Another childhood favorite gets the big screen, big budget, live action, treatment in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra offers plenty of action and eye candy, but if you're looking for Shakespeare mixed with bullets and explosions ,you will be very dissapointed.
Director Stephen Sommers and writers Stuart Beattie and David Elliot make some major changes to the JOE legend. If your fond of the animated show and comic like me,this may be a bit of a let down. Some changes work, some dont, but some of the JOE legend is left intact.
The acting in the film is so bad,i was embarrassed for the actors on screen.I havent seen acting this bad since Catwoman.
Sienna Miller does a pretty good job as the Baroness,Rachel Nichols as Shana 'Scarlett' O'Hara,is great in her action sequences, and both ladies look great in their form fitting outfits.Ray Park once again shows off his fancy footwork and swordplay as the silent Snake Eyes, especially when facing off with Byung-hun Lee who portrays Storm Shadow.Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, wasnt as annoying as i thought he would be.
Most of the other characters are just lack luster, and they are bogged down by bad acting.I was dissapointed with Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, absolutely nothing that is fun, and interesting about the character is brought out in the film.Making Channing Tatum as Duke lovesick, was just uhmmmm...sick!!!
Director Stephen Sommers tries his best though to cover up the bad spots with tons of action, gadgets and visuals, though some of the CGI is a bit off.
So lower your expectations a bit,and enjoy the action, and get ready for the sequels, because the film definitely lets you know there will be one about four times,at the end of the film
Scale of 1-10 a 7 1/2

I'll wait for the DVDrip.

Yeah, wait. Nothing special or that "You gotta see it for this scene" here. Especially if you give a damn about anything G.I. Joe.

Hey, if all you know is watching the cartoon 20 years ago, then it won't seem that bad. If you actually care about... well anything, you will be disappointed.

Personally, Transformers 2 was a bit better enjoyment wise (I gave it 1 7/10, G.I. Joke about 5/10), but it's the same kind of mess. I don't understand how something that costs like 3 times the budget of something like District 9, can look cheaper.

And to the people thinking fans like myself were too anal, eat it. Then tell me, what did you think the differences between this and JCVD's Street Fighter really are. Too me, they are not that far off. Both are "fun" if you are wasted and have minimal expectations.

Nivek , I was giving your opinions some weight until I came to the part were John Cena should have played Duke. Really? John Cena? I find it funny how peoples memories of things can be so different from reality. I recently watched the G.I. Joe season 1.1 dvd and it would be impossible for the movie to be more campy than the cartoon. I didn't read the comics in the past so I can't compare the movie to the older comics. I can say that IDW's recent comic books have been very good are written to be taken seriously, so I would recommend those to people who felt the movie was to corny.

same here...been rewatching the animated series through Netflix, just finished Disc 1 (The MASS Device)...and wanting to replace a mediocre actor (Channing Tatum) with a plain ol' ****** actor (John Cena) doesn't make a lot of sense

Seriously, Tatum was as bad as Cena in The Marine. Hell, they could play twins, one on 'roids, the other just pouty. Is Tatum an athlete turned actor, or is he a full time actor?

Like I've said before jeb, if all you know of G.I. Joe is that 80's cartoon and action figures, you won't have high expectations and you will enjoy what you got. If your someone like me who's first impressions were based off of reading the comic book, you will think new viewers got really shortchanged. But hell, most old school comic fans like me realized months ago what we were going to get.

I was a fan of the animated series and wasn't even aware there was a comic until after it had been canceled...I tend to be hearing from a lot of fans of the comic that "the comic is the only source material that matters" and that, IMO, is silly

Nivek, have you been reading any of the current IDW comics. If so what is your opinion of them? I've really been enjoying them. Are the previous comics similar to the recent ones?

If you read the early Marvel comic, I doubt you would say that. It was so much better than the kid based show, and many other comics at the time.

But hey, I also have to understand a lot of people here grew up long after G.I. Joe passed it's peak, and don't know any better.

I have never read the IDW series, I've heard good things about it.

As far as the comic, I think IDW issued some reprints of the key issues, like the Snake-Eyes issues.

Amazon G.I. Joe reprint Volume #3

for one, you could stop with the passive/aggressive cheap shots...I'm 30 and grew up during the 80's animated series and all the other iterations and where I lived, the comic was a very niche thing....myself and 3 other people I know have seen this movie...my 23 yr old cousin, my 15 yr old cousin, and my 20 yo sister...the only person that was meh about it was the 23 yo....everyone else, including me, enjoyed it....for my part, the worst intrepretation of 'GI Joe' was Valor vs. Venom....it was a dtv that Hasbro put out where General Hawk got turned into a half snake half bull thing and GI Joe saved him with paintball guns

I saw it out of loyalty having grown up on G.I. Joe but went in with pretty much no pre-conceived notions having not followed development much and only having seen the trailers and wow, it was just...terrible.

Only thing I'm aggressive about is anyone putting down something that is seen by many fans of being the best interpretation of the concept. Just seems silly to knock any comics on a place called Superhero Hype and not get some pepper in response. Especially in weight of this mediocre film.

Im not knocking on the comics, I just wasn't aware of them and most of the people I knew were mostly into the cartoons...what I don't like is fans running down people who actually liked the movie...there is a vast well of source material that is 'GI Joe' and to hold the film against just one facet of that (the comics) as the standard seems a bit narrow....if you think the movie sucks on its own merit, then so be it...I enjoyed it and I don't think that makes me any less of a GI Joe fan....I enjoyed it a bit more than Transformers

Same here. When GI Joe was around I rarely bought comics, because as soon as I had any money I'd always spend it on action figures. The GI Joe comics are certainly better as stories than the cartoon series was, but to say that the cartoons should be completely ignored, when for the majority of kids that was the GI Joe we knew, is a disservice IMO. It was goofy action fun, and I think they did a good job of carrying over some of that to the movie without turning it into a super campy Batman and Robin-style mess.

For Nivek - The IDW run aka Devil's Due acknowledges the Marvel GI Joe run. So, if you picked up the IDW run you won't need any backstory.

Its cool.

I cannot believe how truly goddamn stupid this movie was. I just got back, and I'm litterally at a loss. I'm actually embarrassed that it was my idea for my friends and I to go. This was like watching van helsing all over again.

It is beyond me how anyone gave this movie a pass while trashing transformers. Michael
bay would have blown this movie away had he directed.

They could've made it just like the cartoon and comics, word for word, shot by shot, everything perfect, and you guys would STILL find something to complain about.

"WAAAAAH!!! His hair isn't the right type of blonde! GAAAHHH!!!! Snake Eyes isn't tall enough!"

You people are NEVER satisfied with ANYTHING. I don't see why people can't just frickin chill out and enjoy the goddamn movie. That's what I'm gonna do on monday. Go to the theater, buy my popcorn and drinks, and sit back and watch a great fun action movie. A live-action G.I. JOE movie. I don't see why you all can't do the same.
There we go.

I hate how people lump everyone in one category if they seem to dislike something.

You people.

I seem to recall myself posting why I disliked it and I seem to recall myself saying it was due to acting and the story itself. Down the line I made mention of nerd/geek facts being wrong. But they did not initially make my opinion on the movie sour.

Its the acting being freaking bland as hell and the story trying to be serious/not serious at the same time, thereby negating the "go in with your brain turned off". If your going to go and explain something for 10 minutes, then 5 minutes later forget about it. Don't explain it then. It was a waste of time and the audiences intelligence.

I'll say this like how you all have been saying this.

If YOU people wanted a brainless action film, you got it. It did its job. Then don't complain about TF2, cause GI Joe and TF2 were the same.

I just found most of the characters and the action in GI Joe much more entertaining than watching big ass robots trying to kill the sun. :o

PORK CHOP SANDWICHES!!!

The movie was better then I figured it would be.
They did a decent job of telling the story through the flashbacks. I thought the transition of flashbacks were really done well.
Especially the stormshadow flashback right after the "I guess we are all sorry for something" line.
The comedy played better then I expected as well. Wayans delivered some decent comedy relief.
Action was great. They def brought it to a higher level then I thought they would.
Watching snake eyes and storm shadow tear through the scenes was awesome.

However,
They did a bad job of real time character development. If it were not for the flashbacks, the characters would be so bloody 2 dimensional and stale.
Snake eyes needed something through his actions to show character, but they gave him nothing. A simple turn of the head showing thought would suffice. But they gave him next to nothing.

I was hoping for more cameos if you will with all the different characters. Now, they didnt need to make them look like the village people, but they could have had small things to distinguish each character.

I did not like the ending. It felt kind of rushed and sloppy. Commander and Destro escaping would have made more sense. Locking them up in large cylinders was lame. Dukes line "I'll be waiting"...seriously? [SARCASM]That has never been done before [/SARCASM]

I just saw...G.I. Joe Rise Of Cobra, a 2nd time, and it is awesome! G.I. Joe Rise Of Cobra is clearly, the best film of 2009. YO JOE!
