Haven't seen it yet, though some of the reactions here are interesting in a good way. My biggest issue in the marketing was the Stay Puft Marshmellow Men cringe 'memberberries, it was...egregious. I see that they're Force Awakens-ing the movie up for better or worse because that tactic is what made all the money 6 years ago.

Unfortunately the last Ghostbusters movie 5 years ago apparently salted the earth as far as the brand goes for the older audience and the youth audience of today doesn't really care much either.

Just saw it and I thought it was ok.

I think there's a lot of heart behind it and I was really enjoying everything in the first hour and a half as well as what the kids were discovering about the villain. Then we get to the third act and while I liked what they were doing on paper, it felt very rushed.

Also found myself cringing at some stuff towards the end which unfortunately felt forced and hurt the film for me. It actually reminds me of Ghostbusters II in that respect. However I'm happy for folks who loved the final 10-15 minutes.

I didn't care for the Mini Pufts, but they don't make or break the film in any way. They are forced marketing cringe. Straight out of the 80s.

I've seen a lot of comparisons in reviews to Force Awakens but honestly I'd say this delivers more to GB fans how Mando Season 2 did in the right areas. I don't know, the nostalgia thing is tough to hit the right balance for everyone. But also the mythos of the property do require a certain amount.

GB2, GB 2016 and this film all have tried to hit the nostalgia (or just reminding you) of the first one with bringing back the same exact beats and gags. This one imo is the most successful at trying or literally recreating them.

Hope this does well and we can get some sequels that want to break free but still stay closer in tone to the original like this did.

I would add this as a possibility too...

For how many years s have we heard "reboots/remakes suck" as a given among fans in places just like the Hype?

At some point that attitude becomes hardened to the point it is just reflexive.

The reality is that most of them do usually suck.

Just saw it...it wasn't bad.

Keep in mind I have no real nostaligia for the first film. I'm not sure I even saw the second one. Did not see the attempted reboot a few years ago. A friend had a private screening and invited me, so I went. The rest of the crowd seemed to laugh more than I did (there was one good chuckle from me in it). I didn't mind the end thing...until it dragged on a bit too much and went past its welcome for me.

I liked it...but won't bother watching it again.

This is one of those movies where I will be listening to the fan reviews a lot more than the critics, and many of the reviews in here are getting me hyped!

Yep, love seeing the fan reactions. As someone who really loves both 1 and 2 and does have a lot of nostalgia for the franchise, I'm not sure this movie can go too wrong for me even if it's not perfect.

Got my tickets for tonight! This is one of those movies that just makes me feel like a kid again going to the cinema, it has been easily one of my most anticipated films in years. Fingers crossed!

Although I wasn’t born in the 80s, Ghostsbusters had a profound impact on my childhood so I was cautiously optimistic about this new entry since the Paul Feig “reboot” was absolute garbage. Fortunately, this operates as a cross between an homage to the first film and an introduction for a younger audience who aren’t familiar with Ghostbusters. For the most part, it was a success—especially with enough nods to the original without being too much. However, where it loses me is the third act.

1. Murray, Aykroyd, and Hudson showing up felt forced, but I understand the need to include them. I just wish it was done more organically

2. Wolfhard and Kim’s sudden knowledge of using the Ghostbuster equipment was completely ridiculous and even Grace suddenly being almost an expert after one quick testing period seemed ludicrous.

So this movie acts like GB2 didn’t happen?

I haven't seen the film yet, but I kinda doubt that's the case. The trailer shows Ray's Occult Books which was established in GB 2. I also listened to the recent Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Jason Reitman and Josh Horowitz ribbed Jason about not including any Vigo references. Jason responded with, "hey this is just one movie and it's a big mythology." Came across like he wouldn't be opposed to that being revisited in a later film though and definitely didn't seem like his intention was to de-canonize the events of 2. I think he understands that Vigo is pretty iconic in his own right, too.

I would guess that it's more 'minimized', in that the events of the first film are more of what's focused on in this film, than flat out erased.

If there are any lines that mention something about "they broke up after that whole thing in 84", then yeah, it might seem like they are playing a bit loose with continuity (no idea if they do, just guessing). In a movie that is clearly such a love letter to his dad's franchise though (and Ivan actually says he's still proud of 2), I think it's absolutely still canon in the technical sense. Probably just a matter of streamlining the history a bit to simplify for the general audience. And again, Ray's Occult Books being featured is a clear reference to the second film.

I hear this brought up a lot, and it just occurred to me that maybe it needs to be reframed as "what in GBII would need to be referenced?"

"Remember when the Statue of Liberty marched down New York City on New Years Eve to Higher and Higher by Howard Huntsberry!"

So after processing it all night, I think I need to see the film again. I still really enjoy it in my mind, but I’m left with a weird feeling. I think what it is, is that the original is my favorite film of all time. I love GBII. Hell, I don’t mind 2016 for the most part, it just wasn’t what I wanted as fan. So now on the other side of a 30 year wait, I can say...it wasn’t the film I built up in my head. The trailers told me that, the amount of time and Ramis passing already told me that, but yet, I still feel a bit hollow. Maybe the video game gave me an idea of what I was hoping for, even if it too was a bit of a retread. But I guess I’m kind of coming to terms with it all finally being over. I don’t doubt there will be more, but figuring this was the last ride for all our guys together, it’s a bit of a bitter sweet feeling.

Jason Reitman confirms it’s canon. Tagged for tiny Easter egg spoilers.

No, Ghostbusters II, definitely canon. There are references to Ghostbusters II in Afterlife. We meet Ray working at Ray’s Occult. The toaster from Ghostbusters II is in the kitchen in the farmhouse. There’s actually lots of lost of Ghostbusters II details but nobody knows Ghostbusters II outside of Vigo the Carpathian and the Ghostbusters IIlogo. So there’s this assumption that it is not canon but it is definitely canon.

$4.5m Thursday. In comparison, the 2016 one did $3.4m, which was obviously outside a pandemic. We will have to see where it goes, but real chance it beats projections from $28m-35m. If it does that, with it's production cost and Thanksgiving next week, get ready for an announcement of Afterlife 2 soon.

I actually do want to know, at what point before the events of this movie, when Egon’s living in Oklahoma, did he look at the Ecto-1 and decided he needed to remove the Ghostbusters II logo with the ghost holding the two up and go back to the original logo?

I wish I could talk to you about that.

That’s actually a secret?

Well, I’m just saying that’s a plot that is not in this film and we have ideas moving forward.

I see.

And Ghostbusters II is canon.

People keep wondering if it is or not.

Look like this could be heading to a rotten at RT.

Honestly, the verdict's in: Audiences are enjoying the movie, critics have an agenda out for it. Wish we could just pull the plug on this culture war nonsense already.
