Game of Thrones General (Non-Book Related) Discussion Thread - Part 1

How many white walkers are there, anyway? Previously, we've only seen about four of them together at once but last night, it looked like there were 50 or so.

I always thought of whites as zombies in that you’d turn into a white if you were killed by a white. I never thought that the NK could raise all the dead wherever he goes.

Since Season 1, we've known there is a general enchantment in the North which turns corpses into wights after nightfall. It must be in a limited radius from the Night King as the source of this enchantment. We also saw at Hardhome that he can produce this effect manually, on the fly, during the day:

The NK had a similar enchantment around the lair of the 3ER which raised wight skeletons when Bran's party crossed a mystic tripwire. So I think it's reasonable to surmise that the Night King can direct the same effect on the grounds of Winterfell and awaken the dead in the crypts in very similar fashion to this scene:

I've felt that the writing of the show has gone down a bit in quality when they haven't had any novels to rely on, but this far the final season has not been part of this trend.

Again a great episode that really displays the strength of the characters in this story. I'm sure the next episode will be a great and epic battle, but what will make it possible to be great is all the character work done before so everything has meaning.

So we know they cant win. And we didnt see them making any plans of retreat. So here's the thing... who is coming in for the save?

THEON: "I won't make it to the Wall. I won't make it 10 feet past the Winterfell gates."
MAESTER LUWIN: "There are ways. Hidden passageways built so the Lords of Winterfell could escape."

Jon's been giving Dany the cold shoulder since he found out so I'm sure Dany sensed that something is up. Jon's timing was still bad though. I mean I get why he decided to finally spill the beans since they're talking about Lyanna and all that but doing it the night before a big battle is just too risky. Dany could've ended up pulling out her forces or he might find himself 'accidentally' barbecued by one of her dragons.

Why would she do that? The AotD imperil the continent she still wants to rule. There would be no time even if she chose to, the arrival of the AoTD to Winterfell was announced at that moment.

Jon told her because he's unsure (or even doubtful) that they will survive the coming onslaught, so he clearly wanted her to know this extremely important truth before they all potentially perish. He's honest and he loves her, and this was revealed from the respect that goes with that.

Many of the wights are little more than skeletons, and if raised by the Night King they have the power to burst forth out of frozen ground or ice as they did before the lair of the 3ER (at the end of Season 4), or comparably to push off a sarcophagus lid if it's not locked shut!

The one wight transported to King's landing was in a box locked with chains.

Those bodies were preserved by the ice. The Stark bodies have been stored in sealed stone sarcophagi in the crypts. Their bodies should be dust, bones, or sludge. Only Rickon would be much of a threat.

But this is D&D. Logic and science be damned if they want a bunch of Stark wights theyll have Stark wights.

Yeah they were so "preserved" that there was no longer any flesh on them! :funny: Some ancient corpses have held together fairly well in Egypt and South America when they were interred in cool, dry, dark places and not directly in the dirt.

Sealed with what? Superglue? Ancient sarcophagi in our world are simply stone lids placed on coffins most of the time, their weight holding them in place. In the cases where some primitive cement was used it quickly becomes crumbly and has no adhesive integrity at all. If the wights were strong enough to burst out of the ground like that (which takes considerable strength) then they can can also toss coffin lids off.

LOL! What science? What makes you think this world is on our planet? We have giants, dragons and a Night King that can raise the dead. We have people who can become part of trees and still be alive or can change their faces and their voices. We have a woman who can walk through fire and a couple of men be killed and brought back to life. You need to take everything you think of about this world and chuck it out the window when trying to apply it to the world of Game of Thrones.

D&D richly deserve criticism for plenty of things in this show, but c'mon man, we're talking about magic that raises wights, holds them together, and gives them strength! None of it makes sense if we're going to cite science.

How will Melisandre save the day then?

While I do believe Melisandre will return with a brigade of red priests armed with firebrands, I would be really surprised if that happens in the next one. Maybe episodes 4 or 5 to help achieve the final defeat of the AotD.

Loved last night's episode. Probably one of the best GoT episodes that doesn't involve action. It's basically one big bottle episode... and I don't know how anyone could call this a filler episode. It's everything but that.

How will Melisandre save the day then?

This is just unconfirmed rumor that I read last year:

Supposedly Mel and other Red Priests take control of some of the wights at Kings Landing.

I also read that Mel manages to take control of NK's dragon.

But I'm skeptical. It seems a bit much even for this season. I expect the final battle to be desperate and very one sided. Not a bunch of high magic being wielded on both sides.

I now don't expect Dany to survive either.

Sansa will rule the north.
Gendry and Arya will take control of king's landing.
