Drama HBO's True Detective - Part 3

Fantastic start with the premiere. Main takeaway is this is some great tension and it really feels like a return to the more focused storytelling of Season 1. Much as I like Season 2, I will admit that it sometimes crumbled under telling so many stories at once. This, even though we're in different time periods, is focused on one singular case. And Ali is great in the lead role.

Yup, got that great creepy vibe I just love. :)

True Detective is back. And I'm relieved to see how different this story is. It uses similar frame work to season one but it's doing it in a totally different way with a totally different story. I'm gonna rewatch it because I'm getting over the shock of seeing this show again. I'm thinking this is on par with season one and I didn't think that would happen. I'm just used to season one being this class in it's own but this could be very well reaching it. Let's hope the rest follows suite. But judging by these episodes that might be the case.

I'm hooked into this case. A superb start.

Wayne finding Will's body was haunting

“Classic of non literary fiction.”

Self-deprecating as always, Nick.

First two episodes were fantastic IMO. I am loving the fact that this already feels closer to the slow burn storytelling of Season 1, but as others here have said in a much different way. I know **** is going to hit the fan sooner or later and when it does its going to be intense. I knew Ali and Dorff would be great choices as the leads for this season and it shows. Scoot McNairy's performance has been pretty great as well.

Started watching the season. Similarities with the first one are unfortunate, but overall it's definitely return to form. S2 had potential, and it surely had it's moments, but something went wrong there. Still, it's only the second episode and it still can turn to worse.

What I think so far:

Will may have lied to his father when he said they were going to the park to see his friend's new puppy. Because he was at his house the whole time. I think Will and Julie went to see someone. And Julie talking to the two ghosts on Halloween may have something to do with it. Other than that like season one I have no ****ing clue how this is going to turn out right now but I'm having fun thinking it through.

And Freddy Burns and his friends definitely know something.

Julie is alive and reunited with her father in 1990 so how it happens and why and what happens after is a mystery.

The mystery is really intriguing. But they barely revealed anything after two episodes.

The last shot of the second episode seemed to suggest that Wayne has dementia?

I think him having dementia or Alzheimer's disease was pretty obvious in the first two episodes, especially shown in that dinner scene at the end where he kept asking about Rebecca... Actually, in pretty much all the scenes where he's old they show you that there's something wrong with his memory

Damn, I feel like I'm having Alzheimer's too. Totally forgot about that moment, because the final shot overshadowed it somehow.

Yeah I can see that, because of how they presented it with that last shot, like some big reveal or twist.

But you could already tell by the way he talks to that interviewer and his son. Also the show started with him playing that recording in order to remind himself of some important things.

And I could be wrong but I think his daughter Rebecca might be dead, but he "forgot" about it and people don't want to tell him that (anymore)

I don't think she's dead. She's in California like the wife said. I think Henry is just frustrated in seeing his father like that.

Also the whole illegitimate conception for Julie might be a factor. I do think the kids were going to Devil's Den to meet someone.

Also, I didn't notice it until a rewatch, but Elisa Montgomery mentioned the words "crooked spiral" to Wayne in the 2015 portion, which is a callback to that same crooked spiral symbol from the first season.

Just watched the first two eps. So far, so good.

I wonder if it was not only a reference but Wayne's rebuke of it meaning that if you're wondering if this is gonna be occult related, you're wrong. Pizzolatto even confirmed there's nothing occult this season, thankfully

Damn it, knew that after the people being suspicious of Brett Woodard that someone would try and go after him. And the preview for Episode 4 looks like he's not out of the woods yet. But seeing him get that covered item from his home makes me think he's going to retaliate somehow.

Another good episode. I like that we got to see not just the evolution of Wayne and Amelia's relationship, but the strained parts of it and how it impacted them in 1990 as well as Amelia's ghost talking to Wayne in 2015. Oh, and nice for Wayne and Roland to reunite at the end and not be on difficult terms. That was a great way to end the episode.

Another good episode. :) I'm confused and cLueless, but still in love.

What do you all think that Brett Woodard had in that bag of his? Could be either a weapon or maybe a body.

This season is amazing! A true return to form if you ask me. It's taken everything right about Season One and nothing from Season Two and made it must-see for me. I am absolutely clueless about what happened to those kids and what's going on in the 90's portion. I hope it keeps the mystery going and doesn't flake out like the finale of Season One.

Wild "out there" theory, what if Amelia had something to do with it? I would never suspect her, so of course it'd be perfect.

I'm all about the
Amelia is the killer, or one of the killers, or deeply involved in the murders somehow
train, but it does seem almost way too obvious at this point. Need to see how the next few episodes unfold.

I think they want us to assume it's a body but it will be something else.
