Drama HBO's True Detective - Part 3

All previous TD seasons have had major characters seeing visions or ghosts or other things that weren’t there from their PoV. They were written and/or directed by Nic Pizzolatto but not this new season.

The new showrunner explains her approach near the end of this interview:

I suppose the supernatural might be part of the narrative. Or, what appears to be “supernatural” might turn out to be personal visions/madness brought about by…?

Water pollution.

Solid, but still down from the 2.3 million that Season 3's premiere had- not including episode 2 or 3.2 million with Season 2. Still good enough for HBO, I'm sure.

First episode was alright. I’m not blown away yet, but I know that expecting it to be on S1’s level might be setting myself up for disappointment.

there are a lot of interactions between characters and water in the episode. There was the one line where the guy says something is wrong with the water for the past three days.

Exactly. :)

Enjoyed the premier, but honestly, I got more of a 'Mare of Easttown' vibe from the 1st episode than TD, still I look forward to the rest of the season.

I been yearning for a slow burn show I got Fargo now this, solid first episode color me intrigued
love the setting

Although it’s too early to say, one thing I can say I love it how atmospheric the setting is. Everything feels lived in and the acting is good unlike most of the cast of Season 2.

Regarding where I think this is headed

Since this research facility is studying climate change and the girl who died years ago was investigating a mining company’s environmental impacts, I wouldn’t be surprised if the murders are being committed by a few people from said company.

Wasn’t there a scene in one of the trailers where it’s explained that…

The scientists at the research station were drilling ice cores and looking for early lifeforms/the origin of life? Perhaps they found an ancient virus or some such which causes folks to go mad…

EA Poe in his novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. This novel, in turn, was inspiration for Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
Which John W Campbell used as inspiration (arguably ripped off considering he was Lovecraft's editor when Madness was published) for Who Goes There, the story John Carpenter's The Thing is based of which a vhs can be seen on a shelf in the episode. They're deliberately wearing their influences on their sleeve this season.

The total number of characters conflicting with other characters is dialed up to 11. Most since season 2 and its four lead characters.

There’s references to TD Season 1 in the new ep if anyone cares.

I really enjoyed the scene of Liz and Peter just asking each other questions about the case, like why the clothes were folded and why the scientists took off their clothes. It's a simple scene, just two people talking, but I liked seeing their minds play off of each other and their thought process as they try to unravel this mystery. It also shows how they're not just waiting for solutions to pop up, but actively seeking answers.

Also, this season's choice of music at times are definitely choices. But yeah, that particular Season 1 name reference could not have been an accident.

The interview with Issa Lopez is worth checking out.

Yeah, there's that one, too, but the first one was the one that really jumped out.

I think Peter is the only or most likable character so far, which may or may not be a red flag.

I like Navarro's occasional fling, Eddie, if just because he seems to genuinely care for her, his dog, and the food he makes. Sure, he's a side character, but he comes off as pretty chill. Especially for having a Spongebob toothbrush.
