I think we've got to be realistic, if the Greyjoys were to be involved this season then they would have announced their casting with the other main characters. And given that they're willing to removed Arianne, arguably the most important Dornish POV...it doesn't look good.

Manderlys will betray the Freys during the battle in all likelihood.

Yes, though there is the presumable snag of Stannis not knowing that Davos is in the process of securing Lord Manderly's alliance.

And if there was any antagonist from books 4 and 5 who could make as great an impression on the Unsullied as Tywin Lannister, it would be Euron Greyjoy. So I'm prepared for either a lack of Greyjoys, or some version of the Eurio theory.

Has anyone brought up GRRM not writing an episode this season yet?

Yes, it's for the better. Though does cement the idea that season 5 will be deviating further from the books.

On the flip side of that...Thomas Harris should write an episode of Hannibal. Lazy bastard hasn't gotten anything better to do...

Yeah Martin explained that he would not be writing an episode or taking on any more extra work or new trips so that he could focus on getting WOW done.

In a new interview with Vulture, Martin says that he will be taking Season 5 off “because I have this book to finish.”
He’ll also be clearing out his schedule, and won’t be making a trip to the set of Game of Thrones until next year. “I might make it over there early next year, but I’ve got to finish the book The Winds of Winter. So I’m making the trips I’m already obligated to make, but I’m not adding any new trips at this time. So I don’t think I’m going to do a set visit this year, sadly.”

Based on some of the "filler" and "tv only" moments of the last season, I'm getting the feeling that deviations will start happening far more often.

As a big anime watcher here I can tell you that I see the signs of an "anime only" ending happening here. I know GRRM has told HBO all the main points he plans on going over but officially it won't follow the canon and it's possible that when he gets to writing the final books that he decides to go down a different path.

I love when adaptations are mostly faithful but in this case I won't be too peeved as long as it makes sense with the overall direction. It will be like a Fullmetal Alchemist situation for me (the original anime/adaptation of the manga/comic book was awesome even though it seriously deviated from the manga).

Anyway the signs are definitely there that they're going down the filler and tv-only route due to the lack of material from the source.

But, going back to what Craig said about the "anime ending" of the series, he's likely right (YOU'RE LIKELY RIGHT CRAIG!) though I don't think it's lack of material that's caused them to go their own path, but rather the fact that they have too much and don't want to go beyond 7 seasons.

If you look at the new factions/storylines introduced in books 4 and 5, they've all been set up from the magical side of things, via visions, dreams prophecies etc all the way back to A Clash of Kings, which the show completely ignored from the start aside from Bran's stuff and a weirdly invented version of the Undying sequence. So yeah, seems like they just decided to say the hell with it for timing reasons. I suppose the reason it's so jarring for some is that up until now the show has been very faithful to the material, and now after crossing the halfway point they're radically altering stuff.

We'll see how things go, but at the very least we'll have lots of needless Martell nudity and Eunuch love stories next year to look forward to!

I recall a spot of nudity during one of the ironborn chapters in A Feast for Crows, in a castle that Euron had taken.

I'm highly considering giving up the show to wait on the books. Not because I don't enjoy the show but I really don't want the broader strokes of ASoIaF spoiled for me because the show has to rush.

It's gonna be so interesting to see how Season 5 is truly going to be.

Personally, since D&D know Martin's ending, I think we'll see the same as he has planned only we'll get there in a different way.

No, they just haven't been announced yet which people are assuming means they've been cut. It's still TBD.

I'm pretty sure its safe to say they've been cut. Which angers me greatly. Makes me not even really care about the show anymore. Seems like the double Ds are looking to combine characters and shorten the time-frame of the series before the book series ends. I mean, Victarion would've been a huge fan favorite. I think any story line we get with the Ironborn will be combined into "Yara."

Alternate universe though, so who cares? Someone will come along in the next 15 years and remake this thing. You'd think HBO would wanna lengthen this thing, since its their biggest hit.

I'm fine with Vic and Aeron getting cut. The show does have a bit of comedy to it, so you'd think Victarion would fit right in. If there was any character that could step into Tywin's role as a charismatic antagonist, it was Euron Greyjoy. What if [blackout](f)Aegon isn't Young Griff in TV Continuity, but Trystane?[/blackout]

As long as I get to see Asha... uh... Yara... make her speech at her Queensmoot, I'll be happy. To be honest the Greyjoys outside Asha and Theon don't interest me in the least. Though if they are cut it really makes me wonder if that dragon horn is going to be that big a deal come tWoW.

I'm much the same. Asha/Yara is one of my favourite characters in particular, and her Queensmoot speech is damn good. She was so close to winning.

I'm also a bit sad that we'll probably miss Victarion being so obliviously stupid. His POV chapters are so entertaining because of how thick as a post he is.

I doubt it will be remade least not by anyone other than HBO. HBO bought the tv rights to the novels and I've read that they have first look at anything set in Westeros and Essos. And I wouldn't expect them to remake their own series for a very long time if ever. The only way you are getting another take on the series is if someone finds a way to make a film series out of the books, but Martin would need to approve of the pitch and sell the film rights.

As for why HBO aren't going beyond 7 seasons. D&D want 7 seasons, and HBO respects their decision.

A film adaption of the series isn't likely to happen. George has talked about how he's had to turn away truckloads of cash because the treatments he saw weren't up to par. It would be impossible to do as great an adaption as what's being done on television (despite some small changes here and there). A good movie, yes, but probably a lackluster adaption.

HBO wants a quality show as well, reducing quality to stretch things out (which i think would be inevitable, best content is in the past imo) and they don't want that. 7 seasons is pretty long for an HBO show anyway.

George R.R. Martin says fans have guessed his secret ending
By James Hibberd on Aug 12, 2014 at 2:42PM

From the Game of Thrones showrunners, we already know that George R.R. Martin’s top-secret planned ending to his book saga is “absolutely” satisfying. But now we’ve learned that a few fans already know what the ending is as well. They just don’t know that they know. You know?

Here’s what happened: Martin was speaking at the Edinburgh International Literary Festival where he was reportedly asked about fan theories regarding the rest of his saga—which will likely consist of two more novels, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, neither of which have release dates yet. Martin knows which major characters will live and die in the next two books, he said, while the fates of minor characters remain undecided.

“I’ve wrestled with [the issue of fan speculation online], because I do want to surprise my readers,” he said, according to The Telegraph. “I hate predictable fiction as a reader, I don’t want to write predictable fiction. I want to surprise and delight my reader and take them in directions they didn’t see coming … At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I’d planted in the books and came to the right solution. So what do I do then? Do I change it? I wrestled with that issue, and I came to the conclusion that changing it would be a disaster, because the clues were there. You can’t do that, so I’m just going to go ahead. Some of my readers who don’t read the boards, which thankfully there are hundreds of thousands of them, will still be surprised and other readers will say: ‘see, I said that four years ago, I’m smarter than you guys.'”

Martin plans to devote a bit more time to finishing Winds of Winter this next year as he’s not writing an episode of HBO’s Thrones in season 5.
Gotta be talking about [blackout]R+L=J[/blackout], right? And just downplaying how many people have latched onto that theory... which, at this point, has to be damn near every reader/viewer to step into a forum discussing ASOIAF/GOT. :o
