Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

Yeah maybe DC should stop making comic books as well.:whatever: DC/WB can't just fold because of a few bad films . Marvel had plenty of disasterious films in the past . And the higest grossing superhero film is still a dc product . Green Lantern was a fiasco but really so was the first Captain America film.

To just stop making these films would also hurt their comic sales against marvel as well . There is always hope

Excuse me, but are you seriously comparing GL to the first Cap movie? Do you know the budget discrepency between the two movies, not to mention the ubiquitous marketing that had gone into GL (and costs $100 mil plus) compare to that shoddy of a film that most people don't even knew existed.

Mind numbing isn't it?

I remember when Hulk was a fiasco and Universal said was moving ahead with a sequel again with Eric Bana. Then: The Incredible Hulk, reboot, with Edward Norton.

I remember when Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was a fiasco and Fox said was moving ahead with a third movie. Then: announced reboot.

I remember when Superman Returns was a "soft" success and WB said was moving ahead with a sequel again with Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer as director. Then: Man of Steel, reboot, with Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder as the director.

I remember when Punisher was a fiasco and Lionsgate said was moving ahead with a sequel again with Tom Jane. Then: Punisher War Zone, reboot, with Ray Stevenson.

It's everytime the same story. Only time will prove if i'm wrong.

The screen edition of the DC comics superhero generated $7.1 million on the weekend at 2,900 screens in 16 markets, bringing its overseas gross total over two rounds to 29.4 million.
It's not even at 120M WW...

I literally LOL'd when i saw the comparison between GL and the captain america movie in the 90's that was, i think, direct to video, I mean seriously?

Yes, let us remind ourselves that GL was also better than Elektra. :whatever:

Honestly, all this talk about budgets doesn't really mean jack, because the studio can say the budget is whatever they want to say it is. Fox said the budget of Dragonball Evolution was $100 million and it was actually $25 million, and then they also said that the budget on Avatar was $250 million when rumor has it that it was close to $400 million. Figuring out the marketing budget is on a movie is a crapshoot because the studios never talk about that, so any figures you hear are almost always hearsay.

Devin Faraci has a pretty good analysis on this.

Badass Digest: Why Warner Bros Is Saying They’re Making A GREEN LANTERN Sequel

As for the comparisons to Superman Returns, I don't think they can be really compared the same way. I think if Superman didn't have a lingering love triangle and a son, we all would have seen a sequel to Superman Returns. Green Lantern doesn't really have much baggage, so I think there is more potential for a sequel.

Not only that, but Superman Returns was released during an economic high. We're having a bad decline right now and the box office this year hasn't been very impressive overall. Not to resort to a pun, but it's possible that Warner Bros. are hoping that greener pastures lie ahead in terms of the amount of money people are able to spend at the movies. If not, we're probably going to be seeing fewer blockbusters released each year.

You know, aside from using a full movie of Sinestro or his Corps for a sequel... the Manhunters would be another good intergalactic GL yarn.

Come on!

The downturn didn't hurt Thor or Pirates - which was an awful film. Or Cars which outperformed expectations.

These reports are not confirmed. More like rumors.

If anything WB is trying to bolster international performance of GL, which doesn't seem to be working, and to save the DVD sales.

This film cost around 300 million to make and market. Right now it appears the WW box will come in at a little north of 300 million. Underperfoming the dismal SR by about 100 million.

Sequel? No way IMO.

Reboot - possible but not in the immediste future. JL proabaly moves to the front of the line for 2014 or 2015. A rebooted GL could follow a few years later. Or not, maybe they will try Flash or Aquaman.

What's the final tally for the weekend? Did it break $90 mil domestic at least?

How do you figure $300 million worldwide?

It's not going to happen.

They said they were going to do this after Superman Returns, that never happened. The next time we will see GL is in a JL film. WB isn't going to take a risk like this again. This film didn't even get to 100 million yet after 2 weekends. Not good at all.

Look at something like Transformers 2, a film that was maybe 10 times worse than GL, yet it still had legs despite the terrible terrible reviews because it had awesome robot battles that drew the audience in. GL just didn't click with the regular movie goer. GL will struggle to get to 125 domestic.

WB might use this as a marketing ploy to lure people to the cinemas so they go see the first Lantern but this sequel aint happening.

Dont be surprised if we find out in this sequel The Guardians are now humans from the future

Actually does, most of the time they release the correct amount for the budget.

This film isn't going to make a profit during it's theater run, WB would be fortunate to break even after blu-ray/dvd sales, merchandise etc.

Film industries nowadays want to see a profit during the theater run, why do you think we always get romatic comedies with a budget of 25-50 million?

Well to be fair to GL, it hasn't opened up in most major markets overseas.

I see around 300 million WW.

Actually, it already opened in the Int release areas known to bring in the larger BO gross (UK, Ireland, Russia, India, Canada, Hong Kong, etc.) Only ones left are:

Estonia 29 July 2011
Spain 29 July 2011
Sweden 29 July 2011
Australia 4 August 2011
Netherlands 4 August 2011
Finland 5 August 2011
Norway 5 August 2011
France 10 August 2011
Argentina 11 August 2011
Hungary 11 August 2011
Portugal 18 August 2011
Brazil 19 August 2011
Colombia 19 August 2011
Paraguay 19 August 2011
Turkey 26 August 2011
Italy 31 August 2011
Bulgaria 2 September 2011

With funny math.

Supposedly WB is looking for 325 WW. It's been posted on some of these threads.

It won't get that.

Being generous 130 million US and 170 million outside the US. These films usually pull in a bit more overseas.

But it could come in at less than 300 million WW.

Where else is it going to pull major money from overseas?
