Well the one Kong squished wasn't.
I rewatched Skull Island Sunday evening - I haven't seen it in some time and most of my reflection was from the other Kong film with Adrian Broody. In any case, and I didn't think I'd ever say this but I'm not so sure about Godzilla easily taking the victory now. I suppose part of it is my error in comparing the Kong of the 2005 film to the Kong of Skull Island (and the one that'll feature in Kong vs Godzilla).
Kong is quite large in Skull Island, sure, he's not sizeable to Zilla here, but this film is set some 45-50 years before he's going to come face to face with Godzilla, and that's plenty of time for him to grow. Godzilla is going to be slower than Kong in everything it/he does, Kong will have the speed advantage, and possibly the intelligence. Kong isn't a quitter either, not to say that Godzilla is, it's just we've seen Kong protect, whereas we've only seen Godzilla defend; there's a difference here.
If Zilla can get that flamethrower off, I think Kong would suffer; it's blue fire, which is one hell of a lot hotter than normal fire (not something Kong would easily just shake off) but Zilla is going to need to focus that, and Kong, I think, is quick enough to get out of the way, or deflect it if close up. I still hold the thought that Zilla is more durable (reptiles generally are) but I do start to question whether Kong's speed resilience may give him the advantage here.
Sorry for jumping sides too (heh), but I'd urge everyone to watch both films (Skull Island and Godzilla) again, take into account what happens on both films and who (or what?) the antagonist creatures are, and then take into account how much Kong could grow in 50 years.
I certainly don't think it'll be as clear cut as one easily defeats the other, but I'm definitely more open now that Kong could come away the victor. The open-ended question would be why the victor wouldn't kill the other. Presumably (I'm guessing) one would
win, only for another threat to emerge and they band together to defeat said threat.
