Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

Actually, you said things like...

My prediction is $270 million domestic. I honestly believe that 34 million people here in America would want to see Green Lantern.

Nothing about GL fans there.

Show me where I said that Green Lantern had huge awareness. Those are just predictions and can be just as wrong as anybody else's.

And was in trailers before the release of the film. Face it. That song helped sell the movie.

You're right. Iron Man made 100 million dollars opening weekend because it used a song in a trailer. Are you REALLY trying to make this argument? This is weak at best. No one listens to that song and thinks "I love that Iron Man movie!" They think about the song. Movies use songs in trailers all the time that have nothing to do with the movie. Should people associate 46 & 2 with Captain America now?

The song is not proof Iron Man is more iconic than GL. If the song was about Iron Man, then yes, it would be arguable. But, that is not what it is about. Now, cartoons, etc. Fair game. But, GL was in Justice League and such much more recently than Iron Man was in cartoons prior to his movie. So, I would argue in favor of GL here.

To say that Green Lantern should be known by folks of all ages is just naive.

Green Lantern, believe it or not, outside comic book fanboys is an unknown.

Try the girlfriend test.

Just ask your girlfriend if she knows the following:

- Superman? Yes.
- Batman? Yes.
- Wonder Woman? Yes.
- Spider-Man? Yes.
- Hulk? Yes.
- Captain America? Yes.
- Iron Man? Yes (albeit recently only).
- Flash? Yes (surprisingly).
- Wolverine? No, but she knows the X-Men.
- Thor? No, but she knows of the greek character.
- Green Lantern? Huh, a green what!?

Even some of my friends / co-workers who don't read comic books actually think the name alone of Green Lantern sounds lame. "Why the hell would a super hero be called Green Lantern?" - I've read people on twitter say that.
Thor isn't Greek his Norse (Scandinavia) Northern Europe.

GL and Iron Man were in the same boat brand wise. Hindsight is 20/20 but the problem with GL was it's failed marketing campaign and the fact that the movie didn't feel the slightest bit fresh, as a matter of fact it's kinda stale. GL could have overcome it's opening weekend like Super 8 did and had legs but it wasn't an interesting or fresh enough movie to the moviegoers at large.

Look at Super 8 for a second: Super 8 was staring a bunch of unknown child actors and T.V stars and Paramount botched it's marketing so it only opened with 35.5mil. It had a very low opening working against it and the competiton for it's audience was somewhat fierce but because of good word of mouth, it's having a good run and should end with 125 to 130mil overall. Not the gangbusters results that people first thought it would do but a good result for a movie that opened with 35mil and didn't cost 200mil to make. Thats a 3.5 to a 3.7 multiplier. Thats a damn good multipler for a movie of this sort in this day and age.

The critics have very little to do with it, if GL was well liked the audience would have continued to see it. It wouldn't be heading for only 120mil after a 53mil opening weekend.

Show me where I said that Green Lantern had huge awareness. Those are just predictions and can be just as wrong as anybody else's.

I never claimed you said GL had “huge awareness”. I was pointing out that when people questioned how much the general audience was aware of GL, you scoffed at the idea (as I showed above). Now, however, you state it like it’s a no-brainer.

Wow, dnno1 has made the thread more entertaining than the movie itself.

I laughed when he posted some link to that Catholic site about "only god makes things out of thought" ergo GL is bad. Paraphrase. Really? What a minority publication that even a Catholic reading it would have to laugh at the abusrdity of it.

I could be wrong by dnno1 looks like the poster who swears that the US Constitution allows for Socialism. So if that's the same guy well....

Whether the US Constitution allows for Socialism or not means nothing because Socialistic based programs exist and have for many decades and most people in America love them and want them to continue. I'm currently going to college with the help of the goverment and I love doing that.

Anyway, dnno1 is doing some mighty fine back bending to try and make GL look like less of a failure...kinda a silly thing to do if you ask me because the proof is in the pudding. The boxoffice numbers do not lie.

Funny that socialistic-based programs didn't exist for decades and life got along fine. Now it's a fight over who has a corporate jet, really? But I digress.

GL's proof is in the pudding as are other things but not the thread for that. Sorry I brought it up, I was only attempting to illustrate how silly I view his backbending if it is indeed the same poster.

Jordanstein makes a good comment that I have been trying to explain (unsuccessfully) to DC fans for quite some time now.

'Green...Lantern' just sounds ridiculously silly. It sounds silly. He looks silly with the mask. And the mythos is silly. The whole colour coded emotion powers with magic space rings and blue big-headed midget protectors of the universe is UNBELIEVABLY silly to non-comicbook people, and even to people into comicbooks but not into DC/GL.

Sorry to GL fans and I am truly not trying to troll here but this movie NEVER had a chance. It was destined to fail. It had great potential to be an epic movie for GL fans. But it never had a chance of being anything but silly, cheesy, nonsense to the majority of the GA. No amount of marketing could have helped. Should they have spent more than $175 million dollars???

Green Lantern is no more sillier than Star Wars. Light Side of the Force vs the Dark Side of the Force. The leader of the group of the Light Side is a short green midget who's able to go toe to toe with characters much taller in stature. Execution is key.

GL: colour coded emotion powers.....

Anyway I've realised that pointless to get many DC people to see reason. Good luck with the reboot in 5+ years when it will completely fail again.

You say you're not trying troll but you make a trolling comment. Knock it off.

I'm glad mods are cracking down on that silly Marvel V. DC garbage. It ruins the boards.

Show me where I said that Green Lantern had huge awareness. Those are just predictions and can be just as wrong as anybody else's.

The difference is when you make them, it's a curse. ;)

Remember way back, when we started the whole predictions with boxoffice.com stats and all, and I told you to predict that it would stink if you wanted it to have even the slightest chance at success? Next time, follow my advice. :D

We love you, bro.

Dnno has made this thread come alive. Freakin' hilarious. :lmao:

I can't believe he's trying to say the song was that important to the movie. HILARIOUS!!

On the whole GA aspect of GL I have alot of friends who dont read comics and they didnt much about him and most didnt even know there was a man inside the Iron man suit.

Oh, please. Out of the thousands of songs that were written and released over the decades, Ozzy Osbourne's is one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of all time. "Iron Man" won a Grammy for best Performance in 2000, 30 years after the song was released. The song was even featured in the 2005 version of "Guitar Hero".

Lots of people still don't care about metal music, Rolling Stone, Grammy, and Guitar Hero. You want a more popular music? Try a Justin Bieber tune or more Poppish music.

I think he's frustating. Instead of just admitting that the movie is disliked and is a boxoffice failure he makes up a million excuses and tries to twist the terrible numbers into good news.

If the movie hits 200mil worldwide it's still a bomb, 250mil and it's still a bomb. Unless you are one of those goobers who believes that studios keep 100% of the ticket sale revenue.

This movie has no chance of being anything but a bomb. It's going alongside X3, Wolverine, Fantastic Four 2 and Hulk as some of the fastest dropping films in the genre and with the expection of Hulk, those were freakin sequels! The critics didn't kill this movie, the marketing and WB's choice of director and writers killed this film.

How f**king hard is to turn a comicbook about a space cop into a movie about a space cop? Most of the recent hit movie Star Trek didn't take place on earth, why the hell did this movie? Who's bright idea was it to hire a decidedly grounded director to take on such outrageous material? Campbell was sooo wrong for this film it's hurts and the writers wrote a really, really s**tty screenplay, plus they didn't choose the most popular and visible Green Lantern which, like it or not, is not Hall Jordan. That last part was just an iffy business choice but the rest were just terrible ideas.

Oh he is frustrating, I've had my fair share of arguments with him where he brings up the most bizarre statistics and articles to back up his views. That said, the lengths to which he's trying to spin GL's box office takings is kinda hilarious to see. Fact is GL was just never good enough, it wasn't the concept, it was the execution, a real fan would just admit that and stop trying to pass the blame elsewhere.

Maybe I should laugh about it too. Getting heated won't get me anywhere.

As it stands now GL is a joke so you may as well laugh.

Agree.

"In darkest space...and coldest too...judge me not by my size, will you...."

And was in trailers before the release of the film. Face it. That song helped sell the movie.

It's called genius marketing knowing that the song and the character has no relationship whatsoever.

I don't know why people as setting the bar so high for this film when it never had the publicity of the films ahead of it. According to Box Office Mojo, it is the 13th highest grossing film of the year (WorldWideBoxoffice.com has it at 16th). There are currently more than 80 films that made less than Green Lantern (and will never make any more than Green Lantern). That's not really that bad to tell you the truth if you look at the fact that there are. The only bad thing is that it is questionable if they will make their money back at the box office. Even then, that still doesn't mean that they won't get their money back from their other revenue streams.

Never had the publicity of other films!?! Are you kidding me? The GL marketing and publicity campaign dwarfes any other movie in recent memory.
