Game of Thrones General (Non-Book Related) Discussion Thread - Part 1

I actually was really happy last night with the overall story of this season as it played out. The problem for me is, I felt like I just got the recap all season, and there's a whole other half a season of character moments that weren't shown. The best example I can give is Missandei's captivity. In any other 14 episode season, there would have been multiple scenes across multiple episodes of her as a captive, likely sitting in her cell or maybe in Cersei's chamber or somewhere, having verbal sparring matches with her. Instead, we never saw her captured, and cut right to her execution. There was a lot of good plot to be had within the story we got over the last six episodes.

Peter Dinklage is the show's MVP, and especially last night's. He brought tears to my eyes in the scene with Jaimie and Cersei and then again in the dragon pit. Also going to give a very large shout out to Sophie Turner. While wardrobe and makeup helped for sure, but she absolutely nailed Sansa's evolution into Lady of Winterfell. She has been the spitting image of Catelyn Stark the last few seasons, and I attribute a lot of that to Sophie's acting choices.

I doubt they know that term in Westeros.
It's not nonsense. Tyrion was trialed and sentenced. Only Jaime and Cersei knew the truth. Outside Olenna, Littlefinger and Sansa.
But they have Bran now to confirm the truth so it is written down accurately. That was the whole point behind electing Bran as the king. But, I just think it goes to show there will be very little peace. Brienne is already making assumptions like she did between Renely and Stannis. Also, I can't imagine once Daario finds out about Daenerys, he won't gather his forces and attack Westeros.

Ahh man the most shocking not shocking death they might as well put sub titles "jon kills dany in this scene" and how doesn't grey worm or the doth raki not kill jon no they arrest him lololol

and don't back track on the super rushed "mad queen" angle let her murder Tyrion right there for freeing Jaime no she arrest him also then she is mad chill in the thrown room smiling and happy so that's why you have Jon kill her for real Gfy

so a character that was missing for a whole season cause of his uselessness {Bran} gets to be king truly did nothing in all the battles and why is he asking for a master of whisperers YOUR THAT GUY MAN

WAS THAT SNOW THAT COVERED DROGON please tell me in wasn't

and so there is a lose Dragon with no allegiance to anyone YEAH LETS LEAVE THAT HANGING OUT THERE

JON IS KING how the F does grey worm decide his faith and BRAN and Sansa your rulers now surely your not going to let the guy that did most of the work get exiled in disgrace SURE WE ARE

why is there a nights watch anyway no more wildings to fight or walkers are they hunting more dire wolfs to kill?

only good thing in that episode was the shot of Dany walking and drogon wings form as if they were coming out of her THATS IT

.

And what was up with Drogon, by the way? Why didn't he kill Jon, why melt the throne, why carry off Dany's body? None of the dragon's ever displayed that level of intelligence or emotion before.
.
I don't think I agree with this. When Dany was pretending to leave her dragon with the Unsullied Master, the dragon was clearly emotional and distraught. It's also been shown throughout the show that dragons are intelligent, and that Drogon in particular has a telepathic bond with Daenerys, which is why he showed up when she absolutely needed him the most in the fighting pits. They also knew Tyrion coming down was there to help them, so it's why they didn't eat him or burn him. It's also been implied that the dragons can sense the Targaryen blood in Jon, so maybe there is something hardwired in them to not kill a Targaryen. But if Drogon had a telepathic bond to Dany, I can accept he would see images of the chair she was so obsessed with and was her ultimate undoing. Maybe he also thought humans are foolish to be fighting and slaughtering themselves over such a materialistic thing. I have my problems with Benioff and Weiss, but the way the dragons were portrayed were not one of them. Only thing I might find critical would be how Drogon never gets tired of burning down the city. You would think there would be a point where he runs out of gas and can't do no more till he has energized.

@Broseph44 the last one is a good one because right away i thought the scene was weird.
The rubble was strangely convenient placed and it didnt really look like a sure death place like it was the episode before.
There seemed to be so much room where they could have escaped to in order to safe their lifes.
Jaime and Cersei`s death looked like a impossible to avoid thing, but here it looked like a few steps into a different direction when the stuff fell would have saved them.
Really weird.

But peter made it work despite it all...they all did.
Even the less "gifted" actors like sophie and emilia did the best they could with subpar material.
They all did...except D&D(i dont even fully blame the writers completely)

Yeah, just letting Drogon roam free is what really kills me. I know that there’s nothing they could probably do to put him down but the way they just gloss over it at the end is ridiculous.

“A Targaryen alone in the world is a dangerous thing indeed. BUT HAY YOU GUYZ A DRAGON ROAMING FREE WHO IS OKAY WITH NUKING CITIES AND HAS JUST LOST ALL OF ITS LOVED ONES AINT ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT CUZ REASONS.”

Bran: I can see the past, the future, I know everything. I only came here because I knew you would crown me king.

Also Bran: Hey guys, has anyone seen Drogon? Where is he?

Yeah, I thought that was weird too.

I have loved this show since the very first episode when it first aired, I have defended it for its shortcomings, have spent countless hours thinking and talking about it, but this finale and season have left me bitter. The way I felt after this season is the exact anti-thesis of how I felt after Endgame: cheated, unsatisfied, unfulfilled, and with tremendous resent. This season changed the way I feel about the series as a whole, and I can't tell you disappointing that feels.

I regret ever advertising it to my friends and family I was always happy to answer any question they might have had now I'm ignoring all there inquiries

After sleeping on it, I still find King Bran an odd, sort of deus ex machina-ish resolution, but I think Jon's ending was basically perfect. I don't think his lineage reveal was pointless. It was a burden for him, it drove a wedge between him and Dany and played a role in "the snap". It adds a nice layer of irony to the story that the true rightful heir to the throne was born with a bastard's name and will live out the rest of his days North of the wall. He saved the world very few people in Westeros will ever know it. I dunno, I think it strikes the right chord. I don't think glory ever suited him much.

To be honest, I think the reason they chose to have Drogon fly away with Dany was to leave room for speculation and a revival in any potential continuation. I do think GOT will eventually get a sequel of some sort, probably decades from now, and I wouldn't count out the possibility of a Dany resurrection in it, especially given the rules of this world.

Ah, yeah Dany coming back as a fire queen or something of the sort. I could see it happening. Especially if Emilia Clarke's and Kit Harington's careers don't really go anywhere over the next few years, lol.

I think Drogon surviving is probably a GRRM thing. It’s a thing in the books that there have been historical instances of dragons flying off into the unknown, so I suspect we’re meant to assume he returns to Valyria or the Dothraki Sea or perhaps beyond the known world to live out his life.

or maybe take care of his litter of little dragons? read some of the spoilers that were out there this morning to see if indeed this was known and yes it was but that Drogon had babies during season 5 was a WTF is this for me

This whole season felt a tad like the writers were being contrarian. I get that they were trying to subvert expected outcomes but I don't feel what they came up with always worked. It did feel like they rushed to wrap up characters storylines at times in the final season and it effected the shows quality.

The finale was never going to please everyone so I'm not shocked at some of the reactions it is getting.

I was shocked Bronn was master of coin. Why would anyone trust Bronn at this point. Bronn looks out for himself 99% so putting him in charge of anything seems like a terrible idea if you care about the stability of the realm. At least Bran will know if Bronn does something shady I suppose.

I actually thought Emilia Clarke did her damndest to sell what she had these last few episodes even though she personally made no secret of not liking it.

Her speech to the Dothraki and the Unsullied did sell me on her heel turn.

Yup, and this is how I think it can happen:

When Bran asks for the whereabouts of Drogon, Sam says “He was last spotted flying east toward Volant–” before Bronn cuts him off. Volantis as you know is the home of Kinvara, the High Priestess of the Red Temple of Volantis, who made a brief appearance in season 6 to lend her support to Team Dany. Kinvara was convinced that Dany was the One who was promised, and would be happy to resurrect her.

Yeah, I didn't think Emilia's reaction to Missandei's death was all that convincing (she looked like a petulant child being sent to her room in that scene), but she was overall pretty good in episode 5 and her speech here was great. I also thought she did well in her last conversation with Jon. It almost made you not want him to kill her.
