well i'm not misinformed because nothing really you've said here, I haven't already heard before. i think if you asked a hundred people who tom welling was, people would say "who?" most people don't even watch smallville. especially if you look at the ratings. yes it has a fan base, a loyal one at that, but it's still on the cw; which does not get as many people watching as the big networks. i think you give tom welling way too much credit. yes he has been good on smallville, and I love the show and haven't missed an episode, but to say that he didnt accept the movie role because he wanted to help his fellow actors? how would one even know that. singer always wanted to have an unknown and from what i've read brandon routh was always his number 1 choice.
gough/millar and singer had communication throughout the productions because they didnt want to step on anyone's toes out of respect and at the time didn't want the franchises to really connect or confuse people. as far as the recent interview at comic con, he says that he's always been open for the role, but that's easy to say when he knows the show is coming to an end. he has also said that if you he had become superman when the fans wanted him to be, the show would have ended long ago. that really doesn't sound like someone who would want to play the role of superman. he leaves a lot of things open ended as not to offend the fans of the show. at least thats the perception he gives, and there's nothing wrong with that, but i think it gives fans false hope. the show might also be selling merchandise, but i know i have never seen one smallville shirt worn in the places i've been. it may make 200 million, but i'd be very surprised where it's coming from. it said that it made 200 million yearly? maybe it did like 400 million one year and then 100 million a few years and it averages 200 million? i dont know, but i find that number to be a bit high. i wish it were true, but it just doesnt seem realistic. i'd also like to know where you got the 50/50 for him getting the part. it just seems a bit high. there are so many different factors so to come up with that stat, i'm just curious. you have snyder, nolan, the wb and the actor. they could all want different people for the role. even if welling were offered the part, who knows if he'd turn it down. i know you think he would definitely accept it after smallville, but that's not necessarily true. it has also been well documented that he wants to go behind the scenes and be more of a producer. he's also said how he may be too busy to do more. yes he said that if the fans were to ask for more smallville, maybe there might be something after the season, but that may be tv movies of superman? i would totally be down for that. if i had my way i'd have tom welling in a superman related tv show, routh take on the superman movies, and a new actor for justice league type movies. that for me would be ideal.
now i know this is a long post but to say that i'm misinformed? that's not true because i really dont think welling wants to play the part. i think he's terrified to put on the suit because he really doesnt want to put the suit on. if he was really for the fans, why did it take him so long to get to a comic con convention? yea he likes his privacy, but you make him out to be some sort of saint. especially with the "he didnt take on the part for the good of the cast". oh well, i'm probably coming off as a welling hater, but i just dont see him getting, or wanting the part. especially if it's a movie thats an origin.
1º You can't just go by the ratings. A lot of people don't watch the show just when it's on tv, alot do through downloading (mostly illegal) and many through dvd sets. Again, I'm talking globally. Smallville is a big hit worldwide and when you sum all the profit from tv sales, dvd sales (which is where the big money is), legal downloading, books, magazines, soundtrack cds and merchandise it's realistic that they gets hundreds of millions of dollars in profits.
It really doesn't matter that it does average numbers on the CW because it's the big picture that matters.
More than Welling's name, it's his face that's more recognizable and associated with the character so it's fair that many ppl that don't watch the show can still associate him with the character. I have many friends that don't watch the show and know who he is, my own brother never watched a Smallville episode or knows his name but when he sees a picture of him mentions that "that's Superman right ?"
I know this won't matter a bit to you and I'm only using it as an example.
Yes, he nor anybody wanted the show to end on it's second season, this can be confirmed through several cast members who said that if he had taken the job then, Smallville would have to end. And I'm talking about people like John Schneider, Annette, Erica, etc.
Tom himself said it in the past.
What I find laughable is how you and others think that an actor almost have to pledge allegiance to a comic book character to show that they're worthy of doing a movie about him or to prove to you that he would want to play it.
He could've done all that and still those same ppl would find excuses for him not be cast in the movie.
It's a never-ending battle, that many fans out here who agree with me have forfitted because they know that ppl like you will want to live with your convictions based on half-truths and lies. I for one like to fight for what I believe in, that's why I still bother in answering to some. Especially because I hate people that are misinformed.
I dont have any problem with fans not wanting Welling or wanting a new cast as long it's for the right reasons (and with those I don't argue or have any problem) and not for crap like "he doesn't want to play Superman, he doesn't want to wear tights" etc.
The 50/50 thing is my own opinion, not fact. I did say why I thought it was 50/50 in my previous post and also why I think it's premature to say he can't be cast because of the SV continuity since we know they want to end it to synch with comics and in fact it may all end with a huge mindwipe to the ppl that know who he is, maybe (here I'm just speculating to make it clear) even by Warner Bros. so that Tom can be in the movie and it not be confusing.
I never said he would definitly accept the offer. In fact I said, if he was offered the role it would have to be a good deal for him since he would be completly typecast by then. He would have to be secure and maybe get other parts/directing deals in the process.
This makes him a good businessman and one that watches for the better good of his family not a hater of Superman. In the reasoning of some fans to prove that is is worty of the character he would have to do it even for free just to satisfy them, and it still wouldn't be enough.
"but to say that i'm misinformed? that's not true because i really dont think welling wants to play the part." - again, your conviction and one based on lies and half-truths. Show me an interview where he says "I don't want to play Superman in a movie" instead of bits from interviews taken out of context where he's talking about the direction of the show and never about a movie.
This is my favourite !: "i think he's terrified to put on the suit because he really doesnt want to put the suit on. "
What kind of reasoning is that ?! That makes absolutly no sense !
But again, it just shows you completly brainwashed you are from the misinformation out there.
I do agree partially with the fact that I don't think he wants to wear the SUPERMAN RETURNS SUIT (and who can blame him, that thing is HORRIBLE) based on his look at comic con when they say that's the suit that's appearing on the premiere. But that is something that has to do with the poor design of that suit and not with the classic suit itself.
Hopefully they will change it by the end of the season.
He didn't go to comic cons mostly because of his comments being taken out of context and after the whole Teen Choice Awards thing and with SR at the time still in the public eye, he knew all the questions would be "Were you ever signed to do SR?" or his opinions in the movie.
He did the Con last year and thought it was alot of fun, SR is no longer in the public eye nor relevant, so he did it. This year they finally asked him about the movie (which they didn't last year) and he answered and was quick to explain that things aren't always as simple as some would like to think and imediatly mentioned that he knows that many like to jump on him because of it or Warner Bros.
So he is very aware of the misinformation that's out there.
I don't make him out to be any saint. Being respectful and humble doesn't make him a saint. Everybody has flaws. But from all accounts (from his friends and collegues) he's a very simple and humble man.
Maybe you would prefer to dump on the whole tv show crew/actors who depend on it's lead star to carry in favour of a big payday for the movie, but there's still some out there that have different values. Doesn't make us saints.
It's not so different as you and me been made the following proposal: would you prefer to have a job doing something you love on a great environment with friends all over the crew (Michael and Kristen were like brothers to Tom, Schneider like a mentor, and all were friends with the crew) or to work for more money but in a strange enviromnment, with a strange director, with a new direction and with a crew full of strangers ?
No doubt he could still make friends in the new production but would he be willing to take the risk ? I know for one I would prefer to work with friends, especially if they depended on me. At least until the show was profitable for syndication which would only be on season 5 (when SR was coming out).
Yes, you are coming off as a Welling hater, one that will only rest when the rest of the fans agree with you so you can be in peace. More importantly, you come off as a Welling hater trying to make himself out to be a somewhat supporter of his so as to be completly bashed.
We don't know if it's an origin story. I seriously doubt it is, SR showed a bit of his origin, SV showed 10 years of origin story and let's face it, everybody knows the origin already.
The most senseful thing is to show him as an established Superman already.
We'll have to wait and see. Maybe he's cast, maybe he's not. Maybe he'll do Superman on tv films maybe he won't.
I'm fine with you not wanting him in the movie. Just don't justify it by saying he doesn't want it or is terrified (which by the way was a line fed to him by the interviewer) of wearing the suit when it's clear when you see that interview that he's talking about not disappointing the high expectations fans have of him and the legacy of the character. He has been adamant that SV needs to have an ending to satisfy the fans that have supported it for 10 years and that it needs to end the right way.
