Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

general public doesnt care about critics and reviews. if a movie gets bad reviews and is liked by the masses it will make money. and the other way around. good reviews and BO bomb.

Does this mean no WB comic film in 2013?

I gotta think the studio after this will not give the go-ahead to a Flash or WW movie in the time it needs to be up and running for 2013.

Can they get a JL ready for 2013? I actually think that will be their main push along with rebooting batman after Nolan finishes up his last Bats film.

But getting a JL out by 2013 may be a tall order.

I think all the bad reviews did was confirm people's doubts that the film was good and as a result they stayed away. As for 2013 , I think it will be a blessing if there's only one or two comic book flicks. The market is pretty saturated with these kind of films and think you need to give the audience a bit of a break and build anticipation for these flicks as opposed to having one released every other month. 2012 is gonna have TDKR, MOS, ASM, Avengers, and Wolverine 2. I have a feeling one or a couple of these may not meet box office expectations much like GL given the crowded market.

In unrelated news, WB has announced that they will split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 into 3 parts.

Part 2, Part 1 will come out this summer, while Part 2, Parts 2 & 3 will be in 2012 and 2013.

To do a JL film before Flash or Wonder Woman would be the absolute worst choice that wb could do . . They shouldn't panic over one film .

It'd be foolish to rush another film out just because Marvel will have several comic films in 2013 and WB doesn't want to be left behind.

The studio really needs to sit back and bring in someone new to take a look at what hasn't worked and why with their comic films - Batman excepted.

Does WB even need to make comic-book films on a regular basis Like every year? Maybe not. Marvel has taken that niche and for WB to try to compete seems like a hopeless cause.

I'm sorry , but I just can't stand this generalization. Marvel Studios has only released four films (five when Cap comes out). Fox and Sony have released a ton of crappy films about MArvel characters but it's not MArvel's fault they turned out that way. None of the campy Cap, Spidey or FF films from the 90s were Marvel's doing either.

Green Lantern was the first movie to be released under the WB/DCE banner, and THAT is what worries me. Think of it this way: If Iron Man had bombed like GL back in 2008 then Marvel Studios would have been **** out of luck. Expect WB to begin damage control by distancing themselves from the DCE banner asap.

Yeah, a lot of mainstream folks thought this character was dumb when they saw the billboards and trailers. If the movie had actually been Ironman level quality it may have swayed some to check it out.
Everyone knows embargoes usually means their worried about the quality of the movie, or its greatness depends on keeping a lid on a huge plot twist.

And then some movies get great reviews but no one goes to see them. Iron Giant, Office Space, Rocky Horror, Let me In etc.

I doesn't matter what general audiences think in this aspect, you're talking about a studio 'giving up' producing superhero films on their own accord. WB provided the funding for DCE to create GL, DCE dropped the ball. WB will take measures to make sure they won't loose the same money again

It was nowhere near as bad as GL, and GL isn't as bad as the critics made it seem. Guess you've got high standards, surprised to see you here.

I see your point, but at the same time, I got to say if a film gets nearly universal bad reviews which Green Lantern did then it might discourage the casual moviegoer. That's where word of mouth has to come in and counter that and even from what I've read across the internet, most of it that I've seen has been mixed for the most part, not a lot of ringing endorsements.

I mean, there are films that are reviled by critics like Transformers, however the Transformers franchise already had more general audience popularity going in than Green Lantern did. Also, despite the lack of quality, those films deliver on big action. Bay understands how to put on a spectacle, in a way that GL didn't quite grasp, in comparison.

It's really a tricky thing, which films connect and why they do. I mean, Robin Hood last year underperformed despite having Russell Crowe, nearly universal name recognition for the character, and I would say decent reviews. So just having name recognition or good/decent reviews doesn't stop some films from not doing well either, or generating interest.

Obviously your opinion cannot be detested, if that's how you feel I can understand that.

The only thing I'll add is that, if Iron Man 2 was nothing more than a marketing tool for The Avengers then the Green Lantern movie was nothing more than a marketing tool to sell Green Lantern toys. I'll take a segway film over a 1 hour and 45 minute toy commercial any day.

I think the audience's perception of this movie was that it was overproduced. Most people are unfamiliar with Green Lantern, and yet the advertizing blitzkrieg WB put out was comparable to the kind that you see with established franchises like Spider-Man and Transformers. I think that when people see that big of a marketing push, they get suspicious about the quality of the actual product, because a huge marketing push can be a red flag that the studio spent too much on the movie and they are desperate to make it back. Instead of relying on getting the fundamentals right and letting the movie sell itself, they took a weak script and threw tons of money at it, and that rarely results in a good movie. If there is a next time, Warner Bros. should make sure they have a good script first and let the project grow from there.

BTW, I haven't seen Green Lantern yet. I was going to last week, but the theaters near my brother's house were only showing it in 3D and after getting ripped off with the 3D version of Thor I am never going to allow hollywood to force me to see a movie with fake 3D again just so they can line their wallets with more of my money than they've rightfully earned. I'd like to think that GL's weak box office is partially due to people avoiding 3D screenings of it, because I want the trend of bad 3D movies done only to increase ticket prices to end as soon as possible. If Warner Bros. had given me the option to see the movie for the fair ticket price I would have already seen it, but now I have to wait until another weekend when my brother and friends are available and the movie is showing in 3D. Forcing people to pay extra money because you have no faith in your product to earn big at the box office is not going to win you a lot of good will.
