The Last Jedi General Episode VIII News/Speculation/SPOILER Thread - - - - Part 13

Btw - somewhat random, but SW-related - there’s a documentary on Netflix right now called “The Toys That Made Us”, and the whole first episode is dedicated to the old Kenner SW toy line. Its really good - check it out if you get a chance.

It's great. Just sad that they only released half, with the other half sometime later. I hope they do more, because there is some glaring omissions. That He-man episode though....

Do we know if the crystal from the saber survived the explosion? Personally I'd rather they went with a different colour (always wanted to see a live action yellow blade) so that the internet explodes with people complaining about where Rey could have found a new kyber crystal. :o

Fun fact, in the new canon, the Force user can change the crystal color. I do love what they have done with Kybur crystals, making them slightly force sensitive, and that they bond with a force user. Ahsoka's white sabers and the Imperial era red sabers are all changed from their original colors.

"It's not my fault!!"

People are entitled to feel however they like. But people saying, "that doesn't feel like Star Wars" while ignoring the content of 6 Star Wars films and the 6 seasons of TCW that all came before Disney started making creative decisions, just feels intellectually dishonest to me. As one who spends a bit of time on TheForce.net, I see it a lot.

I think people have unrealistic memories of the OT.

Which is one reason why this movie didn't set well with a lot of fans. I loved the film, and my first viewing still rattled me emotionally.

"I thought they smelled bad... On the outside..."

"One thing's for sure, we're all going to be a lot thinner!"

Han didn't even call Leia by her name until halfway through ESB, and when he finally did, he did it to annoy her.

And another one (not Han's) that I remember the audience roaring at way back when:

"Listen to them, they're DYING, R2! Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!"

Speaking of Threepio:

"I merely commented that it was freezing in the Princess's chamber. But it's SUPPOSED to be freezing! How we're going to dry out all her clothes, I really don't know. ...oh, switch off!"

I keep reading people complaining that they wanted to see some big mighty Jedi warrior Luke in TLJ...and, well....

"Looking? Found someone you have I would say, hm?"
"I don't think so. I'm looking for a great warrior."
"Great warrior? Wars not make one great."

"A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense. Never for attack."

"Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."

"Luke would never think of killing someone!!!! It contradicts the end of RotJ completely!!!!"

"Why didn't Luke kill the entire First Order with a laser sword!!!!?"

"Why the hell did he say laser sword!!!!!?

Its funny. I have plenty of problems with TLJ, even as I like it a lot. It shook me in a way few films have. But none of those problems have to do with the OT or how those heroes are handled and nearly everything to do with the general film structure and filmmaking in general.

"I saw your laser sword. Only a Jedi carries that kind of weapon."

"I saw your laser sword. Only a Jedi carries that kind of weapon."
"I see you have constructed a new laser sword. Your skills are complete. Indeed you are powerful, as the Emperor has foreseen."

Has that been done on TCW or in a game? Seems familiar.

Or am I just thinking of the lightsabre builds sets?

The closest I can think of atm is from Star Wars Rebels which appears to be folded although I am sure there are plenty examples in the old EU and it wouldn't be had to make, its just two sabers that can be connected together at the hilt.

I'm open to correction here but I don't think the lightsabre colour is decided by the colour of the crystal.

I think all the crystals in the Younglings arc on TCW are blue but some of the blades are green.

It is decided by the crystal. All Kyber crystals are initially colourless until the Jedi bonds with it while building the saber when it takes on a colour (nearly always blue or green). Sith sabers are red as they have to force the bonding, a process they call bleeding, that results in the crystal taking on a red colour. The blades Ahsoka carries in Rebels were from cleansing sith crystals, which turned them white. Beyond Red and White crystals there is no canon explanation for the reason that normal crystals became the colour they did. In some of the old RPG and computer games they tried to give reasons for it but it has never been canon. All we know is Blue and Green are normal, Mace's Purple blade is unusual and that the Jedi Temple guards carried yellow blades but its likely that the yellow blades were their ceremonial while on duty and not the guards's personal weapons.

Yeah, man. People forget how much funny stuff there is in Empire, darkest of the OT as it may be, it's got all the same stuff that A New Hope does.

Han, Chewie, R2 & 3P0, random aliens, Yoda.

But nah, Rian ****ed that all up and added...the same humor that's always been there. What a jackass.

I have seen the OT so many times it’s etched in my memory. But just for good measure, I watched them all again before seeing TLJ. And I still hated what they did with Luke and some other stuff.

I don’t hate the movie overall, but I have HUGE problems with it.

For the record I have only read the last page so sorry if I took your comments out of context.

Yes, I had the same experience. My second and third viewing didn't have that aspect at all and I was able to enjoy the film much more as a result.

I really think if people allowed themselves to keep an open mind, you'd see a lot more people coming around. Unfortunately, these days, you can so easily fall down a rabbit hole of Youtube videos and clickbait articles that keep you in a feedback loop (not too dissimilar to politics) that will only solidify your original position and cause you to double or triple down just to maintain that your opinion is "correct".

Yes, that can swing the other way too if you liked the film as there are articles/videos to validate that, but personally for me it comes down to what I felt when I was watching it, how I felt walking out of the theater, and what I get out of it on rewatches. There's just too much noise out there, and most films would fall apart when subjected to the amount of extreme hatred that this is being flanked with from all sides.

I find myself kind of bummed out in the wake of this film, because while I always knew it...it just solidifies my feeling that it's very hard to find a mature discourse about a movie like this in the geek world. EVERYONE has an opinion that feel is all-so-important, and it's just such easy fodder for clicks or subscriptions to get up on a soap box and preach to the choir.

A bit off-topic I know, but I watched a few "TLJ SUCKS!" rants just for a laugh...and now my Youtube recommendations are flooded with them, and it's kind of bumming me out now.

I'm more than happy to have an honest, civil conversation with someone with an opposing view, but IMO fandom is sinking into new levels of toxic with this film. I just find it unfortunate, because at its heart this is still a family movie about space wizards, and there's still plenty of fun to be had in TLJ imo. It's still very much a Star Wars movie. People need to lighten up a little. NONE of the SW films would survive the level of "..and THIS was stupid too!" as this movie is getting.

At this point, I'm looking beyond TLJ given the behavior i've seen from fanboys who love this film and hate it. I really don't see much of a difference between the two sides at this point.

I'm really not crazy about the film , though it's interesting film to talk about the film. The problem is , like other geek related film properties , fanboys are so dogmatic in their beliefs and feelings over it that they handle someone having a different opinion.

I do think alot of this polarization has to do with the fact that the film is still fresh and emotions are still raw about it. By the time Episode 9 comes out, things will have calmed down.

Right now, either side, including geek pundits across the web, are trying to use numbers, stats, scores, box office, quotes, conspiracy theories ,and anecdotal evidence to prove their opinion is right as opposed to being secure enough in their feelings to except someone else may disagree.

I do think this is gonna be the new normal with social media being as powerful as it is now, as opposed to 5 years ago.

What I am curious about are why many of the lieutenants of the anti TLJ crusade are DCEU monks. Are they waging a proxy war on marvel through Star Wars? You can see the bitterness about Justice League pouring out in these threads even though DC has nothing to do with Star Wars.

I think so too, and that's what bums me out. I actually do like- maybe even love TLJ, but this isn't about me lamenting the fact that it's getting trashed. It's lamenting what social media has done to us. As a society as a whole, not just the fan world.

No choice but to tune it out at this point. I just don't have the energy.

They are angry and upset for multiple reasons, and maybe they feel they've gotten the short end of the stick. Meanwhile, the Star Wars movies continue to get great reviews and rake in over $1 billion at the box office. They feel like they are "losing."

That's the thing though, since when was DC in war with Star Wars? I thought the competition was with the MCU.

Eh I mean they are both Disney at the end of the day. The enemy.

Maybe there's a perception in there that it's unfair that Star Wars movies still get mostly good reviews despite all the criticism and debate about the films being rehashes and fans being polarized or disappointed.
