Sci-Fi Godzilla Minus One

Vile's opinion counts for a lot on here and that makes me really excited.

Anything else you can say about it without delving into spoilers?

Yes. Shin Godzilla was basically a political satire. This movie is a post-WWII drama mixed with a disaster feature. Shin Godzilla was great IMO, but this movie eschews the political satire and goes back to a post-war setting. It uses Godzilla to explore post-war trauma and damage.

It feels like a much more genuine, purer take on Godzilla than anything in recent memory.

The main characters are all great. Like it actually gets the emotional part down and you actually care about the human characters in a Godzilla movie in the first time in a long time.

Also, we do hear the classic theme. In the MonsterVERSE, only Bear McCreary was smart enough to realize that no Godzilla movie should go without the classic theme. The music in Godzilla vs. Kong sucked. The music in this movie is beautiful.

There are a couple far-fetched elements in it, but I'll talk more about that after the movie comes out.

This movie was 9/10 borderline 9.5/10 for me.

Vile, would you say that, given some of our past conversations, that this is definitey the type of movie Godzilla 2014 should have been given its earlier promotional material?

HELL. YES.

This is what i've wanted from a Godzilla movie for a very, VERY, long time. Sure, i love it when the big G fights monsters and Shin's take was great but THIS, man, this is that **** right there.

Any ideas if the Dec15 release in the UK is nationwide or select cinemas?

*me still waiting for a release announcement in my country even though it'll most likely never come*

I'm with you here.
The movie will be released here in France...for only two days and on only about fifty screens... Heh.

No release date yet in Mexico (for theatrical release). Shin took a few years to arrive. :sadcat:

At least it will be released on here. I'll be lucky if Portugal even gets that treatment (spoiler: 99.5% sure it won't be released here).

I don't know how this will be received, but I hope it's the start of something for TOHO International. I hope this means we can see more things like this getting theatrical releases in the US.

I've noticed a bit in the last couple of years that a lot of Japanese Production companies (Toho, Toei, Tsuburaya etc) are starting to release things internationally A LOT faster than in previous years. I think they're starting to realize the power of the international box office market.

IMHO they should. Look at Demon Slayer. That made $49 million domestically and $453 million worldwide. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero also did well here and abroad.

1000% agree. They should have been pushing for faster releases years ago. But its nice to see progress. Only having to wait a month from the Japanese Release to the English Release is actually really great. 10x than it takes for US movies to make it over to Japan.

Saw it tonight. It might be my favorite film of 2023. It was pretty much perfect. Exactly the way a serious Godzilla film should be and definitely the best one I’ve seen. The actors, characters and story were all excellent. It felt so gritty and realistic at times that it almost feels like it could have been a follow-up to Oppenheimer if Godzilla was a real thing. And Big G was straight-up terrifying. There are no attempts in this film to make him the “good guy,” and I think that’s for the best. He’s much better when he’s just a destructive force of nature. I think I still prefer Legendary’s design for Godzilla over this one but that’s not a big deal; this movie was still much better than anything we’ve gotten from the MonsterVerse (the Monarch show is a close second though; absolutely loving that).
