Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Dude... Charles Dance. The actor's name. He also plays Tywin Lannister on Game Of Thrones where the gif is from. Don't you recognize him as the same guy in the trailer that says "Long live the king"?

Ohhhh sorry! Yeah now I do. Thanks for the heads up mate.

Agreed. Also puts more meat on the bones of Monarch. Could be Dance is what Tom becomes after decades of working for the organization and then goes rogue?

It would certainly add some interesting context to him saying "Long live the King." (Ghidorah, Godzilla, or Kong?)

...

Actually, come to think of it, what if Hiddleston/Dance's character, after witnessing Goji vs the MUTOs, has come to believe that only Kong could serve as humanity's protector, and is releasing Ghidorah and the others in an attempt to get them to kill Godzilla and each other, then sic Kong on the last one standing, so that humanity doesn't have these gigantic terrors lurking over their shoulders for the rest of existence?

I really wanted Desplat to return, he totally nailed the Godzilla theme.

Fricking perfect, very memorable and had that old-school feel to it.

It'll be interesting to see if there's an opening title sequence as great as the first film's:

Yeahh a opening sequence about the old Cultures who write the cave paintings

I don't know... I could see the title sequence being a snap shot of the world post Godzilla's emergence into the world's consciousness after the 2014 film's events.

I think Bear McCreary is a good choice for KOTM.

I mean imagine him incorporating similar stuff to this when does the 'King Ghidorah' theme [YT]jPpITrjLllo[/YT]

On a side note, we already got news that McCreary will use the Ifukube 'Godzilla March' in some capacity and nao Daugherty also revealed that the composer will reuse themes for the other kaiju's

The biggest news to come from the panel is that Bear McCreary will be scoring the sequel, and Dougherty promises that he will be translating the classic theme from Godzilla, as well as other monsters’ themes, for this film.

The trailer track (Clair De Lune) has been released

This is absolutely amazing. It gets me every freaking time. This is such a wonderfully constructed piece of music. Great choice for the trailer.

I’m going to be pretty disappointed when they don’t use Clair de Lune in the Mothra scene. I’m sure what McCreary does will be good but the way it matches up in the trailer is just wonderful.

Yeah, he did the themes to Black Sails and Outlander so he's awesome in my book.

By far the best trailer released at SDCC.

So many amazing shots. Love the clip of Rodan flying & the force from his wings causes a 'sonic clap' (as mentioned in the Monarch case files) & levels the buildings below.

One question, (I'll spoiler just in case)

in the clip of DC with all the Tornado's - is that KG flying over head or Rodan?

Yeah, I do have to agree, this trailer had the best cinematography of any of the ones shown at Comic Con. Just stunning visuals.

Also, regarding the whole "Is Vera evil?" question... EW did and interview with her and the director and they both said that she wants to study the monsters because she believes that they hold some type of secrets to helping humanity (I guess in their DNA?). It doesn't sound like she actually wants to unleash them. Of course, it could all be a misdirect.

It's Rodan. You can see that the flying creature has only one head.

The doomsday storm that's engulfing DC is created by King Ghidorah so he is definitely somewhere close.

had no desire to watch a sequel to that awful first movie but dam that trailer sold me on this hopefully we get to see these creatures early on and not the last 10 mins this time

Yeah, the last Godzilla movies sucked. Talk about wasting a really good cast. NONE of the characters are any good. Aaron Taylor-Johnson's soldier character was boring and a bit of an idiot. Bryan Cranston had like 5 minutes of screentime. Elisabeth Olsen does nothing but talk on the phone. David Strathairn is just a generic military commander. KEn Watanabe just stands around looking scared. And I think Sally Hawkins had less lines than she had in The Shape of Water.

Oh, and even the action sequences weren't that good, because Edwards keeps cutting away from them whenever they start. Aside from the final battle, it was all pretty underwhelming. I hope this film fares better.

Honestly, I think I enjoyed the "Zilla" film from the 90s more. At least Matthew Broderick and Hank Azaria were fun to watch.

Jesus. That's quite a statement.

I liked the 2014 Godzilla but I can also admit that it got plenty boring in a lot of places. The fact that they kept cutting away from the fights pissed me off. That being said, I still love the design and sound of Godzilla. I can never get tired of that roar.

But I agree with you that the characters besides Cranston left a lot to be desired. But that's more of a Gareth Edwards thing because most of the characters in Rogue One were pretty bland too. I hope if anything, King of the Monsters takes a page out of Kong: Skull Island's book in making the characters a bit more lively but the real stars of this thing are the monsters. If the characters are meh again but we get some great kaiju action, I'll be just fine with that.

Haha, I knew that would get a reaction. Now, to be fair, I haven't seen Zilla since it was in theaters and maybe if I watched it today, I'd think it completely sucked. As a Godzilla movie, it totally fails but as just another giant monster movie, I enjoyed it. The only thing I remember hating about it was how it never stopped raining. It was like Emmerich watched "Seven" and was like, "That's just what a Godzilla movie needs!"

As for Edwards... I actually liked Rogue One a lot, and the characters in it. It had a big cast, and oftentimes that means that characters don't get a lot of development, but I still feel like the actors in that film were utilized much better than the Godzilla cast. But yeah, I liked the characters in Kong a lot and hopefully this film is more eminent of that than the last Godzilla movie. Because while the monsters are undoubtedly the stars, it certainly helps when the actors are utilized well. It's why (another Emmerich film) Independence Day is revered as a disaster movie classic and the Transformers films ****ing suck. You need to give a crap about the people with most (or all) of the dialogue. Shame that Emmerich pissed on his legacy by making Independence Day 2 and RUINING all of the good characters of the first one while simultaneously introducing new ones who would have been better suited to a Sharknado movie.

I saw Emmerich's Godzilla in theaters when I was 9 and I loved it then but watching it as I got older soured me on that one. But the fact that it never stopped raining in that movie was totally influenced by the first T-Rex scene in Jurassic Park. Not only that, but the baby Godzillas in the movie were basically just dumb Velociraptors. Roland Emmerich took way too much influence from Jurassic Park and virtually none from the Toho films. But hey, it was the '90s.

I liked Rogue One too, which I think is a better film than Godzilla 14 and I'd agree with you that the actors were utilized better in it, but I still didn't feel any real connection to the characters besides the Alan Tudyk droid and Donnie Yen's character. But at least nobody was wasted talent like Bryan Cranston or Sally Hawkins.

I really hope it's not a misdirect. Otherwise it would be a waste of what could amount to a really weighty arc for Brown, Farmiga and Chandler. Something honest god meaty on an emotional level to sink your teeth into in a big tent pole with ramifications for the characters on an emotional level. And those are the kind of performers that could pull that off.

I enjoy Godzilla 98. Don't particularly think Zilla is Godzilla in that movie (the animated series is a different story...), but I still enjoy it as a kaiju film.

Same I enjoy it for what it is. A dumb, fun, big summer, destruction and action type film. Just looking to turn my brain off when I watch that one. This new Godzilla is obviously the more serious tonally. More beautiful, fantastical and epic. More in line with what Godzilla is.
