Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Collectible ticket from Regal. For a movie that has had fantastic posters across the board, somehow even castoff images like this are great.

Overall, an improvement over the first one. But this movie goes all in on Godzilla being the hero or good guy in case that bothers anyone.

He's basically Gamera now for the Legendary series.

Some of the dialogue is admittedly very hokey.

I've often said that the 2014 Godzilla tried to play him like Gamera or 70's Godzilla while using a gritty packaging of a more 1954 or 84 story. I imagine some consistency in aims might help.

I prefer a more amoral Godzilla who serves as a cautionary tale and a check against mankind's self-destructive and arrogant nature. He's a downright cuddly teddy bear here.

They just needed the special beeper to summon him to save the day. And Godzuki of course.

Heck I've even seen it suggested by fans that Gareth Edwards aped Gamera Guardian of the Universe but with less fights. I don't share that opinion though I acknowledge Godzilla 2014 shares some similarities.

He definitely did. This is after he basically lied and said this Godzilla was going to be like a natural disaster and mankind's punishment for its actions.

This movie pushes the Gamera angle even further.

Dougherty is at least a more competent director than Edwards and doesn't pull the cute teasing BS Edwards did five years ago.

I don't mind that Godzilla is the "babyface" of this continuity, but I admit I kind of like him the way you prefer too. I would've liked that he started out as the amoral "antagonist" in say the first film and by this installment, his priorities happen to align with them making him an anti-hero ally going forward similar to the late Heisei entries.

Thankfully Shin Godzilla satisfied my craving for the antagonist Godzilla, so I think I'm even more accepting of him being the good guy for KOTM.

Yes, basically they needed a monster to destroy other monsters and pray that Godzilla will leave them alone once he's done.

I feel like something shifted because that definitely sounded like what Edwards was talking about when he first started making the 2014 one.

Heisei is the ideal for me as far as Godzilla’s “morality”. The moment between him and Shindo in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah was pretty much perfect as far as Godzilla/Human interaction has gone.

Those were Gotti tweet campaign jokes

On one hand I'm glad the jokes worked. But I'm bummed that none of you got the reference.

lol you r/whoosh'd so many people, Blitz. I didn't even know what you were referencing yet I got that you weren't being serious. :funny:

Seeing KOTM later today. Expectations are somewhat tempered, but if the monster stuff is good, then that's all I need from this movie (yes, if the human stuff could've been better, that's obviously a detriment, but if it's not too distracting and those characters are serviceable at best, I don't mind).

I guess now the issue is who do you root for next year regarding Kong if they both seem pretty indifferent or cool with humanity.

I'd be cheering for logic, because the idea that Kong can battle Godzilla just seems incredible dumb at this point. :funny:

Perhaps random, or not with Kong being in this franchise and discussions of critics' and audience scores, I couldn't believe the 2005 King Kong only has a 50% rating among users. One of my favorite action/adventure movies.

When it comes to Kong, give me the original movie. No other Kong movie has really come close to it. Peter Jackson's movie was way, way, way too long and padded.

Too be fair, that is all I heard about BvS as well. That it looked just like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. :hehe:

In the case of B&R, I can see the so bad its good argument. But Superman IV was not even a finished film, so on that fact alone BvS is a better movie IMO. They actually bothered to complete it before putting it in theaters. Yeah, Superman IV has cheesy hilariousness and Reeve does his best with the awful script, but it's just not a professional film at all.

But yeah, there is no way that "That's a lot of fish!" is better than this movie. Just...no :o

Watts and Kong both make the 2005 film worth it's existence. Kong's first scene is so good imo, as is the dino fight. I just don't understand why so much time was spent on everyone else.
