Sci-Fi Godzilla Minus One

It’s so funny telling friends of mine who aren’t kaiju/sci-fi fans about this movie. I’m always like, “So… I think I saw my favorite movie of the year recently. You’re not going to believe me when I tell you what it is. But just hear me out.”

A bit of a misleading headline, but yeah it's doing well.

Just got out of the film with my friend and it was horrifying, emotional and just awesome! The characters, writing, direction, VFX, sound were really well done!

Man, that score was also rocking, especially when the iconic theme showed up repeatedly in the film!

It also made me jump quite a few times as well, but I get easily startled, lol

Legendary’s iteration has got nothing on this, which I still really enjoy!

9/10

I've seen this thrice as of last night. Best film of the year; no question, even more so than Oppenheimer and Barbie.

I also love that the film is blowing Hollywood out of the water in terms of general buzz.

Looks like GMO has cracked $30 million in the US and $60 million worldwide
Estimated $4.88m domestic this weekend for a total of $34,257,586. WW is $64,091,290.

If it can hold a decent number of theaters through the holiday season I can see over $50m domestic.
I finally saw it this weekend and loved it. I was going to see it 2 weeks ago, but it just hammered rain and last week I had other plans.
It definitely looks like it should have cost more than $15m and if this was made in Hollywood you could probably add another 0 on to the number.
I've read the arguments that pay and working conditions for VFX artists are abysmal, but I can pretty much guarantee the headline actors, the director and executive producers didn't make the 7 or even 8 figure paychecks like they would in a big Hollywood movie.
I'd love to see the numbers for the Japanese counterparts for this movie.
Hell, if an A lister was cast in the lead role in a Hollywood version it might cost more than the entire budget of this movie.

I get the impression that film isn't very profitable for directors and actors.

from i heard even the biggest stars in Japan don't make more than 10 million yen (around 70 thousand USD) per movie.

This, and they can do it themselves without a US distribution partner. IE Sony handled the US release of Godzilla 2000 23 years ago.
Or they can just buy into a company with global distribution expertise, which appears to be what they did earlier this month.

Just came out of this, really really good movie with a good story and emotional core. I would have liked just one more scene of the Big G himself as he is missing for large parts, but he certainly makes his mark when he does appear that's for sure.

And while I saw that ending coming, the way they filmed and presented it meant it still had maximum impact. Like a few others, a Godzilla movie brought tears to my eyes.

8.5/10

Best Godzilla movie since the original.

My literal only complaint is that I think Godzilla's design is only a 9/10 instead of a perfect 10. Wish he looked more charred and his head was a little more disfigured.

That's literally it. 9.5/10.

Interesting, I had the exact opposite reaction. Minus One G reminded me how important the keloid scar skin texture is to Godzilla's overall aesthetic and makes the Legendary Goji look really off in comparison.

Oh yeah no, as I said, Minus One is still a 9/10 design wise. I just think for the movie he's a part of, he looks a little too...clean? That's the only way to describe it. It's more in the face more than anything, it looks to me too much like he's a naturally evolved being than something which has been disfigured into an abomination via the radiation of an atomic bomb. His general skin texture I think works perfectly fine, I just wish his face was a little less symmetrical and uniform. More ugly. Especially for a movie such as this, where Godzilla's once again this symbol of the atomic bomb's destruction.

I think Minus One would be genuinely perfect for a Godzilla vs X movie. I just think for the more "1954" category movies, where Godzilla serves as this bringer of destruction and arbiter of Japan's outcry of what the atomic bomb did to them that a far more disfigured look to him works even better. 1954 and Shin Godzilla being the two very obvious icons of this style of Godzilla film

There's only so much I can add but for the most part I really loved this movie. A tiny part of me was a little skeptical that it wouldn't be able to live up to all the hype but thankfully I was super wrong about that.

It's just a masterpiece in filmmaking IMO from the score, the sound design, the great special effects and most importantly of all the writing which really stood out to me in this movie.

The human drama was fantastic, and I even found myself getting a little teary eyed at certain points, especially towards the end and man what a great, satisfying payoff this movie has at the end.

Godzilla definitely didn't disappoint either and honestly a lot of his scenes were very reminiscent of classic Spielberg era stuff like Jaws and Jurassic Park which I thought was the perfect tone for this.

I loved how sudden, terrifying and atmospheric his intro was.

10/10
