But this was a different kind of satisfaction man. You know NYC and Boston... we hate each other’s guts lol.
I’m from Toronto and we also hate Boston (because of their sports teams/rivalry)

$179 million worldwide so far, from a $170 million budget. We can hope, can't we?

Right now, I think it really depends on how GvK goes. This is not a good number, but it's not a "burn everything and start from scratch" either. If the next one makes a healthier profit, they'll keep making them.

Kong vs. Godzilla will probably be the end of the Monsterverse which is fine by me. After he fights Ghidorah and Kong there is nothing left for him to do anyway. Unless WB can get the license for Gamera and have a Godzilla vs. Gamera showdown.

I think Legendary's agreement with Toho ends for Godzilla, Rodan etc after Godzilla/Kong. If the box office returns for GKOM is low they will probably let the license lapse.

Don't expect much legs for this movie. It's drop from its opening day take through the weekend was poor and it will probably have a big drop next weekend as well.
Re “nothing left for him to do”:
They spend a metric crap ton of this movie setting up Megalon. If I didn’t already know Kong was next I would have guessed that’s the next big bad.

And that's the problem. 5 years is way too long to wait for a sequel nowadays. Especially if a character isn't making any other apperances in team up films etc.
With the number of blockbusters coming out every month, you can't let the audience forget about you. And they will just due to the sheer bombardment of blockbusters. You have to be really really good to be able to take a 5 year break.

Nowadays I think it you have to make the sequel within 3 years or you're running a huge risk. After that you might as well wait some more time and do one of those long awaited sequels like Tron Legacy or something
Using this type of logic, Avatar2 is doomed to fail

$49 million for a franchise that opened with $93 million in 2014 is terrible. This film is a flop.

Saw it again. Still love it.

I will kind of laugh if Monsterverse becomes more Kong centric. I would still be up for it.

I can almost guarantee that Kong vs Godzilla will do better at the boxoffice than KoM

One would think considering there's no other real competition until Mulan comes out 2 weeks later. At the same time could franchise fatigue/indifference just settle in even further by next March and it grosses just as poorly?

Well, that's how some folks in this thread seem to be describing it as. :funny:

Today I saw screencap of one of the newspaper clipings in the end credits and possible spoilers I guess
but

the text mentions that Monarch is accused of developing a "mechanical giant" on Skull Island.

I could have done with more Mothra too...but I was glad every scene she was in was stunning.
what I really appreciated was that Mothra didn’t kill one human being. She purposely shot her silk shot at them even though they wanted to and were trying to kill her

Well, at least they shot Godzilla vs Kong already so King of the Monsters underperforming won't stop that one. We just probably won't be getting american budget versions of Mechagodzilla or Destroyah or anything else like that. Screw it, at least I got this one. I legitimately love this movie. I just don't judge Godzilla movies the same as other movies I guess. The nuttier the better imo. I was straight geeking out at some of the beautifully corny stuff they were doing and saying!

I'd actually be willing to put down money on Mechagodzilla being in the next movie, if only because MechaGodzilla was included in the same licensing deal that brought us Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra
