So by doing this... i take it Sony doesn't care about merchandising....

If Dan & Ernie have nothing to do with this as Ray & Winston,I'm out.

No, but if it's true, I think it's stupid. What's the point? Maybe they should reboot Charlie's Angels next, with male leads.
That's not the same as this and you're smart enough to know that. Female leads are a rare vehicle even in an age where people go to see more movies with them.

Changing a team that originated as a female group to a group of males = sexist and a problem.

Changing a team that was male to a group of females = not sexist, not a problem as long as the female characters are strong characters that work as well as the males, which is entirely possible.

That's actually quite true. The studios forget that only men will buy every single piece of collectible garbage that comes out of a movie property they like. I say this while being buried under a pile of He-Man Classics action figures.

Because action figures and a bunch of other merchandise of a bunch of men in their 60s was totally going to sell major cash with today's young hip audience.

Yes, merchandise of female characters is a tougher sale, but I'd rather see a group of young characters fighting ghosts than a bunch of old men. They had their time. They did well.

Why not let someone else have a chance? Male or female.

Todays hip young audience is still engulfed by the pop culture of the 80s and 90s.

Ghostbusters merch would still sale, as it always has. It was inevitable that they would pass the torch. But those characters should probably still exist in that world, to show support to the new team.

nah. They're going to make even more money.

The original team still exist. I doubt they are going to stop selling the original toys and merchandise.

Now they'll have girls wearing this version and buying toys.

I was down for the all-girl gimmick, but a full reboot killed my interest. Stupid, pointless, inflammatory decision.

I think thats what a lot of people are concerned about, that the characters wont be anything but shallow stereotypes while some may have enjoyed the heat it basically boiled down to frigid workaholic and fat angry woman trope

I knew there was a reason i liked you lol. but as another matt veteran you should know that female character never sell well and are just girly lines and dont need to be reisssued :whatever:

I don't see the point of a reboot. Seems like they could come up with a lot of good reasons for a different team existing.

Still hoping for Amy Poehler and Kristen Bell.

This all female thing is kind of genius. Feig is basically ensuring that this film is immune to criticism.

Being a reboot of a classic and beloved series, it was going to be raked over the coals no matter what. With an all female gimmick though? No one will dare **** on it (at least not publicly) and anyone who does will be called out for MUH SEXISM. You can already see it in this thread. Don't like this brave and progressive new direction for the series? Clearly you're just a backwards, closed-minded misogynist. It's the perfect get out of jail free card.

You're actually right, all criticism, no matter how justifiable it may be when the end product hits the screens, is going to be branded as sexist, as such a proper discussion of the film is probably never going to eventuate.

Yeah, cause no female comedy has ever gotten a bad rating.

Just like anything about gay people is automatically award worthy.

Ray & Winston's cameo in an all female Ghostbusters:

Ray is on a ladder dusting books in Ray's Occult book store.
Winston sits at a desk reading a newspaper. He opens to a story on the All Female Team.He motions to Ray-

Winston: "I thought Ghostbusters were men?"

Ray (Looking wistful): "It's whatever they want it to be."

Nobody is gonna bash anything gaycentric except other gays, lol.

Paul Feig:

"Well, I love hilarious women, Ghostbusters, and origin stories. I should make a new Ghostbusters reboot with an all-female lead cast!!!"

Amy Pascal:

"...Oh, what the hell. Sony's already in shambles. Do whatever you want, weirdo."

Yeah, I can see it basically being that.

I couldn't be more unhappy with the real possibility of Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig getting roles. I hate them both with a fiery passion. I can't imagine who else would be on their short list of female comedy actresses. Truly depressing.

Emma Stone is a definite Yes for me though. She alone might convince me to go to the theater.

By having all females, they're missing HUGE opportunities by not having people like Bill Hader, or Fred Armisen, or Donald Glover, Paul Rudd, or Jason Segal. They would absolutely SHINE.

The only way - ONLY WAY - I'll get excited about this film is if they DON'T cast McCarthy or Wiig, and instead go for more interesting options like Tina Fey or Amy Poehler.

So basically we're getting the gay Ghostbusters now? Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, Sir Ian McKellen and Henry Cavill (we're working on him).

Marginalizing female comedians? CHECK!

Everyone's 2nd favorite quirky white girl in their 20s? CHECK!

Rampant vagina-phobia?! CHECK!!!

Safe choice to dissuade others from thinking your opinions are anything but delightfully sexist? CHECK!!!!

That sounds more compelling than a female team.:woot:

: Legen ... wait for it ... dary!

:dry:: Bazinga!

:mad:: You! Shall! Not! Pass!

:csad:: I've only been in one thing people have seen, so I don't have a catchphrase.

Well, that was fast. And it's been less than 24 hours.

I'm calling it now. If this reboot fails, it will be because we're all sexist basement-dwelling misogynist nerd pigs who didn't give women a chance.

That's the way Hollywood works these days. It relies on scapegoat blanket arguments and ad hominems to silence people. No matter how many times we bring up potential issues with the film...all of that won't matter.

I should get myself checked for clairvoyance :o.

They do have a point. Nothing the person said was inherently and blatantly sexist, but they have a point...

If this reboot was with an all male cast or a mixed cast of males and females there'd be less of an outcry right now and you all know it's true.

There's a latent reading in this thread that says that most of you are simply not okay with the male roles in this film/reboot being supporting roles only.

Even if that would be the case, the vast majority of outcries over the cast can be traced to specific sources, such as the specific actors they seem to be going for (Melissa McCarthy, etc.) and the films the director alluded to being an inspiration (Bridesmaids, etc.). In an all male or mixed cast, at least one of those sources wouldn't apply.

A couple of our "sexist" posters have already brought up potential females they'd cast that would get them on board. Emma Stone has been rumored to be on board for a while, long before Jonah Hill or any other of the male rumors popped up.

Furthermore, there's also a matter of the director's attitude and intentions that people are taking into account. It's beyond blatant Feig and Co. are setting up the pitch as a potential get-out-of-jail free card in case the reboot is panned. They're looking for a means to silence criticism in the case of a poor product, which in turn could have serious consequences on the quality of overall product given one knows the outcome would be in his or her favor either way. Anyone like that is a red flag and should not be given the benefit of the doubt.
