Endgame Hawkeye/Clint Barton - Jeremy Renner

I mean he got no screen time in IW, so he better get a lot this time around. He's in a lot of the leaked promotional material with the rest of the team though, so I'm guessing he will start out as a rogue man on a mission, but by the end will join up with the OG Avengers to stop Thanos.

Have to see it in liveaction for a judgement.

Am I the only one who sees a lot of "cultural appropriation", "samurai because it's cool" and "Japanese stereotypes" headlines on the horizon?

Everything we've seen about the character design, the Japanese setting and rumours of Yakuza just reeks of Western stereotypes. I don't think Marvel means to make a cacriature of Japan but in this day and age I can't help but feel the whole Ronin design and setting is just...tacky.

I mean as long as it makes sense in context of the movie I honestly don't see the problem with it. Clint goes to Japan for reason that we still don't know about yet and the character is also in a completely different mindset after likely losing his whole family in the snapture. Sure, maybe it is a bit stereotypical and while I can see why you might be bothered by it I'm sure that the Russo's have come up with a good explanation for it.

Oh, they better. Because even as a tourist in Japan, I didn't exactly see samurai swords and armour lying around department stores for someone to grab. The only place an outsider would find those things is if they looted a museum.

At this point, we have no idea why Clint is in Japan or what happened so there is no reason to assume that the sequence is somehow "tacky". There are many ways that a weapons master could legitimately come into possession of the gear Hawkeye has in the trailer. Clint could have acquired it during his career as an assassin, while working with SHIELD, or on the open market. There are craftsmen who create swords and armor for collectors, both in Japan and the US. You can buy katanas and other swords on the Internet if that's what you're into.

As for cultural appropriation, that's a conversation that goes both ways. Japanese companies and people also "borrow" freely from other cultures, yet I haven't seen them called out for it. For instance, there are many videos and photos of non-Christians in Japan and other countries celebrating Christmas, with decorations and presents. Halloween is also widely enjoyed by non-Christians. Both holidays are stripped of their deeper religious and cultural meanings and may, in fact, be completely misunderstood. There are doubtless other examples of cultural appropriation of aspects of Western culture in Japan and elsewhere. You may even have seen some other instances in your travels.

Are all uses of another culture's symbolism are to be condemned as cultural appropriation? Maybe we need to convene a multicultural summit to debate the matter.

I bet you are real fun at parties. Seriously, I think you need to lay off the SJW stuff.

It looks like they’ve purposely decided to give him a cool role here after so many films of not doing much.

Jeremy Renner has said that he's very happy with the material he was given in Endgame, which gives me hope that he'll finally get the treatment he deserves. Feige commented that having fans clamor for Hawkeye is better than all of the jokes made at our favorite archer's expense, and I can't disagree with him.

One of the most prevalent discussions in the days and months leading up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War is “Where’s Hawkeye?” The character, played by Jeremy Renner, is an expert archer and one of the original Avengers. However, he’s been in virtually none of the film’s marketing materials and his name isn’t on the poster. The omission has fans clamoring to find out why. Well, Feige and the film’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, are loving every second of it.

“I think it’s one of the best things that ever happened to Hawkeye,” Feige told io9. “We [at Marvel] love Hawkeye. There are big, big story things coming up for Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner is as strong an actor as anyone in the MCU and awesome as this character. But ‘The guy with the bow and arrow jokes’, right? There are a lot of ‘Guy with bow and arrow jokes.’ He even makes ‘Guy with a bow and arrow’ jokes in some of the movies. So I love that people go from ‘Oh, Hawkeye is just lucky to be there’ to ‘Oh where is he? He’s not there? Whats going to happen? We need Hawkeye. We want more Hawkeye.’ I love it. It’s the best.”
