HBO's True Detective - Part 2

As long as production keeps going forward, that's all I care about. :)

Yeah, as long as things stay in line. Two episodes should be enough for Saulnier to establish some kind of tone and pacing.

I was worried about this. :o

I didn't know Saulnier was only going to direct three episodes (I thought he'd be directing a lot more), but at least there's two. I'm sure the scheduling conflicts was a real factor given the tougher shoot, but I'm thinking it didn't help that he and Pizzolatto weren't agreeing as was reported in the Variety article.

I'll concede this show benefits from a more consistent sole vision in S1's Fukunaga so this is disappointing. But it's not like he was kicked off from the beginning which would have raised serious alarm bells. I guess the word to describe it is it sucks that there's two instead of three Saulnier directed episodes.

This still won't be season one level, and this dents my absolute excitement a bit. Yet I'll still be here to post photos of the backs of actors heads.

Don't forget Hold the Dark directed by Saulnier this year on Netflix.

I hope that helps ease this blow, Doc.

A little. I was really hoping the Pizzolatto/Saulnier collaboration would work out. They seemed like a great match. But I wouldn't be surprised if Saulnier ran into the same problem as Fukunaga. Both are auteur's in their own right from a director's medium and it just naturally clashes with Pizzolatto who has an authorial vision and where television is a writer's medium. I get it. It's just Pizzolatto is better off just directing this show himself if that's going to happen. Again, the news just sucks. It's not awful. It's not like this show is in danger of going off the rails and it's a Lord and Miller situation.

Really bummed Saulnier left the show, as he was the only reason I was interested in season 3. Still, as Doctor Jones said, hopefully two episodes was enough to make his mark. Too bad he never had any input on the scripts.

I never expect anything to be on S1's level. That was truly special and I don't think they'll ever get to that again. I just want it to be on par or better than S2 (which I still liked)

This doesn't change my expectations either way.

I'm sure it'll be better than season two. Season one was television's definition of lightening in a bottle and the perfect storm of elements will always loom over the rest of the show no matter what.

Just finished up both seasons, and it was very interesting! S1 had really acting from McConaughy and Harrelson, directing, cinematography, writing!

While I didn't enjoy S2 as much, I was still engaged by the characters, cinematography and the season got better as the episodes went on! Ray was the standout character for me, but Ani, Paul and Frank were really good!

Looking forward to S3!

Im glad you liked them. Heres to hoping season 3 continues the greatness. :)

I found this on reddit. From someone who was an extra during filming.

I have heard from multiple people involved with the show that several people, including big name actors, got frustrated with Saulnier, and most of it was around the constant lagging behind of the filming schedules. It sounds like he had trouble making his day's shoots frequently, according to various people I've spoken to.

There was also an encounter with a frustrated crew member where right before Saulnier's release, they said they didn't shoot at a point because "their big director didn't feel like shooting that day."

So according to reddit: Beware, these are BIG SPOILERS if true.

McConaughey has been spotted around where they're filming according to some locals. Now this is just pure rumor and I haven't seen this anywhere else so it could be bull.

But if true: it would be disappointing. Not that I would hate seeing Rust Cohle again and I would still love it, but it limits the potential of what this show is. I just hope this isn't grovelling, "Please like us again." True Detective is so much more than just the occult, Rust Cohle and its certain darker tones. I sometimes feel people even look at those things and think that's what makes True Detective so great. It's not even American Horror Story. It's more general, as long as it's about law enforcement and whatever interests Pizzolatto has. I'm sure it could be interesting and great in its own right, it would just be disappointing. I don't even mind if they took place in the same world and maybe we saw a little reference to season one but Rust Cohle back goes back on what Pizzolatto said this show is. I think it takes more than bringing a beloved character back than to win people back over. He always talked about not wanting to be in service of what other people wanted, so if he's doing it for that then I've lost a little respect for him. That is, if any of this is true.

Season two, as flawed as it is, was at least an attempt to do something totally different and how conscious it was to not be like season one.

^I wouldn't hate it if that happened but I don't really believe that rumor for now.

I really think season 2 gets unfairly sh-- on. It was never going to be as good as S1, which was essentially perfect, but it still did so many things right. I hate how it's treated as a failure when it was nowhere near that, IMO.

I liked season 2 enough to buy it. :)

Yeah... if it wasn't called True Detective it wouldn't have received the drubbing that it had. It wouldn't have erased its problems, but the hyperbole wouldn't have been there.

Season 2's atmosphere was great but its plot was a mess. It needed a few rewrites.

Yeah it's not bad by regular tv standards. It needed better focus and less characters to jump around.

Don't think this was posted, but recent casting news.

Quantico alum Josh Hopkins and Jodi Balfour (The Crown) are set to recur, along with Lonnie Chavis (This Is Us), in the third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO crime anthology series True Detective.

Starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Ray Fisher, the next installment tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Hopkins will play Jim Dobkins, a private attorney in Fayetteville, Arkansas involved in deposing state police detectives in an ongoing investigation. Balfour will play Lori, long-term love interest to Det. Roland West. Chavis will play Wayne Hays’ (Ali) son at age 9.

Jodi Balfour talking about her experience working on S3!

It was also recently announced that you’ve signed on for Season 3 of True Detective.

BALFOUR: Yeah.

What drew you to that? What made you want to be a part of this next season?

BALFOUR: I love HBO passionately. I admittedly didn’t get into Season 2 all that much, but I loved Season 1. And I’m sure it will change in the next five to ten years, but right now, Moonlight and Mahershala Ali … right now, that’s the best cinematic experience that I expect to have, in my lifetime. I’m really willing to have that blown apart by something else, but I was so moved by that film and his performance, amongst others. If this season was gonna be a one man show about Mahershala Ali painting a tree, I would be like, “Please, may I be a part of it?”And then, I just think that Nic Pizzolatto tells this kind of story really potently and with such complexity, that I’m really interested in that kind of storytelling. I’m so excited just to get to learn from all of these consummate professionals. I have a bunch of scenes with Stephen Dorff, which is so fun and so exciting, and then I have a couple with Mahershala and Carmen Ejogo It’s great. I can’t say too much about that, but I feel much more inexperienced than all of them, to get to sit there and be a part of the scenes with them, where I selfishly get to watch them work for hours. That, alone, is something that gets me out of bed, every day.

There’s something so interesting about what the show does with its female characters.

BALFOUR: Yeah. I really like the way that Nic writes human beings. It probably says more about me than anything that I like the honestly that comes with admitting the dark places in our psyches. I really enjoy the way that he writes women.

Well, this was a nice surprise in the lead-up to Sharp Objects.
