Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

I'm pretty sure King of the Monsters established Godzilla can sense Alpha Titans or whatever to help justify how Godzilla could keep finding Ghidorah across the world.

I thought it was dumb and was kinda lazy in that one, but in this one it doesn't even make sense because Kong has just been chilling on his own for years and Godzilla hasn't really given a damn :funny:

Also first they hyped up Godzilla and Ghidorah having an “ancient rivalry” and now apparently Godzilla and Kong had one too.

Much appreciated on the explanation but i gotta admit even your explanation sounds so out there.

Also guys, didnt this movie feel like it threw you right into the middle of its act II from the very beginning? Right in the first 5 minutes we have characters spouting exposition saying “Kong cant leave or Godzilla will get him,” and i had to do a spit take like “wait what, since when did we establish all this??” :funny:

Hey it doesn't have to not be, as long as it makes sense and is functional. The fact it's willing to just go full tilt is part of its charm. It's not some portentous God vs God film that takes itself too seriously. It reminded me of an anime, akin to what Pacific Rim was doing even though I enjoyed this more.

The one that really got me was the totally throwaway line "when the storm wiped out all the natives [on Skull Island]." Like, what?!? What storm??! Those people had been there since ancient times! They can survive storms! The island looks fine! What?!?! :funny:

So if Kong is really from Hollow Earth, did they ever explain how he ended up on Skull Island? Also, is Hollow Earth basically the earth’s core? When they were following Kong to it, it looked like they went through a worm hole. I didn’t understand the whole movie “science” behind it.

My impression was the perpetual storm that had protected the island had engulfed the island, with catastrophic results. Too bad. Guess we need a new monster island.

That is undoubtedly reshoots/ADR put in there in post after Wingard realized the film needed to be trimmed down, I’m betting.

Also, this is mostly explained during the end credits of KotM basically, lol. That's right, end credits, not even an end credits scene. :funny: They showed headlines of the other Titans converging on Skull Island, so presumably Godzilla is aware of Kong as his rival Alpha before this movie starts.

There's a longer Cut out there but WB probably wanted all the human scenes trimmed down, probably after test audience feed back.

Guys, its fairly clear what the majority of what was cut was. I highly doubt they shot anything for Jia's backstory.

I mean, Wingard says theres not. Amazingly, some directors understand the need for cuts. I'm not entirely sure adding a third human story for Monarch really adds much to the movie. I mean, Monarch was what dragged KOTM down.

I think that is what set the human stories in this movie from KOTM, and also a factor in how well it did with critics. Monarch in KOTM did little more than expout exposition upon exposition, with the occaisional one liner.

Look, I really dislike what they did with Maddie's character in this story. Which to be fair to the movie, it was made before conspiracy theorists reached the current unfunny-est level. But, she actually did stuff in her part of the story. Same with team Kong. They were not just following the monsters giving exposition dumps.

What the... I feel like those End Credits established so much random important crap that we should probably be told in the actual films :funny:

I honestly wouldn't have known that and was equally confused by the line. Granted the whole opening scene got me when they established Kong was in containment. Like how and when did you guys do that?

There were likely more scenes with Kyle Chandler and Lance Reddick.

Also, let's be honest. Some of what Wingard is saying could just be him playing ball and understanding the game better than others and being diplomatic. Though I'm sure due to the reception the movie is getting he's more confident making these comments.

Personally, I couldn't stand the Bernie Hayes character and subplot. I couldn't buy into the idea at all that this guy worked for Apex for five years and did a publicly known podcast for five years whistle blowing on his own employer without anyone catching onto it.

I am surprised critics havent been more...critical of the film's script but it really is nonsensical. I was so lost for the first half of the movie ...in fact I still dont think I understand the whole "Bring Kong to middle earth" section of the movie. I still have so many questions. :funny:

I'm surprised more because critics trashed Godzilla: King of the Monsters and were lukewarm to it. I don't get what was worse about King of the Monsters. I genuinely don't.

Fair enough. To each their own. I thought this was nothing like Pacific Rim Uprising, that movie was total garbage in story, visuals and action. I can understand some of the weight and movement complaints but I felt Wingard put real effort behind this to make the battles feel epic and powerful unlike whatever the Hell we got in Uprising.
Yeah, ultimately it’s all subjective. You like what you like and nobody can bring down your enjoyment of it . Though Uprising was definitely more of a disappointment than this. Partly because they totally got rid of del Toro’s atmosphere and partly because of what they did to Mako :csad:.

Btw did the opening credits imply that all the other titans have been killed in battle with each other? It said “defeated” so technically some could still be alive but still... that’s kinda sad. I don’t know what are the odds of seeing another entry into the Monsterverse but I would’ve liked for them to make more appearances in this franchise.

I thought it only showed “defeated” over the MUTOS, the King Skullcrawler, And Ghidorah.

This movie sucked. Sure there was battle sequences which were good but the human characters were pitifully disappointing. What the hell was the point of having the Russells appear again in this film? They could have simply had a cameo and nothing would have been missed. The screentime of Eleven's adventures cut into the screentime for both Skaragard and others plus the supposed billionaire villain. His daughter was on screen for what 6 mins and then went villain and got killed immediately after...were we suppose to care?

There was this tournament bracket thingie that led up to Godzilla on one end and Kong on the other. They showed those guys in close-ups but I noticed Rodan, Scylla and Behemoth in the back. And there were a bunch more that all said “defeated”.

I really think that this film became Kongcentric after the box office performance of King of the monsters which is fine, but if you are going to do that at least have some respect for him and don’t treat him like a secondary character to Godzilla. I think that was just garbage! Every commercial and trailer for this film centers on Kong but yet
He can’t even get a draw or one clear round ?
He has been on skull island without any worry yet in this film
He is in containment for fear of Godzilla
I think that was just wrong! They should have just featured Godzilla heavily on the trailer and been done with it !

I really wish this film would have stuck with Vogt-Robert’s! He told a coherent story and still managed to nail the creature fights. Here I was just disheartened by what they did with Kong, but still thought it was a solid Godzilla film. I don’t see how any fan of Godzilla could be disappointed. He really looked at his best here then throughout any film in the monster verse including King of the monsters.

I also get the monster moving without sense of weight, and truly that only applies to Godzilla. Kong has been nimble and fast in every movie he has been in and I felt Godzilla was sped up just to keep pace with Kong, which looked unnatural but was very necessary otherwise he would have been just a slow moving target. It’s no different than Kong needing the ax otherwise he would have been roasted . So all in all good film, but total mischaracterization of Kong. It seemed like he was going for Jackson’s Kong, but landed on George from Rampage.

The storm engulfed the island, we even see it in this film at the beginning.

Yes!! Me too. From the very opening minutes I felt so thrown off. It definitely was not how i was expecting them to introduce Kong into this movie. I mean look, I got over it once we steered into act II, but act I of this movie was an absolute mess and reeks of rewrites and reshoots.

I’ve watched this film twice and have never seen a storm engulfing the island. I just saw
Kong scratching his butt and lounging in containment hiding from Godzilla I guess smh[ SPOILER]

Truthfully, I don’t have nearly as much interest in seeing the film as I do in hearing its box office performance, and so far so good. Its doing fairly impressive numbers despite the fact that theaters are still open in lower capacity but I always knew once LA & New York theaters re-opened that would help with the BO intake. Not to mention, unlike most of last year, we have a vaccine & the number of vaccinations are rapidly going up.

Now comes time for it to answer the next part of the box office question: how well will this film do in repeat viewings, especially when one(in the US) has the alternative to see the movie at home for at least a month?

<--- most realistic and most serious | least realistic and least serious --->
<--- Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) --->

The approach and tone of Godzilla (2014) and GvK are like polar opposites but I feel like they got the balance better with G:KotM and K:SI. They do seem to want these Kong-centric movies to be a bit lighter, even in something like Vogt-Roberts' K:SI despite the few tense moments and horror aspects it's like answering the question of 'What if Sam Raimi directed Jurassic Park (1993)?'. GvK took it to a real extreme though beyond K:SI.
