The Rise of Skywalker General Star Wars Episode IX News/Speculation Thread - Part 1

Just looking too at the list of run times there, TLJ did not need to be as long as it was. I never realized it was the top of the group in run time.

J.J. Abrams reveals the real running time for 'The Rise of Skywalker'
Considering the leaks, it makes sense. Though considering what he says there, I am curious if that means this is without credits.

This is the end... the end-end.

We might never be with/see Poe, Rey, or Finn again and their last film is less than 2 and a half hours.

Considering they have to cap off the prequels, the OT, and the ST with this film.

Introducing the Knights of Ren, Zorii, Jannah, General Pryde, and reintroducing Sidious while also tying up storytelling from three trilogies in a movie that's only 2 hrs. 21 mins. I find that hard to believe. Sure, we can say movies like Return of the Jedi did the same thing, but the Emperor was really the only "new" character fully introduced in that movie, right?

Yeah...this is still up for debate, I feel. If J.J. was not including the end credits, then it would essentially be 2:30ish.

As a side note, I heard an excerpt from Anthony Daniels' new book where he talks about the filming of TROS. He mentions that the rewrites during shooting were constant, and he was worried that some of his favorite scenes and some of the more emotional scenes were being cut to accommodate a more "manageable" runtime. But he then goes on to say that for each thing they cut, they replaced it with something even better.

I'm really curious how it all pans out. It definitely sounds like J.J. and Terrio were working overtime to make sure the story was exactly what it needed to be.

Also, according to Daniels, both Carrie and Mark were "appalled" at their roles in TFA. Carrie was apparently much happier with her role in TLJ, but obviously Mark's issues are well-documented lol. Anthony also shares a touching e-mail Mark sent him after his last day of filming on TROS. It's all so bittersweet.

I am definitely curious to see how this all plays out. That being said, this movie is about Rey and Kylo, and to a lesser extent Poe and Finn. All the new characters will be there, but much like how the OT almost always focused on Luke, Vader, Leia and Han. We remember all the characters, but think about how much actual screen time a lot of them get. Now think about how much screen time they get alone. If Rey, Finn and Poe really do spend a lot of time together, that is a lot of time for Finn and Poe. It's the same for Kylo who isn't going to spending a lot of time on his own. Basically this isn't a "we go our own ways" film. It's everyone is coming together film. The Emperor will be spending all his time with other characters I would presume. Pryde will probably be a lesser Piett. I also don't expect much from the Knights in terms of character. They will be a presence, hopefully a big one. But they are silent heavies I assume are there to get it on with our Force wielders. Zorii and Jannah, whatever time they have, will be in direct character interaction with our existing heroes.

As to RotJ, everyone outside of Boba at Jabba's Palace is new, including Jabba. The entire race of Ewoks, including Wicket, are new. Mon Mothma is new. Nien Nunb is new.

It's remarkable how few principal characters there are in the OT, comparatively speaking.

Are there? Let's get rid of the strict definition of principal character, because that would just mean Luke and Rey. Let's look at "major" characters from each film. Not simply based on their status, but their role in the film.

Star Wars
Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, Chewie, Threepio, Obi-Wan, and Tarkin.

Empire
Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, Chewie, Threepio, Yoda, and Lando.

Jedi
Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, Chewie, Threepio, Lando, Jabba, and the Emperor.

Awakens
Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Hux, Han and Chewie.

TLJ
Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Leia, Hux, Snoke, DJ, and Luke.

I'd say TLJ is missing Rose and Holdo.

My thicc queen Rose better have a lot of screentime.
That's not happening. But here, enjoy this creepy bit of art to hold you over.
