No one says you have to do the background arc. Just stick to the character and his adventures with Ghost Rider. I personally think they were more interesting that JB's b/c Ketch has a family to protect. Remember GR #5? Blackout kills his sister in the hospital and later on he kills Dan himself.
And Vol. 2 didn't fail due to a background story. It failed b/c Marvel insisted on taking the character to hell and back. It was only when Howard Mackie stopped writing the stories that the series took a turn for the worse; Ivan Velez wrote crap stories, I'm sorry.
Creating a Dan Ketch plot will DEFINITELY cause a lot of hard work. He's such a complicated character, & with Velez' run eventually ruining his comic, I doubt Marvel has any more interest in him. Most-likely he'll return in the new series, but only as a supporting character-& stick with it, too! The origins don't have to be changed, but I doubt we'll ever hear from it, again. And no, the very moment "Noble Kale" was created there was no doubt that Vol. 2 was on a steady path of demise. I respect your support for the "descendant arc" Doom, but many veteran fans agree with me that that arc started it all.
Was it really necessary to make such a complicated back-story? Howard Mackie was right when he said that "Marvel was making a big mistake in creating an entirely new character instead of just focusing on the established original",- a.k.a. Johnny Blaze. Look at the result of all this: A divided fan community, a jumbled back-story, and an entirely convoluted plot that only serves to complicate things further!
I just hope Vol. 5 will be able to repair all this damage.....
