I really know nothing about the series before IV, but I had no idea that the three cities you play in in the original GTA were Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. I really thought that all started in the GTA III verse.

Yes, but they're very different in the later games.

If you haven't played San Andreas, let me clarify, in that game you had an insane number of cheats. You could make cars fly, turn invincible, invisible, you can spawn virtually any vehicle (including a jet fighter and a jet pack)... punch people into the sky (and cars)... Arm civilians, make them riot...

Pretty crazy. **** loads of fun. Keep in mind that San Andreas is immense. Three huge cities, and nearly as much open space (national parks, mountains, rural towns, deserts, Area 51, etc).

Man I still have my GTAI and GTAII some where down in storage, I should go look for them and pop them in my PC lol. Have a marathon and see if I can get through all six games.

I still have all the main GTA games (I, II, London, III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV). I still haven't finish III yet. lol

Really? Man GTA III took over my life for a while. I remember I got it the day it came out, and after a week or two people started hearing about it and a bunch of friends of mine would come over just to watch me play. They would watch for like 20 minutes, then run to the store to try and get a copy.

Does anyone remember how the first GTA ended? Played that game to death, but haven't gone back to it in years (I still have my disc AND the map it came with!). I can't for the life of me remember what happened at the end of the story though.

Anybody tried completing the old games using the permanent riot cheat from the beginning? lol

Yeah I couldn't get pass this one mission (I think I was half way done with the story) and said f*** it. Then Vice City was released and I was addicted to it, I finished the main story and everything else you have to complete in less than a month. Same with San Andreas, I finished that one in no time.

I couldn't get past the mission where you have to protect Grove Street from the Ballards. Too many old ladies got me lol

They really need to re-release Those first three GTA's (III, VC, SA) on PS3. It'd be a great Christmas if they would have announced that. Then V next year.

GTA III is 9.99 on PSN right now. I bought it for the hell of it and had a blast. They've already confirmed that SA and VC will be released, most likely by the end of the year on PSN as well.

I didn't get into the series until Vice City. I owned an xbox and my cousin had a PS2. I would go over his house every day and play and try to beat Vice City and San Andreas with him. Actually, I never owned a GTA game until IV.

By the way, I want the all cars explode and pedestrians riot (with weapons) cheats back!

I first played the original on PC, my cousin showed it to me, and it was a fun arcade type romp, and he bought me the second one for my birthday. I liked the games, but did not "love" them. Then GTA III came out and changed it all.

Then with all the hype/reviews I bought GTAIII the day it came out, and all the others since. I had GTAIII, VC, SA, and IV all on PS2 or PS3.

I never beat GTA III. I think I got as far as the last mission and never defeated it. When I came back to it years later, my save was erased. It took me years to beat VC as well

I just picked up GTA III from the Google Play Store this past week for 99 cents. Haven't been able to check it out though since apparently it will just freeze up on my phone... which is due to be replaced very, very soon.

I first discovered the GTA series with San Andreas. I picked it up as a rental after loving Spiderman 2 and was blown away by the quality of the work put into it. I had to make myself stop playing it early on to go back and play GTA III. I knew if I kept going there was no way I was going to be able to go backwards and play the game that started it all first. For one, I hated the camera control in GTA III, which they fixed in San Andreas. So I bought the double-pack GTA III/Vice City and did it. It's the only GTA game I have played through to the end other than playing through "The Ballad of Gay Tony" a few months ago. It's also the only game that I bothered using cheats to play the story mode. That last mission was ridiculously hellish and rather sadistic on the developer's part. I just got to the point where I didn't care and just wanted to pass that mission to see what happened.

The rest of the GTAs I always seem to make it 3/4s of the way through and then just drop out. Missions that are too hard and long-winded don't go over well. I don't want to f**k up then be forced to start over and drive across the map again. They've been improving their in-game save points so hopefully I'll finish V. I will definitely be in line on the eve of release at midnight.

Did anybody else like switching to the overhead view? I always thought that mode looked the best as far as making the city look more real while at the same time reminding of old arcade or Atari console driving games with a similar view

IV was my first GTA. I have to be honest, I always saw it as kind of a low brow series beforehand. I thought the main fun ppl got out of it was running over hookers, and randomly shooting into crowds mindlessly. IV showed me I was wrong, not to say plenty of of ppl don't enjoy it for the above, but I had a lot of fun with IV.

I've never really felt compelled to play the older entries though. I have $10 left in my PSN wallet after getting LBP 2 this week, GTA 3 is $9.99, but I don't feel the urge to buy it. I'd rather pop in IV again honestly. I think it's because I look at GTA more as a real life sim where I can do whatever I want in a realisitic setting, that I couldn't do in real life. The story, while mostly good, probably came in as a second most of the time. I spent much more time cruising around, and getting in trouble.

I hope they don't add more "save points" throughout. Too many games are simplified down and really just "watered down" down because some don't have the patience to try again. That is one thing I really hope they don't do.

The GTA series has needed mission check points for years though. It took until The Balad of Gay Tony for Rockstar to catch on, and it's a step in the right direction. Failing an enormously difficult mission right near the end, and then having to drive from one side of the map to the other is really frustrating and in modern games, totally pointless.

Yes if it is just "getting" to the mission itself, that's fine. But still a mission is a mission, creating checkpoints, just takes away from the challenge, as many games continue to do. It's not pointless if it is part of the challenge.

I don't know. Even then, if it's a long mission I sure don't feel like repeating large chunks of it that I've just completed successfully so I can get back to where I was. Luckily the checkpoints are optional of course, you can always choose to go back to your last save point and start again. They're just there for the people who want them.
