Plus we're going to be getting a talking tree and a gun-toting raccoon. Don't know how serious you can be with those two in a film.

That logic is terrible. That's like saying you can't be serious about a guy who dresses up in a bat costume.

As long as the writers do their job and get us to believe in the world they establish, anything can be "serious."

Yeah, I think anyone looking for a straight-faced, serious approach to GOTG is going to be sorely disappointed. The DnA run of GOTG this is primarily based on was very light-hearted and comedic; James Gunn is known as a comedic director; the leading man is known for being in a sitcom. Doesn't mean it's going to be camp or cheese or parody, but it's going to be the total opposite of drama.

This movie's going to be so goddamn fun. [blackout]hopefully[/blackout]

Don't forget the report from ACIN. He said he heard the film's script is more in line with Galaxy Quest or Ghostbusters than it is with previous Marvel films.

I'm thinking the movie will be Galaxy Quest + It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World + a smidgen of Star Wars

Whilst I understand your point and agree with you for the most part that you can make fantasy realistic and believable, you can't deny the challenge of making Rocket Raccoon make sense as a character. People in costumes are easier to justify than a talking Raccoon from outer space.

Why wouldn't there be a race of talking raccoons from outer space? We're non the wiser to what's really out there, and it would be pretty ignorant of us to assume they're all humanoids like us.

I'm not assuming they should all be like us but it would be even more ignorant to assume they're all a very specific breed of earth mammal that simply talks.

I love Rocket Raccoon, I think he's awesome and I can't wait to see how James Gunn handles him but it's naive to assume that simply because it's fiction people will blindly accept a talking Racoon. Of course it needs to be handled deftly. It's always been weird and out there, even for Marvel. Would you batt an eye lid if they had a Howard the Duck cameo?

Three of the names on the cast list are Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace and Karen Gillan, and while it was suspected that del Toro was set to play The Collector, we now have confirmed from a solid source just who is going to be who in the film.

So then: Benicio del Toro is, indeed, The Collector in Guardians Of The Galaxy. Also confirming an earlier rumour, Lee Pace is definitely going to be playing Ronan The Accuser. Karen Gillan, meanwhile, will be playing Nebula in the film.

Lee Pace as Ronan? But I thought he might have a spin-off later. Ronan doesn't really seem like a spin-off character.

Which one is Nebula again? Is she that scantily clad one?

I wonder if Ophelia Lovibond will indeed be Carina since we do have the Collector now.

Could be the Annihilators.

I think Star Wars is a good example. Looking at Yoda, you'd think nobody would ever take him seriously; he looks about as ridiculous as a talking raccoon. But the alien-saturated world was set up so well in New Hope and Empire that we didn't bat an eye at Yoda and everybody took him seriously.

If they can achieve the same effect with Rocket, I think it would work just fine.

I've given up trying to understand this movie. Call me next August

Okay, I'm cool with all that. As some of us speculated, Gillan is Nebula. Honestly there was no other choice for me, she was the only one that made complete sense. As a space pirate and (supposed) granddaughter of Thanos she met all criteria for being in this movie.

BdT as Collector makes sense. I know some wanted him to be Thanos, but the role of Collector could make full use of the character and I believe he will definitely be in Avengers 2.

As for Pace being Ronan, I knew he was the only one that could be if Joblo's report was right but I was really hoping he's be Nova. It's weird to have the Nova Corps and Rhomann Dey in this movie and not have THE Nova, Richard Rider...who has existed for much longer than the interpretation of the Corps they will be using in this movie. Meh, I guess this makes it less likely that the Corps and Xandar will be destroyed than I thought, since without Dick Rider there's no one to carry on the legacy.

Anyway, him being Ronan brings up all kinds of other possibilities, the biggest of them being the Kree. I wonder if they're going to take inspiration from the Ultimate comics and make Ronan the son of Thanos and essentially his herald or will they stick to 616 and make him leader of the Kree? I wouldn't mind them combining both, because interestingly all 3 villains in the film are blue, which means they could represent them all as being Kree of origin.

Rocket doesn't come from a "race of talking raccoons from outer space." He was one of many genetically-engineered earth animals who was created to serve as both pet and guardian to the inmates of an intergalactic looney bin.

So me and Dent and a few others called it right on Nebula. That would almost certainly put her in league with Yondu. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to make her a Centaurian as well, one of Yondu's race.

If Pace is definitely playing Ronan, we can rule out that role as one of the possibilities for the Vin Diesel role. If Vin is, indeed, being cast for GOTG (and that's still a big assumption....I still think, for all we know, it could've been Fox that was interviewing him for a Marvel movie like FF), then Thanos seems to be more and more likely for him.

I'm excited by the idea of Ronan and the Kree making an appearance, but I'm still trying to figure out what they want with the Guardians. I also find it hard to believe they'll include the Kree without any (apparent) reference to Mar-Vell.....this has just *gotta* set the stage for Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers....it's just GOTTA!

I still find the idea of The Collector boring, though, and I feel like BDT might be wasted on it. I'm sure the MCU Collector will have a lot more color and a bigger role than the comics, but for now, I just don't get it.

Assuming this report is any truer than the others, the cast is now starting to look like this:

Guardians: Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Bautista), Rocket, Groot

Nova Corps: Nova Prime (John C. Reilly), Worldmind (Glenn Close)

Kree: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace)

The Collector: Collector (Del Toro), Carina (Ophelia Lovibond)

Centaurian Pirates: Yondu (Michael Rooker), Nebula (Karen Gillan)

Thanos: Vin Diesel

That's a crazy amount of cosmic ass-kickin' coming down hard on the poor Guardians.....can't wait to see all this. :word:

I just want to see if SDCC gives us any hints about the tantalizing cosmic extras waiting in the wings....with this lineup, it's inevitable that Mar-Vell, Ms. Marvel and Nova are on the way.....spinoff movies, or are they saving them for GOTG2? A cosmic TV show, maybe, a la Farscape or Galactica?

Wow, you think Dawson is fat? Awesome views on women there

After seeing literally every inch of her in Trance, I can say that Ms. Dawson has the perfect physique for Gamora and is definitely not fat in any normal sense of the word. bizarre (or just ignorant) statement.

That said, I am perfectly happy with a lithe, lean version of Gamora. More of an assassin than a brawler. And she's an alien, so her physique doesnt have to reflect hours in the gym.

Personally, I think Marvel should take all the artistic license they want with this project. Screw canon. Preserve the "spirit" of the comics but make the film as original as possible.

edit: Vin Diesel as Thanos?!?! Based on what exactly? Havent heard/read anything to suggest this.

double edit: it is quite possible (probable?) that the backstories will be altered - perhaps even drastically - for the film. I happen to like Rocket's "modern" backstory and think flashbacks to this would be both hilarious and awesome, but theres no guarantee they wont change it for the MCU. Same with all the other characters.

Not sure who you're talking about, but no, this is Nebula:

Never seen Pace act, but I am very happy about the inclusion of Ronan, such an awesome character, he is bad-ass and could appear in any number of movies. Nova and Inhumans immediately spring to mind. Not to mention Annihilation and Annihilators down the line.

Nebula is a good addition too. Have to mirror another poster were BDT is concerned, him being The Collector is very anti-climactic to me, as an actor he has the potential to portray a much better character.

Vin Diesel could actually be a sick Thanos. I imagine he'd be largely mo-cap and based on his performance in the Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay game, I actually think he could pull that off. I'm all for Vin or Clancy Brown :P

Also, I'm still holding onto the childish, wishful hope that Coulson will turn out to be Mar-Vell :P

Not to mention Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers down the line! And the Kree-Skrull War!

Someone needs to explain to me why Vin Diesel would make a good Thanos. I don't get it.

Well yeah, there are tons of movies Ronan could play a large role in, glad they signed Pace for multiple films, I believe 6 was the number?

Same. That would be the first announcement for casting in the MCU that I would be disgusted by.

Not sure who you're talking about, but no, this is Nebula:

I'm guessing he was referring to Angela.

Anyway, I'm stoked about Pace playing RtA, mostly because it paves the way for Carol Danvers to be in A2 (shut up! it's my dream. let me have it.).

Question: in the Ultimates version, was Ronan still Kree?

Diesel is not my first choice but i certainly won't be "disgusted" if he's cast. We don't even know how Thanos is going to be portrayed. He could be completely CGI, in which case Diesel as a voice actor would make a lot of sense (see Iron Giant). Or even if they go part Mo-Cap part CGI ala Ruffalo, i can still see him doing a fine job there.

Ordinarily I'd be against Vin Diesel for most roles, in fact I'm not entirely for him a Thanos, but I have to say, I love him as Riddick. He just has this bizarrely deep, intimidating and intriguing voice and as a voice actor, I don't think he's terrible.

Like, listen to his voice in this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HPvzoD5Os4

My main concern would be his accent isn't 'lordly' enough but it's still pretty cool. I don't think he'd be THAT farfetched to play another marvel universe character tbh, especially voice acting.

No, he wasn't. He was Thanos' son and apart of his empire.
