"True Detective" has to prove it's more than just a star vehicle," Landgraf said during a session at the Television Critics Assn. press tour. "["True Detective" creator] Nic Pizzolatto has to prove that he can write something really great. The writing and story of 'Fargo' is the star. It can be done with a cast of unknowns."

Shots fired from the CEO of FX.

Looks like he's trying to play up a rivalry between TD and Fargo? That was a cheap blow at Nic btw I think the writing was brilliant in TD.

If it could have been unknowns then why wasn't it? It had the Fargo name it didn't need Thornton or Freeman for marketing as much as TD did. I love Fargo but this argument is flawed.

He's full of s***.

He wrote eight excellent episodes, how has he not proven "that he can write something really great"?

This makes me a grumpy-chan. I sat through the pilot of Fargo and was like "Oh, okay". I see where it's loved but it was seriously super forgettable for me. I haven't, and probably never will watch beyond the pilot episode, either. As much as I love Billy Bob and Freeman, I'm just going to have to pass on the show.

Also, I randomly think about True Detective throughout the day. I think of the tracking shot, mostly. The fight between Marty and Rust. Just small moments from the show that burned their way into my mind forever. True Detective is the superior show. For me, at least.

He seems pissy about the show when I really don't get why he would be. It's not like True Detective completely shut out Fargo with Emmy noms or anything, they both got plenty of nominations.

If anything Bryan Fuller should be setting all these mother****ers on fire. :o

Yeah I don't get it either? I think he made some comments prior too about how HBO was cheating or something by having the show submitted as a drama series vs mini.

Although that would have actually hurt the chances for FX shows like Fargo and AHS.

Oh boy, I love Fargo, but Landgraff should shut his pie hole. Sure, having Woody & Matt is one of the major elements that made the first season as great as it was, but they would have nothing to do without that brilliant writing & Fukunaga's immaculate direction.

Geez people, calm down. I simply took it as him saying for season 2, the show has to supersede the casting and be a great story on its own. Season one built a huge precedent and is going to be difficult to top and can't just be dependent on the buzz of the casting. That's why I love the possibility of Farrell and Kitsch because you can tell it's not just all about the casting and, "which A list stars can we get next to top McConaughey and Harrelson?"

Plus, it's just typical biased rival baiting to stir up press for the Emmy's. He didn't threaten your precious taste. True Detective is still a great show. Now take a breath.... there you go. See how easy that is?

During the Q&A portion, Landgraf added that "Nic is going to have to prove he can write something truly great every single year." Some outlets omitted the final three words of the sentence and turned what was intended as a compliment into a dig, which is believed to have angered HBO and Pizzolatto.
"It seems unreasonable that I should have to issue a clarification for something that was stated clearly in the first place, but nevertheless I repeat, for the record, that I watched True Detective and loved it," he said. "I think Nic Pizzolatto wrote something truly great (and Mathew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Cary Fukunaga also did absolutely stellar work). Nic has created a very high bar for himself, and as a fan of the show and based on his work in season one, I have no doubt he will clear it by a mile with his second incarnation of True Detective. Also, for the record, I am an avid viewer and fan of many of HBO's outstanding original series, and I have a profound respect for Richard Plepler, Mike Lombardo and their entire gifted team. Anyone who claims to love television but doesn't pay attention to the consistently excellent work that HBO is fostering, would be suspect in my book."

Well typical press. Not the whole utter truth to stir up talk for their sake.

He can be great when he doesn't make stupid movies beneath his talent. :(

Vaughn? Well ****, if this is true, the curve balls keep coming.

Will Owen Wilson be his partner? Seriously though Vaughn could work.

I'm still hoping for my boy Taylor Kitsch. :D
