Here We Go Again Part 3: New Welling As Superman Rumors?

Mwhahaha. Interesting piece of trivia I found on imdb's page for Lois and Clark.

Gerard Christopher auditioned for the role of Clark Kent/Superman, and was chosen by the casting director. However, when the casting director subsequently read Christopher's resume and discovered that he had previously starred as Clark Kent/ Superboy in "Superboy" (1988), he immediately dismissed Christopher. According to Christopher, the man told him, "you've done this already!"

So I guess all the hoopla with Brandon Routh and Tom Welling is not really that unheard of, in the history of Superman incarnations. Gotta admire Gerard Christopher for his balls though.

I'm more surprised that the casting director would choose Christopher for the role before he read his resume. Shouldn't the resume be one of the first things you see when deciding?

i think i read that he left it off his resume and didn't tell them.

Heck I read kevin sorbo tested for clark to for lois and clark.

I asked an unscientific question today about Welling as Supes. I was at my son's soccer game and was talking to another father. He is a comic fan (all comics)and went to NY Comic Con. He is familiar with Smallville. But, rarely watches it. Oh and he really enjoyed Superman Returns. I showed him the recent Welling as Supes manip...He loved it. I asked him if Welling played Superman in a new movie. Would that bother you? Even if it had nothing to do with Smallville. He said he had no problem with him playing Supes.
On a side note...We talked about the Bats, WW & Green Lantern Smallville embargo. How it might confuse the audience. He thought it was the most ridiculous thing in the world. People are smart enough to realize the difference between the movies and tv.

Like I said its only one person. But, I think he represents the average Supes fan who is not a Smallville fan.

It’s going to be a reboot of the franchise…
"In the sense that it doesn’t really owe anything to what’s happened before cinematically".

Again, he says no attachment to the movies....but never says anything about tv shows ;) I wish one of these interviewers would ask him about the show!!!!

As much as sv setting/tom would be more so for us fans of the show. Its best to be a full clean start and start from the bottom up. The studio needs this film to be big and a fresh clean start would help difference it from the past.

Was at a Halloween party the other night. A friend of mine came up to me. He is not a comic fan, a Smallville fan or even a Superman fan. We started talking and he brought up that he saw Smallville (either part of the show or a commercial) the other day and thought of me since I must have mentioned to him that I was a fan. He said that they guy playing Superman doesn't look like a kid anymore. But, looked like Superman. I smiled and told him that this was the last season and they were building to that.
He is the perfect example of the general audience. Someone who is not a fan and has not seen Smallville. Yet, if Welling was to play Superman in a movie. He would accept it without the baggage of the Smallville backstory. But, has seen just enough to see Welling as Superman.

I just hope they make the right calls this time. So much is riding on this film. With all the issues with the copyright and all that. Which I too hope gets settled out. I just want to see a good story, action, well casting and good special effects too.

Exactly, there's alot of ppl who don't follow SV and see and/or associate Welling with Smallville. The baggage stuff is just a crappy excuse for those who don't want him to overlook him.

Again, though... what about the rest of the cast? I think that to say the general audience would accept Welling in the big screen role is also to say that those same people probably wouldn't give a crap whether or not anyone else from the show transitioned over. I am genuinely interested to know if fans would accept Welling even if the film didn't get Durance or any other SV regulars.

This isn't going to be popular here but I have no interest in seeing Welling playing what will most likely be a different version of Clark/Superman with a different cast around him. I like him on the show but I wouldn't go to see a Superman movie (or any other movie) just because of him.

It wouldn't really bother me since Welling as Superman alone is the jackpot. With that said, if Durance were cast as Lois Lane, it would be icing on the cake. :D

I still would love welling in the role. But personally think its best to be a clean slate and start all new. Though we will have to see where things go this time.

Empire Magazine has published a new interview with Zack Snyder in which he discusses his plans for the new Superman movie.

"It's a different story," Snyder said. "I won't say there's a break from the canon or anything like that, but there is definitely an approach that makes you go, 'Okay, that's a way to get at it.'"
He continued: "David is very respectful of the canon and stuff like that. It has its roots in the canon and again, like I say, it has a point of view about who he is. I'm being cryptic, I know, but it's the best I can do."

Snyder also said it was too early to talk about whether his movie would track Superman's early days, but did say that "the internet has no idea what's going on", adding that the rumors of General Zod being the villain of the film are "just wrong".

Well aparently Snyder has confirmed to the News Of The World that after seeing an online campain from fans of Brandon Routh, that he WILL consider Routh for Superman in the new movie.
If this is true, one more reason for me to stick to my guns and help those that aren't afraid to shut up and make their feelings known about wanting Tom to be Superman in this movie. It seems they aren't so immune to online campaigns.

So here we go:

http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2010/11/zack-snyder-confirms-new-super.html

He hasn't yet thought about casting, he reveals, and is unaware of a campaign to get Brandon Routh back in the role, despite a tabloid report that said Snyder acknowledged the 'groundswell' of support for that actor and would reconsider him.

:hehe:

I really like that zack was clear this is a clean start and a fresh approach. I hope he gets a solid cast and has good story/action in his film.

Today something happaned that made me think that Warner isn't immune to fan petitions. For years fans of the cancelled show Veronica Mars that ran only for 3 seasons have been asking online for a movie. nothing like the scope of the fans that have been asking Tom to be cast as Superman and not as newsworthy. Nothing ever really happaned for years and you would think that nothing would ever happen.
Well today on Twitter out of the blue Warner Bros. Pictures twitter account thanked the fans for all their love and requests for the Veronica Mars movie and set up an email account for fans to actually send all their petitions and casting requests.
Now if that happaned for VM and a show that only ran 3 seasons (I'm sorry to all VM fans - this isn't a diss on the show) but doesn't have the international appeal that Smallville has, don't expect me to believe that Warner Bros. is not aware of all the petitions nor is attentive to all the fan demand for Tom to be cast as Superman since 2003.
And if the VM fans managed to win this battle of Warner actually acknowledging their petitions and requests, if we (who want Tom to be cast) continue to fight for it, I truly believe something good will happen. If nothing else, at least for him to be considered or screen test for the part.
I suggest that all of you who are still on the fight, to twit pic the best manips of Tom as Superman and ask for him to be cast to @wbpictures and their facebook page as well as Snyder's twitter and facebook page as well.

well some times petitions work, other times they dont. plus wb has very different plans for superman on film then superman on tv/animation. as much as we sv fans want to see tom as film superman it isnt likely what they want to do.

He's servicable TV actor at best. That's why he won't be cast. Synder will dismiss him because he is simply not a good enough actor.

Routh has more of a chance, but that's only because Routh's chances are slim instead of none.

Regardless, I'd hate to watch a movie that was cast by petition.

Have you seen more recent episodes of Smallville?

I'll admit Tom was a bit rough in spots in early seasons, but he was terrific and showed some real potential early as the Pilot. Personally, I think he's more than reached the promise shown then. He's gotten to be a very good actor.

He's smart and cares about the part and the process, otherwise I don't think he'd still be doing it for this long much less have directed (very well) an episode a year for the past four or five seasons. He's apparently doing two this year, and the show's actually gotten better since he signed on as an executive producer.

I'm not sure anyone else can say that they're as committed to a part and a show as Tom has been for now ten seasons on Smallville.

Maybe he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting the role in the Superman movie, there's a lot more to it than it probably appears, but don't dismiss him out of hand.

He's a far better actor than you think he is, but I'm not sure there's anything at all that I could say that would convince you.

I watched Smallville up to the Season 7 finale, I actually own the first five seasons on DVD. So I was, at obe point at least, a big fan of the show. He's a decent actor but he is not a Hollywood leading man. Other franchise have people like Christian Bale, Tobey McGuire, Ed Norton, Robert Downey JR. He hasn't got the acting chops that those guys have.
