Heimdall was cast!

I do.

You wouldn't have a problem with a white Bishop? Really?

Yes I would... but far less so, than if they did that for Black Panther or Falcon.

If Bishop were changed, I would indeed be confused as to why... If it was trite reasons like... because they were afraid that it would turn away viewers... or they do not like his look and wanted to reinvent him... I would call foul. But if the reason added up, I would let it go.

I was confused about Terry in Spawn. But I didn't harp on it, because it didn't dramatically change much. But if Spawn was changed, I would have been more concerned as he is the central character... and more importantly, because the story carriers an element of conflict, that his powers could only make him look white when he tried to appear without scars... thus adding to his tribulation of trying to reconnect with his family (though they did not explore that element in the film).

I don't agree with the notion that it would result in SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER. Again... if there is a reasoning, like "best available actor for the job"... then I don't see why recasting Bishop would be a problem. I really don't. I suppose one of us is underestimating the black community in America, but in different regards.

Well I was more referring to the fan community but there'd be some grumbing from the other as well to be sure.

I can't think of any possible reason to make Bishop white. Same with Heimdall and making him black.

But Bishop would be even more confusing since the X-men are already popular enough to guarantee draws from all audiences regardless of color, and are already extremely diverse with plenty of white people. There is no homogeneity to disperse, as I suspect is the case with "Thor" as according to the marketing people at the studio.

Bishop being white would serve no purpose at all and would actually be more of a slap in the face than this, IMO.

I do agree. There really does seem like no reason to do somethinmg like that... What I am trying to get at, is that my overall view is not a black and white issue (pun intended :oldrazz:). My concern could be graded on a 10-point scale (10 being bloody murder, 0 being that it worked rather well).

Kingpin - 0

Terry Fiztgerald - 2 or 3 (puzzling, but no big deal)

Heimdall - 3 or 4 (noticeable, and a bit concerning over reasons... but acceptable)

Bishop - 5 (would make no sense, and would disappoint me... but wouldn't turn me upside down)

Falcon - 8 or 9 (Totally bogus and fundamentally changes the character. Marvel would be worhty of impotent ridicule and gnashing of teeth)

Black Panther - 10 (I would demand a written apology from Marvel and an immediate remake)

I gotchya... and I want to qualify my comment. I would have an issue to some degree regarding Bishop (see above).

So if the Falcon shows up in a Cap movie, we can feel free to cast a white guy as Sam Wilson since he's just a supporting character. Hehe, yeah you KNOW the outcry that will happen there if that happened.

I don't know Falcon too well, but I assume him being black is an important facet of the character. If it is an important facet to the character, like his back story is growing up in the Bronx or Harlem or something, then his race wouldn't be changed.

If his skin colour is not important to his character, to his origin, to his back story or whatever, then I wouldn't care if it was changed.

I see you mention War Machine in another post. Rhodes being black is who he is. That is very important to his character, plus, War Machine is a pretty well known character. Changing him to white would be completely different than changing Heimdell to black.

By the same token someone like the Kingpin being white also is who he is. I just intensely dislike changing these things around from the comics. If I was less aware of the source material I probably wouldn't notice it or have a problem, but unfortunately that is not the case.

lets end this, why not just cast Ryan Reynolds to play ever comic book character LOL

you know of course but the general audience who dont follow comic books but watch comicbook movies wont care.

But it isn't. Kingpin grew up in a ghetto and ascended the crime ladder. That could be a white guy, a black guy, a Hispanic guy, a Asian guy. His race doesn't really matter, he's a crime boss.

Rhodes being black is important to the character I feel. He's shown (especially in the old days) that it isn't just a "white mans army". He's sorta a inspiration that way. You change Rhodes' race and you lose all that.

Absolutely none of which was in the movie, so it wouldn't have mattered.

Rhodey - 7 or 8 (Like Bishop... would make no sense, and would disappoint me... but I score even higher, because he is a more established character and it would need pretty strong reasons)

Well it would of mattered to War Machine fans, which is safe to say there is TONS more than Heimdell fans.

And why would they play that up in the movie? The comics are near enough infinite, a movie is not.

Again comparing changing someone like Rhodes to white and Heimdell to black is just, stupid.

Yeah, but Heimdall being black is gonna stick out like a sore thumb in Asgard. Isn't he?

Falcon has integral aspects of his origin and backstory that establish him as a black character. That is a big part of who he is. Inner city street violence, social issues that minorities face... etc, are components of Falcon's characterization.

He was a social worker and city official in Harlem. Kind of like a the Obama of community organizing in Harlem's black community.

Kingpin was the second to Don Rigoletto, a NY crime boss with Maggia connections. He warred his way up similar to a Godfather and Goodfella's type of situation. This is his upbringing. Do you think he would have risen in that environment being a black man? When you reach the inevitable answer of "no" then you have the same situation as Falcon.

maybe or maybe not

some people could say Djimon Hounsou stick out in Gladiator but that never effected that movie cause the film was great. if they example the backstory well in Thor i doubt it will effect you at all. also in Norse mythology Heimdall is foster son or adopted son of Odin so they could add that in the movie.

Well I think changing Rhodey to white would be stupid. I'm sorry that you get to pick and choose which person can be changed and we can't. But at least we're consistent. We don't want anyone changed. But your formula is just arbitrary.

But then again we're just stupid.

Not if there are going to be other blacks in Asgard. We haven't got a clue what they have planned

Just think of the precedence that this will set when they can change supporting characters nationalities of the fly…

...Hmmm guess it is time to rethink that one. :whatever:

I dunno about that. I may be wrong, but the narrative I had in my head (one currently being fleshed out in Jason Aaron's Punishermax) is that Don Rigoletto is willing to let Wilson Fisk be his henchman because of his undeniable strength and presence, and is happy to steal his ideas and pass them off to the other bosses as his own. But while this means his status as Rigoletto's second is secure, Rigoletto makes it clear he'll never rise higher, and never move out of his crummy one-bedroom apartment, because in spite of all his strengths, he's not Italian, he's still just "Wilson Fisk from Hell's Kitchen," as Rigoletto likes to call him.

That particular dynamic could work just as well for a black man. That he could only get so far through natural ascendancy before the petty prejudices of the old guard formed a glass ceiling, meaning he had to climb the rest of the way to the top over a trail of corpses. I'm not even a particular fan of MCD's Kingpin (like I said earlier - John Goodman all the way) but in theory, Ace's point stands there.

Been brought up a lot. He was re-imagined this way IN the comics, and in that story his blackness/whiteness has nothing to do with the character. He was based on Samuel L. Jackson. Very different situation since since prior to this casting announcement there haven't been any black characters (let alone black Heimdall's) in Asgard. Hopefully they explain it or pull it off somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if Branagh is just changing this for the heck of it and to spice things up a bit... he does that... I guess we'll know soon enough.

He couldn't rise higher because he wasn't Italian. But to mob bosses like that, black people are little more than animals. Now while an Irish fellow can't be "made" they can still be in the elite.

Black people are just "****** stick up men" to quote Goodfellas. Little more than tools.

That's hard to understand for me. I consider him a good actor...don't see any reason to dislike him.

"The Cheadle" is a Rhubarb rubber......He rubs my Rhubarb...

Not in a good way. :ikyn:barf:

Some actors make a movie almost a must miss for me, Ben Affleck, Stevan Seagal, Steve Carrel, Will Ferrel and "The Cheadle". The fact that Iron Man 2 has been "Cheadled" automatically brings my expect actions down 98%. :cmad: He always appears to be "acting" to me, and is not a good natural actor at all. He is "Acting with acting", instead of without acting, according to Jason Alexander on the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale. Hopefully War Machine will be on screen more than Rhodey/"The Cheadle"....
