But what right did he have to promote Edd? Then again, the Night's Watch only has about 30 active members left probably by now.

The same right Mormont had when he left Thorne as acting commander before he ventured North. They can vote on a permanent candidate later after they confer with Eastwatch and the Shadow Tower on their situation.

My understanding of it is that the commander can elect an interim commander until the elected commander returns or the Watch holds a vote to elect a new commander.

But Jon didnt necessarily make Edd the new commander. He told Edd to wear the cloak, burn it, or do whatever. Jon is leaving it up to Edd and the Watch because he is done with it, and doesnt care about the Watch's politics anymore.

But if he was the commander, his watch wouldn't have ended. ;)

"The Castle is yours" implies that though.

There are no established rules in this matter. No living person has ever fulfilled their vows while alive because they are unto death. This seems to be the first time it has happened. So they are having to deal with this one issue at a time. As the vows are, Jon has fulfilled them in their entirety.

As for the position of commander, that is a position granted by the will of the men of the Watch. Jon was elected prior to his death so he died the Commander. After his resurrection, the men still considered him their commander so as far as they were concerned he was still their commander. He abdicated the position when he declared his Watch had ended. ;)

So the title of the episode Oathbreaker, refers to Jon breaking his oath?

Because if he is still the Lord Commander after his resurrection, that means his Watch didn't end, or do Undead people get this "get out of jail" card that i'm unaware of?

Edd would be an interim until the men either officially elect him or elect someone else. That is if the men decide to bother with that. And whether the men recogbize Jon's decision to leave Edd in charge.

I suppose they could ignore it if they wanted to.

That's pretty much what I said above to Drz about interim commanders.

In the last vote, one candidate came from the Shadow Tower so if they're serious about continuing they'll dispatch ravens to the other forts.

But maybe they'll disband, some will join Jon, others more dedicated to their oath will split to the other two forts or try to hold CB with a skeleton crew and wait to be reinforced.

He was still Lord Commander because the men still considered him their Lord Commander. They could have chose to not consider him their commander anymore. They didnt. I got the impression Jon didnt really give a **** one way or the other. Its not like he was bossing anyone around.

And when Jon leaves the men can vote immediately for a new commander if they want to regardless of what Jon said to Edd. So Jon being commander or not is entirely irelevent. The men left at the Wall are calling the shots and they considered him commander, they were fine with executing the traitors, and they will decide how to proceed now that Jon has has unequivocally declared his Watch ended.

His vows were fulfilled because the vows are unto death and he has died.

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.”

Night’s Watch oath

He died so his vows were fulfilled. It cant be spelled out anymore clearly than this.

This is a dumb conversation that's being had just for the sake of arguing lol

If it isn't obvious how, why, etc etc Jon is allowed to leave... try an easier show to follow.

No one there gives two ****s what Jon does after what happened. Edd especially. He straight up told them all his watch was over. which it is. He died. He came back and since they had not yet chosen a new LC in that 1 day... He comes back as the LC and chooses to **** off and give it to someone else. Why? Because he ****ing can and no one is going to stop him.

anyone else disappointed Ollie and Jon had no dialogue?

I was hoping he'd at least say "you little **** ****!"

/waits for supermanfanboy to be more tired of my bs

I wanted Jon to say something, but alas i guess it made sense.

i think Rickon tripled in size since we last saw him lol he's as tall as Ramsay

Olly pushed his luck. Killing Ygritte was fair. She took out his old man. Jon let that slide. But treason? Gurl please. :o

I did like how there was kind of an echo between Thorne's last words to Jon about how he'd have to keep fighting battles after Thorne was dead and Dayne's own similar comments to Ned. Both were changed a bit by context, but there was genuine respect in both.

yea both of them thought they were in the right. It makes Thorne look better as a character.

She was the old hotness. Mel was dat new hotness. Dat 200ish year old new hotness.

But, all in all, you can bet Kal-El's heart great three times its size the day he saw Jon cut the line...

I know who Kal-el is... i thought you were referring to a user here or something lol

Acting like I don't know Kal-el is supermans real name... christ Victarion!

Jon and Arya is the big one. No doubt. Then Jon and Bran and Arya and Sansa. But the oddity has always been Jon and Sansa. Which is why I want to see it so.

Yes, it will be joyous. Because damnit, the original title for the final book was A Time for Wolves. It will be glorious!!!!

Hope Sansa legitimizes Jon. And he becomes Jon Stark. Jon would recognize her as queen in the north since everyone else is MIA. Don't think he would turn it down with an actual stark offering it. Right now Sansa is just looking for safety but Jon and Davos will get her to take on the leadership role and taking back the north.

Yes, yes. He died, but he came back and continued to act as the Lord Commander and ordered 4 people to have murdered and then stopped being the Lord Commander.

I hope the Weirwood trees follow the same logic as you do, not that oath breakers have any worries in this universe compared to the books.

Because your logic just doesn't add up. Either he was an unauthorized Lord Commander who did what he wanted, or he continued his watch post-murder until he decided to break his oath.

Hope Sansa legitimizes Jon. And he becomes Jon Stark. Jon would recognize her as queen in the north since everyone else is MIA.

Jon Snow in the tv show knows that Bran is alive and would surely want something to be done for Bran.

They are working for Qyburn now. They used to be Varys' little birds (spies). Qyburn is earning their trusts to work for him, and he is now working for Cersei.
