Guillermo del Toro to Direct Tarzan

DorkyFresh said:
heh...most comic fans liked Blade 2, most critics liked Hellboy, and almost EVERYONE who's seen Pan's Labyrinth has praised it and WE'RE the delusional ones for not thinking Soldier was better than anything Del Toro directed?

seems to me someone needs to take a look in the mirror.

yeah...you and about 20 other people in the entire world.

Hence del Toro's STELLAR box office performance on his films. They average $33,765,882 per movie. WOOOWEEEEE he is loved.

I could care less what he makes, just keep his hands off Tarzan.

:whatever: Like money is answer to everything...

of course you would use his first few, lesser known movies to fit your argument...

...let's look at the gross for his latest (better) movies. Hellboy made 59 and a half a million and Blade 2 made 82 mil which totals to 141 mil. Now let's compare Anderson's last 2 movies...Resident Evil made 40 mil and AvP made 80 mil which totals to 120 mil and if we take his 3rd latest movie (the one you hold in such high regard), Soldier, and add it's pathetic 14 and a half million gross to his last 2 films it comes up to 134 mil. so...with his last 2 films Del Toro managed to make more than Paul Anderson could with his last 3 films.

now let's look at the tomatometer from rottentomatoes.com. Blade 2 got a 52% while Hellboy got a 79% which total up to 131. by comparison, Resident Evil got a 34% while Aliens vs Predator got a horrible 22% which totals up to 56. once again...we'll add the pathetic excuse for a move, Soldier, which got a ridiculous 5% and Anderson's total is 61.

so...recap...Guillermo's last 2 films made 141 mil while Anderson's last 3 films made 134. Guillermo's last 2 films scored 131 on the tomatometer while Anderson's last 3 films scored 61. so if you're saying that Anderson is a mediocre filmmaker and Del Torro is a bad filmmaker, then please explain to me why his latest movies are more successful than Anderson's...

I'd also like to add that Pan's Labyrinth has a 97% at Rotten Tomatoes. :o

i was gonna mention that but i forgot...good on ya mate!

WHOA I was just commenting on Del Toro's LACK of a blockbuster.

Defensive defensive. ;)

Watching him, Inarritu, and Cuaron on Charlie Rose right now. Don't know if it's a repeat or not, but have any of you seen it? These guys are such a blast to watch. They really have a great relationship and clearly respect each other as filmmakers.

Not to mention, I didn't realize they all had films coming out at the same time.

01-03-2007 - GDT Talks Tarzan
JewReview.net talked Tarzan with Guillermo recently, and the big man dished on some of his feelings for the project. Here are a few quotes:
It’s a done deal that we’re developing the screenplay and I really want to work with John Collee, and I loved Master and Commander; I read them and I never felt they could be made into a 20-part BBC miniseries.

I’m always obsessed by nurture verses nature – it’s how this guy learns to become an ape at first, and then how this ape learns to be a man in the second place, and then he becomes what he needs to become and that is Tarzan. I think that’s a process I’m interested in whether the character’s name is Hellboy or Tarzan - it’s how you learn who you are in the process of choosing.

Found this over at Del Toro Films.

Sweet Jesus! Someone's finally gonna make a Tarzan film for this millenium! I loved the disney film and died a little bit at the TRavis Fimmel debacle but I think this is going to rock everyone's socks off. And those apes are probably gonna look sick as hell!

As far as the story goes, yeah they oughtta go with the origin cuz it's never really been told right. Disney pretty much ignored the whole British Nobilliy asPect and Lamberts film focused too heavily on it. If Tarzan's gonna fight monsters and discover lost worlds, we can leave that for the sequels. The last time they tried to jumpstart Tarzan without an origin tale, we got the CasPer Van Dien film.

So I'm gonna be looking forward to seeing Tarzan, Jane, Nkima, Jab Bal Ja, Tantor, Korak, Meriem, Muviro and of course, La on screen.

i think that's awesome that they are thinking about a tarzan movie. it's about time, tarzan has been one of my favorite characters since i was a kid. althought the only tarzan movie i saw in the theaters was bo dereks version. i would love to see what del toro can dream of with tarzan.

The Disney version has been the best so far IMO. After "Pan's Labyrinth", I'm excited to see Guillermo DelToro take on this complex character as well as the majestic surroundings.

Citizen Kane, Fight Club, Brazil, and John Carpenter's the Thing were flops or only did modestly well, so, I don't really give much of a **** how much money a movie makes.

I'm sure those four films didn't make, all together, as much profit as "You've Got Mail or Bridget Jone's Diary, so if you think YGM and BJ'sD are better movies than CK, FC, B, or JC'sTT.....enjoy.

OMG If Del Toro is directing I AM F***ING THERE!!

Damn! He needs time to direct "At the Mountains of Madness", that's the movie for him, not Tarzan.

He always does one personal, smaller-scale, less commercial movie, then a larger, more mainstream, commercial movie.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOD NO.

Del Toro sucks and would be totally wrong for this project. I so want to see a Tarzan movie done right (as NONE have yet) and I really do not see Del Toro being the guy to do this right. What has he made worth watching yet? NOTHING!!

Please WB, look somewhere else for a director.

:ninja:

That guy is a fool, he wouldn't know a talented director if one raped him.

He always does one personal, smaller-scale, less commercial movie, then a larger, more mainstream, commercial movie.

That's why after "Hellboy" (which is commercial) he should make "At the mountains of madness". But I think that AtMoM will be a very expensive a commercial movie too.

I have no idea why Del Toro is considered so highly around here. The man is a terrible, terrible director. ALL his movies suck.

You get the Booby Award for the Month of December. Hell, lets just throw in January and February too. :whatever:

Pan's Labyrinth was his little personal film (regardless of the acclaim).
Next is a big one.
AtMoM is a "personal" one.
I've read his own asessment on this in 40 interviews.

Actually, GdT wants about 60 million for ATMoM. So, even if he wants it to be a personal movie, he's going to have to use Hollywood's money and make some sacrifices.

His next personal film will probably be 3993.

His next big project is Hellboy, which I think he'll follow with ATMoM (If everything works out right.) After that, it could be either 3993 or Tarzan.

Yeah, I am REALLY excited to see how del Toro's Tarzan shapes up...he's the right man for the job, that's for sure!

CAH

I think he can do it. Make Queen La the villain, take them to her domain of half men/half ape creatures, and you gots an adventure.

If he's going to do Edgar Rice Burroughs, I'd rather see John Carter on Mars by Del Toro.
