small profit. Once Marvel get it back, look at how people are clamoring for more of it. Marvel even had a plan for the Defenders and almost seem forced to do a season 2, even though they had the series lined up a certain way. I can see Fox not wanting history to repeat itself which is why they are doing reshoots. Can you imagine if they fail after 3 tries and Marvel does it once and gets it right? It's why they are doing these reshoots. I honestly think the key to F4 is getting Doom right, which they seem obsessed with changing for some reason.

Reshoots for blockbusters are a normal thing so it's difficult to know if these reshoots mean anything. If it's extensive reshoots then I think that points to issues but in general I'm leery of overreacting to reshoots because some fans always react negatively to reshoots even when they are no big deal.

This is what I have learned, if I ever make anything that cultivates a fan base. I'm going to stay away from any message boards dedicated it and I'd rarely interact with them online.

What I have learned is that if I create anything, art, literature, in my case...curriculum, then you need to grow thicker skin because if you can't take the heat, then you need to keep your creation under wraps, because not everyone is going to like everything you create.

That 3 or 4 days of reshoots stuff was obviously a lie though, that much is for sure.

And honestly it wouldn't surprise me if Fox upped the budget and action to compete with other Superhero films.

Reshoots are not uncommon. Especially if the movie was shown to a focus group for opinions of the original draft. World War Z was basically reshot because the audience didn't grasp the original take, and that made boat loads.

If reshoots are not done to make a movie bad, its done to make it better. People should be happy about that. Especially after the co-chairman of Fox said that they care about what the fanboys think.

That is probably the case. It's their only Superhero movie this year. After a year of being the biggest studio of 2014, and they are releasing a three X-Men films next year? They probably decided to go a more superhero route in order to maintain the good reception from fans and critics.

There is no evidence that reshoots have been going on day in and day out since January. It is a pretty big assumption to make without anything outside of tweets from body doubles and extras. I believe it that the key cast were there, and possibly for no more than 3-4 days - they have all been working on other major projects since Fantastic Four went into post production. Miles Teller has filmed 3 movies in that time! The key cast members are pretty recognizable - if they were spending large amounts of time in Baton Rouge, we would probably know about it. This reminds me of the assumptions made by many here not too long ago - several people were 100% CONVINCED that the entire film was a sham, and there was no work going on at all. It was all just a conspiracy to get Marvel to make a move and give Fox lots of $$. Obviously that wasn't the case. I too hope the movie is as good as it can be, and if they need to work until the last minute to present their best work, they should.

Growing thicker skin is the easy thing to say but its nowhere near that simple. Fans can be real *******s and you know that. I'm a Star Wars fan also and the prequels weren't a kind time in the universe. The kid who played Anakin in the Phantom Menace had a hard time afterwards. George Lucas kids have had to grow up with idiots saying terrible things about their father for making the movies he wanted. There is difference between being critical and being an asshat.

Kinberg was clearly caught in a lie when people have stated that there's trouble on the set of this thing. If there was nothing there then why lie? Not saying this thing will bomb because I honestly don't think it will but to say that the production hasn't been odd is just flat out denial.

We didn't exactly get a lot of photos or news about them during principle photography.

Its understandable that they would say things to save face. If its a disaster happening behind the scenes they sure as hell won't admit it.

I hope the reshoots do away with the Domashev stuff and just call him Doom from the beginning.

I never said reshoots have been going on for months, nowhere in my post do I say that. More than 3 or 4 days obviously happened though so Kinberg did lie.

I'm also not in a fantasy land that believes that this production hasn't had troubles that the studio obviously doesn't want the public to know about. I think something is going on with Josh Trank in particular.

I doubt any perceived troubles with this production is all that extraordinary. It's a workplace and not all them are great for everybody. Charlize Theron confirmed the troubles on Mad Max Fury not that long ago.

Who really cares about Mad Max though? This is a property people really care about.
