Even a bad critic is informative. If you think they have poor taste or bad takes, you can avoid the things they love, ha.

Someone I like a lot and respect their opinion even if I don't agree with it is Dan Murrell he gave Ghostbusters: Afterlife a very positive review.

I like Dan Murrell so that's good to see. I'm not concerned at all tbh. I think I have a good handle on what this movie is going to deliver, and I'm ready for it. The fact that he's saying the movie might be a little "slow" for some people is music to my ears.

I’ve noticed a lot of the negative reviews seem to criticize how Afterlife has too much fan catering and even compare it to The Force Awakens. How the hell is that a bad thing especially with how terrible the 2016 movie was?

Despite some of its faults I personally liked The Force Awakens, it was The Last Jedi that completely crapped the bed and ended up killing the sequel trilogy for me. As long as Afterlife’s the new characters are likable, has an entertaining story, and honors the legacy of the past two films then I call that a win

I already have my tickets for Friday night and I can’t wait!

Roxy Striar also not a fan, takes forever for something to happen, too serious but the last 7 minutes are awesome.

Is Roxy Striar considered a critic? Whenever I watch her, I feel like she barely knows anything.

She's not a RT critic or Hollywood Critic's Association member unlike Campea and John Rocha respectively from the former Collider folk but she get invites to advanced screenings and gets screeners for movies. She does tend to have different tastes than others, at least me, some times. She was watching it with another former Collider, Dorina, who apparently liked it even less. But as I mentioned, she said the last 7 minutes were awesome ans she was puzzled why the rest of the movie wasn't at that level. Seems it took far too long to set up things and was lacking in humor.

Perri Nemiroff was also gave it a rotten.

This bit from the Flickering Myth review at RT sounds odd:

It's never a good sign when a film is preceded by a quick prerecorded video of the director (in this case, it's Jason Reitman, the son of Ghostbusters 1984 helmer Ivan Reitman) proclaiming that what viewers are about to see is an extreme Easter Egg hunt

I love GBII. Can't blame it for being the same formula as the first since a ton of 90s sequels did the same (most notably in my head being TMNT II). The subway scene scared the heck out of me when I was a kid, had to turn away every time. I thought the pop music used was "fresh" and super catchy. I can't call it a better film than the first, but it is super enjoyable and just as quotable. I can understand it not being people's cup of tea, but always felt the level of hate/scrutiny for it was unwarranted. Oh well.

I also work right next to the museum, and am disappointed every year around this time until New Years when I don't see any Vigo occurrences.

Sorry if this has been brought up in previous pages, but is there an estimate to how much this is expected to make this weekend?

I saw some people saying that this movie straight up retcons GBII and says Vigo never happened. I really hope it's more just that it's not mentioned, vs. anything to straight up contradict those events ever taking place. That would seriously rub me the wrong way.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just not mentioned. People like to confuse the two for no reason. I guess they’re too used to sequels connecting everything these days (though we know that Ray’s shop from GB2 is shown in the trailer)

Semi-serious question: do we really need movie critics nowadays?
It's the best way to get recommendations on stuff I'd have missed otherwise.

Yes. However, we need actual film critics. We can do without bloggers/fans who pretend they are critics along with the entire Rotten Tomatoes system (aka the McDonaldization of Film Criticism).
What makes an "actual film critic"?

Duh, right! That really annoys me that someone would think that now. It was Doug from Channel Awesome. A lack of mention is not at all the same thing as a retcon.

That's your own fault. :o

Just gonna say... A lot of the reviews I'm seeing do point out the same issue with the film that we've discussed, that being that this is apparently a very earnest and reverential film in regards to the GB mythology but that is a detriment to it actually evoking Ghostbusters '84 given it's actual tone as a film about slobby schlubby scientists doing something crazy but treating it like blue collar work.

Like... The concept is inherently A JOKE.

Even the positive reviews so far note they traded humor for sincerity and this makes the movie a bit dull at times.

Is there a reason it needs to match the tone of the original flick? Two of the best sequels, Aliens and T2, do not match the tone of the original flicks.

I have yet to see it so I can't know if the reviews will reflect what I think. They could be wrong.

To your point though... No one calls either T2 or ALIENS dull. That seems to be the issue. It is filled with fan service but that alone doesn't make it entertaining or good automatically and if these review are accurate then yes, trading the humor that's always been a part of the franchise in every form for earnestness may have been the wrong move or leaning into it hard.

A very good boiling down of this can be found on the Movie Bob YT channel who has seen it.

Language makes it not possible to post here but I suggest giving it a look. The video maker himself wasn't describing a "bad" movie, he praised many aspects but when it was all said and done he placed it on the same level as the 2016 movie. Far from an abomination but not really reaching any heights either.

Being dull and having a different tone aren't the same thing. This movie might be dull. I can totally buy that. But that doesn't mean it had to match the tone of the original. Just do more interesting things with the dull bits.
