Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

I specifically mentioned movies that make long awaited sequels like Avatar 2 will be

But I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar 2 doesn't gross as much as the first one

At this point the lengthy of time between Avatar and Avatar 2 will be several years longer than between Revenge of the Sith and the Force Awakens, which is kind of nuts.

I mean if people didn't really show up for Godzilla and they didn't really show up for Kong. I don't think people will make it to the theater to see both of them. Or at least I wouldn't be surprised if they don't. I just don't think this franchise will be a huge hit. Especially after they started on shaky footing. I've liked all the films to some degree, but I think there might be ceiling for all these types of giant robot or kaiju movies.

Then again people didn't show up for JL but they showed up for Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

EDIT: And I see now this is opening 1 week after a Pixar film 2 weeks before a Disney Live action remake of Mulan, and 1 week before A Quiet Place 2. I mean I don't think A Quiet Place 2 will be that much trouble but Onward and Mulan for sure will

Freddy and Jason movies make a small amount of money on OW. When they did the Freddy VS Jason movie it had the largest opening for either franchise. The sum is greater than its parts. Godzilla vs King Kong is an Event film no matter how you cut it. There’s gonna be lots of clapping and cheering more than any of their solo films

I would definitely say there a ceiling and while the subject seems to almost require a massive budget, they maybe don't really justify being made on that level. Even adding hihr stars like the Rock hard seems to help. There's just a certain level of business that they tend to do.
Maybe KOM needed the Rock hard

Lmao.

The Rock’s narcissistic ass wouldn’t be in a Godzilla movie unless he got a scene where he gives Godzilla the People’s Elbow.

So... just to turn things around from the usual (but understandable) doomsaying in this thread, what are your guys' hopes for GvK and what would you like to see go down in it?
I want Godzilla to win and for the movie to make at least $100 million OW

The Rock isn't super narcissistic. He makes fun of himself all the time, and was one of the few WWE legends who was willing to put people over. He just knows people don't pay to watch him lose.

Well, at least they shot Godzilla vs Kong already so King of the Monsters underperforming won't stop that one. We just probably won't be getting american budget versions of Mechagodzilla or Destroyah or anything else like that. Screw it, at least I got this one. I legitimately love this movie. I just don't judge Godzilla movies the same as other movies I guess. The nuttier the better imo. I was straight geeking out at some of the beautifully corny stuff they were doing and saying!
When you say nuttier, what do you mean? Because something like Fury Road is pretty nutty imo, and that got over really well with critics and such.

I also don't care if this under preforms to a point. I mean, obviously I want them to make more of them in this series, but either way we're at least getting Godzilla vs Kong. There is always a shot that outperforms expectation and makes up for this one. But either way, I loved this movie. Under performing or not.

I think he is talking about things like mazer tanks, alien civilizations, ancient underwater civilizations, mecha monsters, human/godzilla/rose hybrids, that kind of thing.

So I just started Skull Island. Trying to get it done before the NBA Finals game tonight. My only real chance if i want to do it before trying to see Godzilla this week. Opening had me confused for a second. :hehe:

Amen! I don’t judge slasher films the same way as indie films so I don’t get why Godzilla movies have to be Citizen Kane or the Godfather part 2.

Even nowadays Toho doesn't really take them that serious as cautionary tales, it's more just fun.

Agreed. Godzilla vs Kong was always the endgame. Godzilla Vs Pacific Rim although I would seriously nerdgasm is a pipe dream

I wouldn’t mind seeing the aliens in these films, though hopefully with more of a horror spin than the usual depiction they’ve received in previous iterations.
It should be some HP Lovecraft like stuff. I mean its all there to be done.

So looks like this movie’s a bit of a garbage fire, then? Shame. I’ll wait for it to stream I think.

This movie was just... absolutely beautiful. I was hooked at every scene, seriously. The action was just intense, far superior to the first film. It was so chaotic but you could make out everything quite well. Not to mention the choreography between the monsters, it was vicious.

And I'll be honest, there were a few moments where I got emotional, not gonna lie here, I did. Both with humans and the monsters. They got me good.

This was a 10/10 for me. Thank you Michael Dougherty, thank you.

I am sad though the film won't be making much money, I feel maybe they should have kept it in March. But at least Godzilla vs Kong is already underway so there's no stopping it.

It seems rather split. And in the MoS way, more so then the BvS way.

For those who have seen all three now, I am watching Kong right now and it ain't great, but I am genuinely enjoying it. Would you say this film has more in common with 2014 or Skull Island?

Definitely Skull Island. I mean, visually, it isn't quite as clear as Skull Island, but it is more along cheesy fun.

Garbage fire? The first Godzilla was a garbage fire to me. This was a fun adventure film with massive spectacles and some heart.

Probably Skull Island but it has my favorite attributes of both films in it. The darker overall visual style of 2014 but the beautiful use of color and insane amount of monster fights like in Skull Island. But I feel like the monsters have more character to them in King of the Monsters over skull island and are more memorable. Doesn't hurt that they're all legends already.

I still like Godzilla 2014. I enjoyed those teases, but i definitely prefer King of the Monsters.
