The Avengers Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): Will tie-in with The Avengers

This movie will need a lot of A-list talent

sometimes too much A-list talent sinks a franchise. But I'll humor you.

- Star-Lord is very easy to cast physically. You just need someone with enough charisma to pull the role off. He's sort of the Kirk/ Stark model of snarky hero, but with a legitimate sense of responsibility (like both Kirk and eventually, Stark.)
- If Lone Ranger is big, I'd love to see them cast Armie Hammer as Adam Warlock. At 6'5", with good acting chops, he could totally play a sort of artificially engineered Godling.
- Even though there are other actresses I'd prefer, Olivia Wilde could play Gamora.
Come to think of it, any hot actress 5'7" or up could probably do it, but I'd prefer one with some acting ability.
- Ryan Gosling as Nova. He'd never take it, but It'd work.
- Many people cast Vin Diesel as Drax. Personally, I think Drax is too much of a supporting role for a star as big as Diesel, and I'm not a huge fan of Vin's acting (Granted, Nu Drax is basically Riddick.) I doubt he'd ever agree to do the movie, but I'd tentatively give him my approval.
- Lucy Liu as Mantis would be great. Mantis is already a mother in GOTG continuity of a roughly pre-teen alien boy, so casting someone in their 40s isn't going to sink the character.
- Rocket Raccoon can be whoever you want him to be, though I'm personally saying cash in on the popularity of Game of Thrones and use Peter Dinklage.

I would LOVE to see the Squadron Supreme pop up in an Avengers film. Probaly the closest we'll ever see a film version of a JLA cross-over.

What would they have to advertise then ? That talking dog for the kids ? The kids audience can only take you so far & unless you want MARVEL's first Green Lantern type of failure. Then they only have well known names to help sell this movie. Especially with a property that most of the main stream audience does not know about

So what type of talent are you thinking would be appropriate? Name names.

I really want a Squadron Supreme stand alone based on the 80s mini...but I doubt they'll ever do that; it's too far removed from the current MCU.

Speaking of the dog, I hope Cosmo's lips don't move. I really found the idea of a regular dog speaking to you with his mind ala Buck Bundy from "Married With Children" funny. The Russian accent just makes it even funnier to me. They'll probably connect him and Rocket Raccoon somehow for the movie. They are after all earth creatures who've been experimented on. This whole movie is going to be so tricky to pull off that it's probably the most excited I've ever been for any Marvel flick.

What would they have to advertise then ?

1. [YT]ZmfiIqzdIbM[/YT]

2. "From the studio that brought you THE AVENGERS comes..."

3. I have a feeling that this is going to be a true space opera unlike Green Lantern, and it'll give audiences something they haven't seen before.

4. They say the script is incredible

5. This is going to partially be Thanos' movie which would be a big seller in itself for the simple fact that he'll be the villain in Avengers 2/3 and people will want to know about him beforehand which is the reason people are revisiting Thor to understand more about Loki.

I think Marvel studios and the association with the Avengers' shared universe will be the main selling point. And that's a big deal now.

It sounds like this film will work almost like a prelude to Avengers 2. They should be fine with some recognizable faces and an eclectic mix of talent.

Can someone post a "required reading" list for the current version of the team? Ive started reading the main Annihilation mini-series trade, but what else should I read? Thanks.

The current team had a pretty short run with 25 issues so I think you're good with just that and "Annihilation: Conquest" as far as required reading goes. Though I will admit it's great to read all the cosmic books together. They're connected pretty nicely.

Savage did you read the entire run of the latest GotG? I was wondering if they actually wrapped it up properly or if it was abrubtly cancelled.

I actually haven't been through em all yet. I'm on issue 20 and getting into the whole Realm of Kings saga that has all the books connected. I'm not looking forward to having no more Guardians to read. lol

I'd recommend reading all of the 00s cosmic stuff. Guardians characters and the tone of the team book are sprinkled through out those other titles.

The new incarnation of Guardians of the Galaxy is far more entertaining than the previous. It's actually a great, energetic read with dynamic characters. Lot of humor as well as action. Rocket Raccoon and Groot are a fantastic duo and would work on film. Use a little imagination and have fun with the concept.

While I think a Black Panther film would be cool, he doesn't have nearly the potential as GotG which opens up the whole cosmic side of storytelling for Marvel. Thor and Avengers gave a taste of it, but GotG could blow it open.

I love the Annihilators trade I read. Beta Ray Bill isn't appearing on screen anytime soon, though. Nor is Silver Surfer going to appear in a Marvel film until the FF rights revert to Marvel (hopefully the Fox FF reboot stalls).

Regarding the GotG cast, Starlord seems obvious. He's a human (half anyway) that gets taken into space, so he fills the audience's roll of new guy in alien world. Rocket Raccoon and Groot are needed. Drax would be great as he was created to kill Thanos. I'd say Gamora, as a bad-ass killer. Maybe Warlock but don't really deal with his origin at all. He was originally created on Earth, but you don't want to have him and Starlord being from Earth. But I could see Warlock as being enigmatic and interested in pursuing Thanos, but he doesn't really say why. Maybe deal with him as being quasi-spiritual, as an anti-thesis to Thanos' death-worshipping.

lol Yeah Warlock's whole Origin needs to be redone seeing as FF isn't at Marvel. lol
I'd have to agree with the Norin thing. With Surfer at Fox I would not doubt they take a similar route like from the animated Planet Hulk.

So I'm guessing Galactus is also unavailable. Or is it a Kingpin situation?

I think the critics who think negatively of a movie because it has no well-known actors in it, and is set entirely in an outer space, non-Earth, alien environment, have conveniently forgotten about this obscure independent film from a few years back:

The Avengers broke a lot of "rules" for a blockbuster, and I'm optimistic that GOG will do the same.

So who should direct this puppy? Whedon will probably be too busy preparing for TA2 and Brad Bird seems to have committed himself to other projects the next couple years, so who else?

Seems they already have a script, but since rewrites are likely, maybe they should hire someone who knows how to rework a script as well as direct.

Someone somewhere suggested Drew Goddard, with Whedon producing and rewriting if necessary. Maybe you need someone more experienced for a project this size.

I think the most important element is someone who can intelligently direct a large ensemble cast. The general audience and critics have no idea who these characters are; making them likeable is just as important as providing spectacle.

I believe Goddard can do that on a writing level, but he doesn't seem to have a whole lot of directorial experience.
