Glee Episode V: The Sylvester Strikes Back - - - - - Part 14

I like Blaine and Sam much more as a couple when they're fighting. Their gooey, lovey dovey breakfast chit chat was borderline sickening.

Did you mean to say Blaine and Kurt, or were you sarcastically calling Blaine and Sam a couple?

Jesus, that Freudian slip... :lmao:

Yes I meant Kurt, not Sam.

Whatever one's opinion of Klaine, I will say I like that Glee has become more forthright about actually portraying them like a couple. Kissing more regularly, us seeing them in bed together, referencing the fact that, yea, they have sex, etc. That's a positive thing that goes beyond Klaine themselves and whether you ship them or not, IMO.

Fair enough. They are putting out a good message or portrayal, I suppose. I would just be more in Klaine's corner if, at this point in the series, I wasn't so easily irritated by ALL of these characters.

My play-by-play begins. I enjoyed this episode more than most of this season.

I find it quite a bit of a stretch that Rachel gets the star treatment of a limo and a chauffeur in her first ever Broadway role. I think Rachel having to struggle and work her way up in halfway realistic fashion and learning humility would be a more interesting storyline than having her diva ways rewarded with instant success on a silver platter.

I liked seeing Klaine wake up in bed together for the above reasons, although it's ridiculous that we're supposed to believe Blaine sleeps in his helmet of gel. Seriously? What happened to Glee at least occasionally acknowledging his natural hair, like at Rachel's drunk party in Season 2, or Season 3 Prom? No one sleeps like that, and if they did, they wouldn't do it on my pillows. I can't see someone as finicky as Kurt letting that much gel sleep on his pillows.

Their breakfast scene was admittedly lovey-dovey, but unlike I think most people here, I still ship Klaine, so I can't say I minded. In fact, I liked finally seeing them as a domestic cohabiting couple. It's kind of like seeing hundreds of fanfics become canon.

Darren's voice is very well-suited to crooner-style songs. I thought "You Make Me Feel So Young" was totes cray cray adorbs, sue me.

lol @ the meta about Sam looking like a dirty hippie.

And of course nobody looks weird at these dorky kids running around singing in the street.

I do like that Glee is touching on how living with a significant other isn't all sunshine and roses. No matter how much you love someone, actually living with them is gonna take a lot of adjustment and you're gonna be a lot more aware of their every annoying little mannerism than you ever were before, and spending 24/7 together with no time apart like Blaine is doing with Kurt isn't healthy. So that's a realistic relationship problem. Bravo to Glee for coming up with relationship drama that doesn't involve their usual defaults of cheating and/or love triangles.

Sam's haircut was a glorious moment.

I'm glad Glee isn't pretending all these neurotic and self-centered people wouldn't be totally dysfunctional and annoying all living in the same cramped space.

lol @ Rachel making Artie's problems all about her.

A couple times I've really felt like the show was building up to Kurt cheating on Blaine with Adam Lambert, but in a way I'm glad we didn't rehash a cheating storyline. Also, two gay men can just be friends without sleeping together. I kind of wish Lambert was sticking around. I've found him enjoyable and I think their friendship is healthy for Kurt. Kurt seems to unwind with Elliott in a way we don't really see him do much.

Klaine's argument felt natural to their characters. Blaine is clingy and needy and insecure and Kurt is haughty and self-centered, and all those personality traits fed into their fight. It felt like a fight those two characters would actually have, unlike some of the contrived forced drama Glee shoehorns in for the sake of manufactured drama.

Okay, Blaine lost me with the whole barging into Elliott's apartment and accusing him of trying to steal Kurt. It's also a bit rich how Blaine gets totally over-the-top and paranoid about suspecting Kurt of cheating when Blaine is the one who cheated before. It reminds me of Finn flying to New York just to go all Bourne Identity on Brody over a situation he had nothing to do with. Finn and Blaine's deep relationship insecurity issues bring out the worst in them (or brought, in Finn's case).

Klaine's makeup conversation was decent. And plus for Glee actually acknowledging they have a sex life, which it used to be Victorian levels of coy about.

Samcedes is back on, which I will accept gladly if it means we're veering well away from those disturbing hints of Samchel earlier in the season. Although Sam is finally back to being attractive. Mercedes looks really good these days too.

Trivia alert: one of the student extras in the mime scene was Colfer's real boyfriend.

Lea's dad made an appearance too.

I actually enjoyed this episode though I really miss Kitty (And obviously Finn as well). Samcedes was great though, that was always one of my favorite storylines so I'm glad to see it back.

It wasnt a bad episode but wow did everything move really QUICKLY. 3 1/2 storylines were introduced and ended in record amount of time. Like if this wasnt already at the end of the season, I would expect some of if not all of this stuff to last several episodes.

Santanas presence was greatly missed but it was nice to have Mercedes around again, but that 2nd bedroom totally belongs to SANTANA not Sam! And yes Rachel does need Santana to put her in her place like yesterday. 99% of everything about Rachel was annoying.

Mercedes must have some serious dough to be living in that place.

I am not ready for this PSA episode next week that is going to make everything rainbows and lollipops by the end of the episode.

Adam seriously needs to be added to the cast though.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I REALLY liked last nights episode.

I've known Lima has been the worst problem with the show for a while, but having it eliminated completely from an episode has done wonders. Hope it lasts.

Glee's problem is that it tried to have its cake and eat it too.

I firmly believe that you can have shows that are primarily about characters and shows that are primarily about places. Obviously they go hand in hand (characters have to occupy a place either way). But there are shows like St. Elsewhere and E/R which follow a specific space and follow the goings on of that hospital. All the Law & Order shows are about the NYPD departments. Then there are shows about characters, which I don't think I need to explain. Just pick a show that follows a character or a set of characters around. That's most shows. From Lost to How I Met Your Mother to Breaking Bad to The Sopranos.

Glee tried to have it both ways. Keep focusing on the original characters who had graduated and also keep focusing on the Glee Club. I definitely think that either option is entirely valid (especially if Will Schuster maintained his role as a main character). But now it feels like they're committing to following a certain set of characters, which I think will ultimately better the show in the long run.

Yea, I didn't hate anything for once. I didn't care about Artie's storyline, but he didn't actively annoy me like he does half the time.

Im wondering how Sam and Blaine are going to be able to pay Mercedes any rent that is actually cash. Sam isnt landing any modeling gigs that I assume pay well enough and Blaine doesn't have a job at all.

I haven't seen this weeks yet but I saw the promo for next weeks, it's the gay bashing episode, I hope RM and co handle such a big story well.

Eh. They handled Monteith/Finn's death well, but Shooting Stars... not so much.

Well Rachel didn't have any apparent job for like all of Season 4, so I'm pretty sure Glee just disregards details like that.

Rachels dads seemed like the type to support their daughter and pay for everything. Blaines might be the same or maybe his bro is giving him an unlimited allowance.

It was nice to see a new NYADA class, though I don't know why they dont just bring in NYADAs version of a glee club.

Actors/characters disappearing willy nilly on this show is really jarring. I know there are real-life reasons, like Cory Monteith's rehab stint, and Adam Lambert leaving now to go tour with Queen, Jayma Mays and Mike O'Malley having roles on other shows, etc., but it's really weird when we get scenes like Burt's medical appointment or Klaine's engagement or all those Glee Club rehearsals at the end of last season with Finn MIA when he totally would have been there for all those scenes. They could have taken two seconds to explain he was busy with finals or some BS, but they didn't even bother. It was like Finn ceased to exist quite a few episodes before his in-show death.

And the benefit concert in Season 2 that not even Burt, the most "regular" of the parents, could show up for?

And next episode, after showing us how BFF Kurt and Elliott are, Kurt's gonna get gay bashed and hospitalized and Elliott's not gonna be there when he totally would be in reality.

I know there are unavoidable behind-the-scenes issues where people can't be around all the time, but I think what makes it more jarring is the writers just let people cease to exist all the time without a word of explanation.

Joe and Sugar got sucked into a black hole. Never at any point in time did the writers bother with a two second throwaway line explaining where they went.

We got a big hospital scene of Kurt and Karofsky pledging to be friends, and then Karofsky was never seen or heard from again. Not even a two second throwaway comment from Kurt about how he's doing better, changed schools, moved away somewhere, etc.

I'm betting after building up Elliott's close friendship with Kurt, when Lambert leaves it will be as if he never existed and he'll never even be mentioned again either.

It's just lazy and really kind of jarring sometimes. They establish that these people are important to main characters on the show, and then they just vanish with no acknowledgment that they ever existed.

That is uber annoying. I mean they went out of their way to give Santana a new "gf" only to make it seem like Dani never existed when 100/ND came around.

Santana and Quinn disappeared after the thanksgiving episode even though the episode after it picked up right after it basically.

Santana and her abuela never got finished, Gloria wanted to do a whole storyline with that and of course I would be surprised if she ever came back.

Lauren Zizes and Jacob Israel disappeared like they were nobodies even though Jacob is suppose to return for a dream sequence now.

They really suck when it comes to anyone who isn't Kurt or Rachel in explaining sudden absences.

Watching the Say A Little Prayer For You performance again and I have no idea what they were thinking with those backing vocals that were suppose to be Brittany and Santana.

And it is amazing how introverted this show became throughout the years. Went from seeing them on the football field for Cheerio performances, football games, in the locker room, gym, to mainly in the choir room and auditorium.

The only place anyone can talk about anything is the auditorium.

Blaine wanted Burt's blessing to propose to Kurt? Better meet up in the auditorium!

That one was especially silly. Like, what, does Burt randomly hang around McKinley? And there were sets for both the Hummel home and at least Blaine's bedroom, but nope, a high school auditorium is the only place private enough for all these heart to hearts.

Aint that the truth.

I am surprised that we went through 4 nationals, sectionals, etc..without anyone interrupting the performance by taking over a song and it becoming about 1 upping each other.

Also feel like with ND coming to an end, they shouldve won Nationals in S2 so they could spend 2 years on top and making ND loss in S4 that much more dramatic

I think what made this weeks episode work was it had a tighter focus with a more concentrated set of characters, it allowed the ep to feel well structured.

Given the cut down number of episodes this season, I kind of wonder what season 6 will look like. Unless they pick up in a big way by the end of the season, I doubt they'd go back up to 22 episodes again.

Its just crazy that we heard of the episode cut, then it was confirmed that they are 22 again only for it to get cut again. If they werent hellbent on getting to the big 1000 (by my speculation) I think FOX would just cut the episode order down to 12.
