Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

I was actually disappointed in the direction 2014 went in because I was looking forward to Godzilla being scary in that movie and being the bad guy/force of nature. I still liked the movie. But the marketing especially that teaser with the Oppenheimer quote had me frothing at a 1984 type of tone.

That Oppenheimer trailer was so great. Its so hard to find it online at least at a high res format.

They actually used shots from that concept trailer in the movie. No joke.

The actual movie did not deliver on the promise of that concept trailer. But I still enjoyed it.

The marketing for this was so good I think we were all really excited for something more than what it seems we are getting. At the very least an improvement over 2014.

IO9 liked the movie quite a bit, but they do say this is not the movie advertised. There is no message here, there is nothing more to say, just monsters running into each other, while the human plot rushes along, flimsy as hell and basically killing time until the monsters can start hitting each other again.

I dunno to me so far it sounds exactly like what I thought we’d be getting and basically what I wanna see. But that’s me.

Man, they were hitting us with the Evangelion style trailers. This movie doesn't seem to be that at all. :funny:

I think Daugherty went for the whimsical feel of the 60's-70's showa era and maybe it just didn't translate to modern audiences/critics that are unfamiliar with that whole feel. From a lot of the G fans who loved it I hear there's tons of easter eggs to the series. Maybe I'll get a kick out of all that.

I’m more so just talking about seeing all these creatures on the screen together and some big fights and destruction. That’s what I’m here for.
And that is more then fair. But that hasn't been what they have been advertising. They were selling a "film" as opposed to a big monster beat'em up.

What is weird is some reviews say there still wasn't enough of that. some say there's enough some say there's this, or that. For example Campea today (Who says overall he didn't like it) said a high % of the movie was the human stuff. which he hated and then 5 minutes of monster fights then back to long scenes of exposition etc...
