G.I. Joe Anti-Hype

shipwreck_full.jpg

Plain old exciting, if you ask me.

If that were in the movie, i'd be excited :woot:

Isn't GI Joe a conglomeration of The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard? If I remember the Cartoon series, that's basically what GI Joe was. They all had different uniforms representing their branch of the United States Military. All they did in the movie was to make sure they were one unit by giving them one look and not just a group of soldiers from The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard in different uniforms.

I had hope with the first released image of Snake-Eyes. However, when that was followed with the shots of the rest of the cast, along with showing the stupid design of Snake-eyes having a sculpted mouth instead of a damn balaclava.

This thread has convinced me that discussing this movie online prior to release is probably a waste of my time. I think I'm just going to just wait and then go ahead and watch the movie, since almost no-one else here actually seems interested in hyping it.

Are you aware that you are in the G.I Joe Anti-Hype thread. :csad:

Same here. When they released that first photo, I was ecstatic. I had full faith in the project. But... then I saw the rest of the cast. That made my hopes drop off a bit, but I tried to shrug it off. Then... I saw the Cobra Commander design and I was pissed. Then... the trailers with the stupid robosuits and the CGI jumping. At that point, my attitude was pretty much "F**k this movie."

What bugs the crap out of me about this movie are details that one would almost think were put in to spite the fans:

1. Baroness is American
2. She only loves Destro because of mind control
3. You have two groups of fans- some think Scarlett should be with Duke, some with Snake-Eyes. So instead they have her with the comic relief guy who is neither.
4. They cast Marlon Wayans as the funny character who isn't that funny anyway.
5. Making the Joes an international team- Ive read some real international fans saying they find this condescending.
6. CC has a background nothing at all like his comic one-especially the fact that he's the Baroness's brother.

I'm not worried about the robo-suits- they're in only one scene, and the military is working on something like that anyway IRL. It's the little details that bug me- of the masked characters in the script, the only one that is not disfigured is Snake-Eyes at the end- Destro and CC wear their masks because both are maimed by the end. Jesus titty-f****** Christ.

Wait, Scarlett is involved with Ripcord and not Snake Eyes or Duke? Seriously?

Good God.

5. Making the Joes an international team- Ive read some real international fans saying they find this condescending.

Uh...why?

Because Gi Joe is an American team...and the producers think so little of foreig audiences that they dont believe that they can get emotionally behind a concept that is American. It is basically calling all foreigners stupid bigots...which is a stupid and bigoted thing to do.

And for the record, I would have been TOTALLY fine if the name GI Joe was never mentioned in the film, so that the movie could be called Action Man where needed.

A real American Hero. It's even part of the theme song. It's not bigoted, racist, or any of that kind of crap. It's just fan's pointing out it should be more of a film like the Lee Marvin/ Chuck Norris 80's action flick Delta Force, than Barry Bostwicks ball less Disco Army Megaforce. But I could see this is a Megaforce remake from day one.

America back then, does not equal what America does now. Hell, when I think G.I. Joe, I always think a group branched in American from various nationalities, determined to save the world.

Who are the non-American members of the team?

That's a pretty sizeable assumption and loaded with hyperbole to boot. Might it be that there's really no damn good reason for the US to have its own super army when it already has an Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, etc?

Actually, it is not an assumption at all. I remember when this movie was first getting off the ground they said theyd turn it into a multi-national group because other countries wouldnt wnat to go see a movie about A Real American Hero, due to being angry abut our real life wars.

And YES, there is a reason why we would assemble the best of the best from all fields int a separate unit, two actually.

1. To have a centralized group to eliminate the red tape and procedures. They have people that can handle any situation without oversight. Heck, we probably have those in real life...assassination squads or what have you.

2. This is a big reason why it should be this way, so pay attention. That is the concept of the toy it's based off of!!!!

No, GI Joe...to its very core...is an AMERICAN hero. So much so that it was called something else in some parts of the world. Taking America out of GI Joe is like taking Eternia out of He-Man...and we see how that worked in his movie!!!! You might as well take transforming out of the Transformers as well. You want a Thundercats movie? Guess what...take away the cats part! Thats what its like to take away the America!

To me, the reason for all of the negative responses to this movie is simple: based on what we've seen, it looks and feels nothing like G.I. Joe.

The backlash I'm seeing towards this movie feels like Transformers everywhere. Casual fans of the cartoons and toy collectors are going to love it, and the hardcore fans of the show and comics are going to hate it. I liked Transformers, so hopefully I'll like this too.

 Exactly

Also Nivek, where did you get that name from only reason I ask is I only know of one well known Nivek and thats from the band Skinny Puppy.

I just saw a TV spot where Baroness sarcastically muttered "real American heroes" at the Joes. Now I'm happy.

A film this scale needs to perform well internationally. US box office isn't enough to make it a success. Given the current political climate, the producers decided to give the Joes a more international feel than just American. This is completely understandable. There's nothing unique, in terms of heroism, about a US soldier vs a German, British, or Israeli soldier. Fighting terrorism isn't just an American occupation, so I'm completely fine with making the team international.

Regarding Snake-Eyes having a mouth. It's canon. His second (visored) costume always had a mouth. Take a look at the figure. He's got a mouth sculpted. That figure is probably his most iconic look and has been around for 24 years. So I think the mouth can stay.

The newest "trailer" which is being shown on tv now (was just on during the Tonight Show) looks a bit better. I still think it's gonna be terrible, but it would be awesome if this turned out to actually be good.

I think it's good that they have made the team more international.

Why would anyone outside of America give a **** about a all American super soldier team? I know I wouldn't. I think the world is pretty sick of all this "YEEEAAA AMERICA RULES!! HOO-RAA!!!" and all that crap, and rightly so.

That's not being racist, I love America. But the whole "YEAA AMERICA RULES!! HOO-RAA!!" not so much. It would be playing up to that whole Team America World Police thing.

Perhaps I should clarify. This is the hyperbole loaded assumption I was referring to:

"It is basically calling all foreigners stupid bigots...which is a stupid and bigoted thing to do."

And when I say "might it be", I'm simply explaining that whatever the political and financial reasons for making GI JOE global, there are valid, rational reasons to do so as well. A lot more than there are reasons for it to remain a purely American team.

I don't believe creating a concept that countries other than America can potentially enjoy that doesn't, as has been pointed out elsewhere, reek of "Yee-haw, America rules!" is anything like the filmmakers calling everyone in other countries stupid and bigoted. It's being sensitive to the idea that hey, America may rock, but it's not the be-all end of military advancement.

To me, the reason for all of the negative responses to this movie is simple: based on what we've seen, it looks and feels nothing like G.I. Joe.

I just can't agree with that. The costumes certainly don't look like they were taken from the original designs (though some of them have similar elements), but we're talking a movie that has the classic codenames and characters, combat methods, massive hidden bases, high tech weapons and vehicles, laser weapons, global conflict, etc. They're not running around in the 80's uniforms for the most part because that's not realistic in the least, and because it's 2009. In the real world, you'd damn well need some body armor, or you'd die in short order. They're still fighting against a Cullen-led M.A.R.S and a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world that will clearly become Cobra, and has many elements of classic Cobra. And there are several key phrases like "Yo Joe", etc. Hell there's even a crack about a "kung fu grip" at some point. Yes, there are changes, but this is very much still GI JOE. It's just GI JOE in a 2009 live action movie, similar to the way that Chris Nolan's Batman is Batman in a modern live action movie, and not something ripped straight from the comic books. It certainly doesn't look and feel exactly like the GI JOE we all know and love, but it's got a lot of familiar and welcome elements to it.

There's nothing unique, in terms of heroism, about a US soldier vs a German, British, or Israeli soldier. Fighting terrorism isn't just an American occupation, so I'm completely fine with making the team international.

Exactly, and very well said.

Frankly, political reasoning aside, I find the idea of a team of global operatives with many countries contributing and backing it to fight terrorism a hell of a lot more compelling than just a US based force, source material notwithstanding. It's like RAINBOX SIX on crack, and a lot less like a SHIELD ripoff.

Rainbow Six on crack, now THAT would be a sight to see.

But yes in all seriousness, I think it is good they are making the team more global. Not just so it doesn't alienate people who are not American, but because I think the whole idea of getting different operatives from different parts of the world together to form a crack commando unit is just so much better than a bunch of American soldiers. Or a bunch of British, Australian whatever. The principle is the same no matter what nationality.

I would love to see a RAINBOX SIX movie.

And it's not like America's influence isn't felt. The very term "G.I Joe" refers to an American soldier.

Yea, I'm sure it will still be American enough for the hard core fans.

And yea, why the **** hasn't a Rainbow Six movie been made yet? Out of all the Clancy properties, I would of thought that would be right at the top of the pile. Love that book and the games.
