HBO's True Detective - Part 2

True. The show already had an uphill battle before it came out, but even then, shows like Fargo and The Leftovers, at least in my opinion, have shown that it's possible to match or even outdo the performance of a first, great showing.

I'd agree that in True Detective's case, trying to match Season 2 would be like trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice, particularly with more main leads than Season 1, but the leads did provide some good performances.

I think if True Detective Season 2 didn't have the name "True Detective" behind it, it would've been received better by general audiences. It was nigh on impossible to match let alone top season 1.

Maybe, but it was still too dour and the story was a hot mess.

Agreed. Add to that, Pizzolatto's strange interpretation of noir.

And lines like "thing is, you ain’t that thing no more. What you used to was.”

Pizzolatto writes very distinct and novel-esque dialogue. If you read his prose, dialogue there and on TD sounds pretty much the same. The key is for television is hiring the right actor to deliver them properly or they sound weird. If McConaughey wasn't a great actor or they got the wrong guy, Rust Cohle would be a walking disaster, even if the intent and the writing remained the same.

Oh lord, I'd forgotten how bad the dialog was; that was probably the worst part of the whole show. What about this classic from Vince Vaughn:

"I eat lots of sugar"
*Menacing stare*
"And I've never gotten a cavity."

:lmao:

There's nothing wrong with the line itself. That's a very noir-sounding line, but it was just delivered wrong where it sounds bad and just comes out awkward. Vaughn is a mixed bag in the show performance wise. He has stellar moments like his scene with the kid and others like that. I can't help but think if someone like James Gandolfini played the role. He would have made the lines and how they sounded totally work.

Season 1 is brilliant. Season 2 was good (I was in the minority, defending that season a LOT when it aired). But I think season 3 will be better.

I love this anthology series. I don't necessarily need it to go further than three or four seasons but at least one more after S2 makes me extremely happy.

I'm good with three. I have a feeling Pizzolatto only had two in him before S1 aired. He likes to tell stories about where he lives and he's fascinated by environment. Being how Louisiana and California are the two places he's lived and knows, the question is, what could you do a third time? So if he needs a little help for inspiration I've no problem that it's David Milch.

I'd like to see the mid-west or the east as locations. I'm down for an Elmore Leonard-esque urban western type of thing. I could see Milch and Pizzolatto doing that.

If Season 3 is a go, I'd like to see them tackle a religious cult type story.

Someone a while back suggested Detroit. That would be so suitable for Pizzolatto's gothic sensibilities.

@krolljvar

Ali nice get for season 3 of TD, had also heard Jon Hamm's name as someone who met early on for role but eventually passed

I'm just happy it's coming back at all. :D

Nice to have some news on this. You would think Ali could kinda do whatever he wants right now so thats reassuring

I'm curious if they have some up-and-coming director in mind for an episode or two.

Probably not, but I'd like to see someone unique put their stamp early on.

Mahershala would be a great lead, btw.

Wasn't Hamm rumored for S2?

The issue with S2 probably wasn't with the directing, but I kind of wish they'd go back to a singular filmmaker.

I've no idea where this is going and I love it. I really gotta watch Moonlight now.

So maybe this will air next year? I just can't wait. This is like waiting for a movie.

It would be nice, but if it's something outside of where he's familiar with, it might take longer, and apparently, the trades said it took him until this year to settle on a concept. I'm assuming he's just finished the scripts if he started in March.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Arkansas. It was the original location in the first drafts of season one before Louisiana. Plus Pizzolatto lived there while in grad school. He could do something that takes place in the wilderness perhaps.

Yeah, if there's something season 2 proved it's that Pizzolatto can use someone else influential on set to push back against some of his ideas.

I recall a pretty recent interview with Ali where he talked about wanting to play a lead since he's never done that yet. Looks like he'll finally get that opportunity.

I'm thinking more likely early 2019.
