I dont know why Sommers gets so much hate. He isnt like Bay at all. He's not a dick, he doesnt get mad at fans (not that Bay's anger isnt justifyed)....and he isnt a bad director.

Sommers did refer to the fan base as "rabid" in an interview (which is true) and he got a lot of undeserved heat for that...I found Deep Rising in my grocery store for like 4 dollars in the bargain bin

Im still not getting why so many disliked Quaids voice/acting, his voice and mannerisms reminded me in a way of John Wayne which was how General Hawk was in the toons, again this was a movie based off a toy/comic line so the acting par didnt need to be gouped in the same with other SERIOUS or true war movies.

I've come to the conclusion that I can only accept the Joe movie as an alternate Joe universe just like Marvel and DC comics have multiple universes why not G.I.Joe right?

Cool now we can all be happy now and here's a myriad of different Joe continuities I can think of:

-the Marvel comic series
-the Marvel/Sunbow animated series
-the DIC animated series
-Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles pilot episode
-G.I.Joe Extreme animated series
-G.I.Joe Valor vs. Venom
-G.I.Joe Sigma 6
-G.I.Joe comics from Image, IDW, DDP

in addition
GI Joe : Spy Troopers (a DTV from Hasbro, but in the same line as Valor vs. Venom)
GI Joe : Resolute (for the grown up fans)

Alright, I guess I will post up my thoughts. I had low expectations and it didnt disappoint. I figured it would be a 5 out of 10 and thats about right.

Some decent action and it was interesting to see the characters on the screen.

HOWEVER, I had a lot of eye rolling and WTF moments.
Such as
1) The Cobra soldiers get injected with the nanomites so they feel no pain and have no fear. But when Snake Eyes is stabbing them with his sword, they scream like little girls...WTF
2) Baroness carried around what I would describe as a pulse gun-it could take out what she was aiming at and anything nearby. Yet she would often shoot her standard pistol or automatic weapon dry before pulling out this superior piece of weaponry...WTF

sooo many more, I have forgotten some of them.

The accelerator suits just made me think "Iron Man ripoff"

The love story between Duke and Baroness was a bit ridiculous.

Dennis Quaid proved once again why he isnt Harrison Ford. General Hawk just plain sucked...he came off like the cartoon version.

The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow backstory was one of the best storylines I have ever read in a comic, seriously. But instead of really use that to bring some meat to this cheese story OR save that little arc for a sequel, they revealed just enough to make you not really care to see it all.

Saw it a couple of days, and honestly, I loved it. It wasn't the self-indulgent dumbass fest that was Bay's TF2. This movie knew what it was, and that was a fast-paced, no-brainer action movie. It was highly entertaining with a simple story, that didn't feel it had to overreach by turning the GI Joe brand into something it isn't. The action sequences were epic and pure fun, especially MARS' attack at the Pit. My only complaints mainly come from the actors. Now I'm not saying I expected anything impressive from the acting, but Channing Tatum was not even trying. His "try-to-sound-ghetto" attitude took it's toll on me and almost made me root for the Doctor when he was trying to kill him. He eventually grew on my, but I never got the sense that this guy could lead such a tough and awesome team such as the Joes. Marlon Wayans surprised me and I got quite a fews laughs from him in this movie. Baroness was hot and quite convincing as the mega-*****, but the way her character was treated, especially near the end, was completely unnecessary and unbeliveble. The hints of the sequel near the end gave me chills, and I persoanlly can't wait to see another, esecially if I get to see Snake Eyes kick more ass next time around. Solid 8/10.

Was there a romance thing between The Baroness and Storm Shadow because that's why Stormy killed The Baron dude because he "touched" her.

I'm assuming all the times the Baron and Baroness would get romantic and Stormy would watch them get their "freak on" and get jealous.

Eppy, I actually agree with your review. It was exacly like playing with toys. It really brought me back to when I was little...er...even though I never had Joes... I did create long story lines, with ships, bases, and final battles.

I dont know why Sommers gets so much hate. He isnt like Bay at all. He's not a dick, he doesnt get mad at fans (not that Bay's anger isnt justifyed)....and he isnt a bad director.

But he's not a good one, aside from The Mummy, and Deep Rising, he really cant get a good proformance out of an actor.

Thanks. It's always nice to please one's toughest critic. :oldrazz:

I agree that Bay's the better director, but Sommers understood exactly how to make a Hasbro toy film. G.I. Joe maintains a very precise tone for its entire running-time, and characters which complement and enhance it. Compare that to the tone of TF2 which, tonally, was all over the board, and treated its robot stars like soulless props.

It was very obvious that Somers had the idea 5 minutes after he saw Iron Man.
The love story between Duke and Baroness was a bit ridiculous.
More than a bit, in fact it was completely riduculous and superfluous.

Yeah...we tended to really loath each other over on the TF2 boards. :o

But still, I agree. While the movie is flawed, it was fun. Dumb...but fun.

While I still thought TF was more entertaining, there was this very easy feeling with GI JOE. It felt good for everyone. And everyone can see it.

I finally saw the movie today. I was surprised that it didn't suck. While I wouldn't neccessarily call it a better film than "Revenge of the Fallen", I would say it had a much better pace. Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Scarlett, Heavy Duty (go, Mr. Eko!) and even Cobra Commander made the movie for me. Joseph Gordon-Levitt really did a good job. Sienna Miller was okay as Baroness. Hell, I even tolerated Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. Channing Tatum, however, sucked as Duke. I can't stand him.

The other thing that distracted me was the piss-poor CGI. God, it was awful.

I am interested in a sequel so we can see more of Joseph Gordon Levitt's Cobra Commander in action.

Other than that, I have no major complaints. I'd give it a 7/10.

Well, we have a new record holder. This movie, without a doubt, is the new champion! It is THE greatest combination of loud noise and cheese ever put forth on to the silver screen. I was expecting a dumb and crazy CGfest but I thought that maybe they could provide mindless popcorn fun like Transformers somehow managed to deliver. I was wrong. Unlike Transformers 2, spectacle did NOT win out over the shear stupidity. The plot is as bad as you would expect but the action set pieces are too loud and ridiculous to enjoy. I was snickering often at the absurdity. This could be the quintessential roll your eyes movie. Whether it was the preposterous flashbacks (kung fu kids? bunker bad guy lives?) or the insane disregard for human life (how many people died in Paris?) this movie was so bad that it may be rewatchable simply to mock it.

3/10

If they do a sequel, I hope JGL uses his Doctor voice instead of the new one. That one at least grew on me. And yeah, get rid of Duke and bring in Flint. They can say he's with the Baroness trying to help her rehabilitate.

I honestly enjoyed this movie way more than I thought I would...Yo Joe!! Excited about the sequel and where Sommers plans to take some of the characters, but lessen the chesse factor some and watch out for the CGI fest!!! 7.5/10

I think they'll get more into the Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes origin in the sequel. Sommers almost confirmed that in an interview. He said there is still a LOT of stuff left to be explained and explored. Including that Storm Shadow didn't really kill the Hard Master. So I'm looking forward to that.

and Baroness being involved with Destro while having crushes on other Joes (from the animated series) makes more sense??

I thought that's what people wanted (things to be lifted 'as is' from the source material)

...and a good number of fans DID NOT read the comic book, I wasn't even aware that there was one until after it had been cancelled in the 90's

What should he have done? He was in a cartoon movie.

No, he was in a live action movie, but acted cartoonish.

retired after Innerspace.

Agreed.

Im not saying that Duke and Baroness' love affair was unbelievable or anything. But it was very cheesy and weird to me. Its obvious she is a bit of a ****e and uses her sexuality to her advantage.
It amazes me about the comic book thing. My nephew has no idea that Spiderman is/was a comic book. Seriously.
However, those without the comic experience can probably enjoy the movies more (this applies to all comic related movies).

well the comics have 1 backstory

the animated series presented a vague outline of that

GI Joe Resolute (the animated web shorts) presented another variation

and the film with yet another version

its a bit of a mess

No argument there either. Of course I am only somewhat knowledgable about the comics and animated series.

I miss these boards, but sadly I'm working now. I would like to say this movie was soooooooooooo much fun, wow better than I expected based on sommers' track record.
He does better work away from universal.

what I liked in a nutshell;
The idea to use the new recruit structure applied to the introduction of the gi joe oginazation. A good way to keep the audience engaged and in wonder.

-I love Brandon Fraser.
-Cobra's scarred past.
-Some of the set pieces.
-Snake eyes being that special scene stealing bad ass(he could do everything they could, and without the special suits)
-Snake eyes past.
-Every joe getting his moment(like the show)

What I didn't like so much.

Channing being a naturalistic actor is good is most of his urban set movies but here, for all Dukes charm he was out of place.

Not sure why they had to attack the eiffel tower if the bugs would eat the entire city:huh:
nothing else is worth really mentioning.

I would like to address this however

...I was snickering often at the absurdity. This could be the quintessential roll your eyes movie. about half as many that died during the real terrorist attack on New York City a few years ago. Sometimes the heroes can't save everyone and people actually die. Especially when they are trying to stop the "Bad guys" form destroying everyone in the city(including they ones that got hit by the stray missiles)

as a young boy I would have really loved seeing that kid snake eyes story line.

lastly I will say this, sommers and bay should trade, they obviously want to.
That paris scene needed it some bay.

Sure bay likes cars but he likes making cool military show pieces moreso.

Sure sommers likes cool army heroes but he likes making (mediterranean) culturally mythic other worldly cgi driven adventures as moreso.

peace

oh yea, I wonder when ppl will start mentioning how a black character that (can't) "doesn't read manuals" and trips over his feet, has wonky caricaturic features and makes dumb jokes is offensive to the black community...

I 100% agree with you.

I am fully versed in the comics. I almost completely stopped looking at the cartoon after reading the 1st issue (Which is framed and hung up on my wall and yes I have every issue of the original series) and after seeing this movie I was doubly dissapointed in it. They threw away so much decent storyline for an effects laden plotless mess ala' TF2. Look at this picture

. This was the proposed suit from Tim Burton had he directed Superman as he was supposed to. Supes pulls blades off his suit to fight with. McG had Lois as portrayed by Beyonce. Not quite what you bargained for is it. How many comic book fans would have hung on to this and said " Oh,think of it as an alternate universe version?" or " You Fanboys should shut up it's just a movie!". Change for Hollywoods sake / vision / rendition is ridiculous sometimes.

lets be realistic here, change for Hollywood's sake is generally always a disaster
