Game of Thrones General (Non-Book Related) Discussion Thread - Part 1

I've been thinking about what time of day the battle of Winterfell happens at. In the preview it looks like night, but what if... it's actually day time. I would love for it to be a cold grey snowy day and when the NK and his army arrive he brings so much winter that the clouds grow thick enough to entirely block the sun. Just like the Long Night. And until the NK and his army is defeated at the end of the season the sun doesnt appear again.

It feels like they're writing her dumber and less compassionate than she really is. Its like "HEY EVERYBODY LOOK AT THE TYRANT TARGARYEN"

just doesn't sit well with me

-The Father
The National’s Rains Of Castomere

-The Son
The Hold Steady’s Bear & The Maiden Fair

-The Holy Spirit
Florence + The Machine’s Jenny Of Oldstone

Next week's episode is going to be absolutely lit, man. I wonder how they are going to the tackle the problem of disaster / action fatigue though. An hour of a monotonous war fight can get tedious, but it can be great if executed properly I'm sure.. so it'll be cool to see.

This last episode was so sick. Lots of really satisfying moments.

I’ve always said... GOT is best when it’s heartfelt and hilarious.

I'll be rating the episodes for the last season.
S8 E1 - 8 out of 10.
S8 E2 - 7 out of 10.

This second episode was the pure definition of a filler episode. Tying some loose ends with a nice bow... The calm before the storm one would call it. The very best thing about this episode was Tormund and his scene stealing moments.

My one complaint about this season so far is that a lot of it is incredibly dark and hard to see.
It seems as though the big battle will be like that as well which is not a good sign. Hopefully we'll be able to figure out what is going on... I get that the setting for the episode and battles is dark but you gotta be able to see it to really appreciate the magnitude of it otherwise is somewhat of a waste.

It’s probably your tv/streaming service-device.

I watched on my phone tonight, got back from a 8hr drive from Chicago, and it looked super bright at only 75% phone brightness. When even day scenes look too dark on my television through HBOnow/PS4.

I don't tknow. I've watched the series on the HBO website.
Even the trailers for each episode on Youtube are incredibly dark. And i putt the brightness all the way up too...

Like this one for example. Most of it is very hard to see.

All I can say is wow. I haven't liked an episode this much since at least season 5 (which I mostly liked the first time through). I've had newfound respect for Cogman from my current rewatch of the show (just finished "The Mountain and the Viper"), and this just cemented it. He's clearly the writer with the best intentions of remaining true to the source material, while having the most faithful take on the characters.

This was the first time I've liked Sansa, Brienne and Jaime in years and it was so pleasant to watch their scenes. And it was great to finally see Ghost again (although I know it's only because he'll die next episode). The R+L=J stuff was still rushed and a letdown after so many years, but the Jon/Dany scene was about as good as it could be with the time remaining.

This was a fantastic episode, and I can't think of any major or minor complaints. I really, really hope D&D don't drop the ball with the final four episodes. It's a shame this was Cogman's last episode, but it was a great end cap to his time on the show. Next week can't get here soon enough.

So we know they cant win. And we didnt see them making any plans of retreat. So here's the thing... who is coming in for the save?

I am so worried for Brienne and Jaime now :/ Jaime will probably die defending her or Bran

Loved this episode. So many feels and chuckles and smiles. I'm dreading the next episode and eagerly awaiting it.:(

My one complaint is Jon, on the one hand I get why he waited. He didnt want it distracting anyone before the battle. On the other hand, waiting until the last minute to tell Dany is just bad bad bad. He's left her no time to process it. No time for him and her to discuss it. If they do survive they may not have time to discuss it for a while. He's left it to fester.

I just hope she gets a chance to remember that she loves him and he loves her and if they got married it wouldnt really matter who has the better claim. They could decide how they rule the Kingdoms and their children would be the heirs. The North would be happy with Jon as King and that's good for Dany as Queen.

It's pretty clear Dany's going to go full Mad King by the end of the season. Rewatching her scenes from season 4 it's pretty obvious this was always going to be her path. Incest may have been necessary to keep the Targeryen dragon riding ability, but at least Jon had a Stark mother. The paranoia and bloodthirst was always apparent in Danaerys and seems to be her ultimate undoing. I just wonder how many people she'll take down with her.

Fair warning, the below tag is for a spoiler for future episodes if you want to remain Unsullied:
It's likely that Dany will be the one that puts Tyrion on trial, apparently for all of his massive but still honest mistakes of last season. Believing Cersei was just the last straw.

Dany isnt insane. Her behavior and decisions and reactions are entirely justifiable in the context of her life and experiences and the fact shes been fighting a war for survival her entire life.

That was a fantastic episode of Game of Thrones. It was nothing but a moment to remember who these characters are begin mourning them before they even start dropping like flies next week.

first of that Brienne scene where she gets knighted had me in tears it was so well earned and that smile she gave was everything

Jon and Dany I don't see why Jon waited so long to tell her but I don't see an issue really Jon never wanted the throne he could just tell Dany hey it's all yours I just want the north for my other family

all the character moments were great to see the hound telling Aya that he fought for her when she asked when was the last time you fought for anybody that was also touching

and Gendry well lol he did say "well you wanted me in winterfell" lol thought that was lol and call me crazy but it seem Sansa wanted to break Theon off something too put some "fire" in his face

Tormund origin story didn't know I needed that story to be told but glad I got it lolololololol

Her reactions may be understandable given what she's gone through, but she's always been a little more bloodthirsty than necessary. Burning Miri Maz Duur alive was unnecessary (even though in hindsight it was needed to birth her dragons). Executing hundreds of Wise Masters in retaliation for their slave mile markers was excessive and unwise. Especially on the show, she's always had a touch of Targaryen madness, and it's been exacerbated over the years.

She may be a very caring and empathetic person, but she does not react well to betrayal or people standing in the way of what she feels is owed to her. In hindsight this all seems rather obvious. When her path was unknown you could forgive the odd scene here and there where her bloodlust went overboard, but with the limited time available in these later seasons there's a reason why so many of her scenes focus on her need for power. She granted the Iron Islands their freedom because she needed their fleet, but I could see her reneging on that deal in the future when she's at full strength. She has no such problems with refusing the North their own sovereignty.

it's not like jon knew they were about to attack. he was probably waiting until after the battle anyway but the way she came up to him he probably just had to let it loose.

and yes dany is bat**** insane. shes just also in love.... until now.

dany going full Mad Queen is more likely now I hope not and does Bran know what happens ? he tells Jaime how do you know there is an afterwards ?

when I said jon didnt know they were about to attack. . to be clear I meant RIGHT THEN

This episode was a reflective punch. A smörgåsbord of high impact scenes between unlikely characters. There's a lot to really like here. There were several scenes that actually had me tearing up from the heft of it. There was a whole bunch of sentiment and reflection in this episode, and I loved it. The Knighting scene, and that whole group scene was really quite awesome.

Melissandre I'm guessing.
