Here We Go Again Part 3: New Welling As Superman Rumors?

actuall routh has very little chance and likely wont be an option. snyder has said this is a new start and routh isnt likely an option and casting isnt even started yet. its more and more likely to be a fresh new cast.
 
I wish there was a Superman TV series that would be a sequel to Smallville and where Clark and Lois are married. Many of the comics stories are now taking place during their marriage. I like what Kurt Busiek did when he tried to make a family out of Clark, Lois, and Chris Kent.

I don't know, he's matured the last few years. His chemistry with Erica as Lois has only gotten better this season and the last. You might want to give the show another try. This season has been the best. Watch Homecoming if you don't watch anything else. It's easily one of the best episodes of the series.

And I could easily see him doing a romantic comedy or even play something heavier. I think he's got the acting chops.

What does that even mean in this day and age?

You know who's on TV nowadays? Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning actors.

Glen Close, Holly Hunter, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Gary Sinise, just to name a few. In fact the trend is for film actors to move to television:

And to flip the argument, some of the most lauded film actors of the last decade actually started out on television. Tom Hanks (Bosom Buddies), George Clooney (Facts of Life, ER), Leonardo DiCaprio (Growing Pains), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun).

Heck all of the rumored Superman candidates are television actors!!

Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Matt Bomer (White Collar)
Henry Cavill (The Tudors)
even Brandon Routh's most high profile stint since Superman Returns has been a guest spot on "Chuck."
 
If you would have seen Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party or Bosum Buddies....would you ever think he would have gone on to win 3 academy awards for Best Actor? Or Johnny Depp from 21 Jump Street to be the most bankable leading star???

Tom did just win the poll for who should be the next Superman in the People Magazine poll.
 
for me i still think casting will probably go like how green lantern's did for hal casting. They offer it to some name(ie green lantern tried for ryan gosling) who passed on the role. Then casting calls/searching probably where they saw tons and tons of unknowns/semi knowns. That gets broken down to top ten like list of those guys. Then someone like a ryan reynolds comes in and scores the role.

True but those guys had years to perfect their acting by doing movies non stop. Christian Bale has been doing it since he was a kid !
Tom's been doing tv for the last 10 years working with different directors and on a very tight schedule that doesn't give time to perfect his performance as a theatrical movie would. He only made 3 movies and was only the leading man on one of those 3 movies, The Fog which was done in record time and Tom had to shoot it at the same time as Smallville so understandably is not one of his best efforts.
Also Father Time makes you mature alot in terms of what experiences you have lived and how that can help you acting wise. Compare the Tom of Season 1 (which I didn't like) to the Tom of season 10. They are worlds apart.
You can do the same exercise with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Leonardo Di Caprio.
Compare the Leo of Titanic to the one on The Departed, Shattered Island or Inception. They are so different acting and mature wise, it's not even funny !
With a really good director, great script and time Tom will give an even better performance than what he gives on Smallville and to me that's saying alot.
And with a bit of luck he may even turn out to be Hollywood's next great movie star. I can see him do all kinds of stuff, action, comedy, romance, thrillers and of course directing which I know is a passion to him.
 
Just because Tom does a nice job on SV doesn't mean he can carry a Hollywood film. I understand the attachment from fans being he has been on SV for 10 seasons, but I can't believe that people actually think he would be able to carry a film as the lead in a supposed to be blockbuster film. I LOVE SV, love it, but I'm realistic. Giving Tom a "great script and director to work with" doesn't equal him becoming a better actor. As stated above he doesn't have those acting chops. If he did wouldn't he be landing other roles and wowing us outside of SV? I'm tired of hearing the lame excuse that he has a busy schedule with SV and can't commit to other things, that's BS if he was that great or good as an actor someone somewhere would have grabbed him for a lead or another role and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He is not a Hollywood lead folks. This franchise with the lawsuit is coming up and is possibly on it's last leg and needs this film to hit big, how could you really want Welling to carry that load?
 
It would be a huge marketing opportunity for them. I can't imagine they'd get a well known actor to play Superman, and I believe, and i know its just my opinion, he is far more entertaining to watch then Routh was. Why not use them if they are wanting to distance themselves from the previous movie? And if they say their story won't trample over what's done in the past, why can't that also apply with Smallville's continuity?

I just don't see how hiring him would hinder anything if thats the case. They could make it seem, in marketing terms, like an event. I don't really have any background, but it seems like a great way to deflect that we are essentially getting another franchise reboot.

Still, I doubt it would happen.

Dozens of actors with little acting chops carry Hollywood movies every week/year. Hell, they did it with Routh. And if you're rooting for an unknown, that weak logic applies to him as well.
You're the one with the lame excuse. Some fail, others succeed either because they're lucky, the movie's that good, because they're the flavor of the month or simply because they were not as bad as thought.
In the 70's a guy called Christopher Reeve was cast as Superman and believe it or not, what you said was written and talked about him. They didn't think he could handle it, didn't have the look (take into account his pictures of the time) or was not a bankable star.
I think he turned out all right.
You can talk drawing power - that I can agree with. Welling is not an A-list actor or possibly a draw WHEN it comes to any other movie. But he IS a big draw when you're talking about Superman (just like Reeve was as he only had box office hits when he did Superman movies), the role he's been associated with for 10 years and like DarkZombieMutt said, they can make an event out of it, even a "to be continued in a theater near you".
Many fans have grown up with Welling and watched him mature as an actor and his Clark as a character. They want to see the next step and watch him as Superman in movies.
Why ? Because he makes them believe. And Superman has always been about who makes you believe. Otherwise, you are only left with a guy in the suit that CAN be entertaining (like Dean Cain) but forgetful once the show/movie ends.
But when you hit lightning in a bottle with a guy that makes you believe (and even does it without wearing a suit) as much as they'll make you try to forget about him (like Warner has with an unprecendented big budget marketing campaign of Routh as Superman) it will never happen and he will be remembered for many years to come like Chris has.

Who said they were looking for a hollywood lead in the 1st place? And if it is an unknown, how is he gonna carry it oh mighty one? Haha. (Who the heck wants a Hollywood lead for Superman?)

A Hollywood lead isn't going to guarantee you anything either way, but you're full of ****, period.

As evidenced by the reactions of fans on these boards, Tom has an extremely avid fanbase.

Hell I'd see it several times even if it stank to high heaven, which I don't think it would with Tom in it and Zack Snyder directing and Christopher Nolan producing.

Tom is well known enough to put butts in the seats and get the film extra press, but isn't well enough known by the general public that he'd drag in the 'baggage' from Smallville.

He's movie star handsome even if he's not yet a movie star and I would think that would at least get him a serious look by the producers and director.

They'd be stupid to not consider him, IMO.

True, there are tons of actors that started on film that solely do film now.

There is another notable one who started in TV, earned Oscars and then went back....

Sally Field.

And there are others that are even bigger stars now that started in TV:

Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman both had parts in Austrailian TV prior to hitting it pretty big in film.

Russell was on several TV shows, even as a kid (his parents were set caterers when he was a youngster) and he's won an Oscar and been nominated several more times on top of that.

Being in TV isn't automatically a death sentence to an actor's feature film hopes.

It just has to be the right actor getting the right part.

Maybe Tom won't get the right roles for him and he'll have to retreat to only directing and producing, but I really think he's good looking enough and talented enough that he'll have some kind of career in film

Hollywood is a business. If producers think Tom will put butts in the seats, and he will (I think the only reason The Fog made money was because Tom was in it, that film was pretty bad), they will put him in front of the camera no matter what the few naysayers think.

I think it's thinking like that is the only reason some terrible actors keep getting parts, but I won't name names. *cough*Sam Worthington *cough*

Although, it's worth mentioning that he's another actor who started in TV.

Major film actors who started in TV (or worked in TV early in their careers) that ended up doing pretty well:

Meg Ryan
Demi Moore
Burt Reynolds
Clint Eastwood
Robert Downey Jr (didn't start in TV, but has made major guest appearances on several shows)
Bruce Willis
Tom Hanks
George Clooney
Leonardo DiCaprio
Gwyneth Paltrow (did a few TV movies early in her career, making a guest shot on Glee this season)
Jennifer Aniston
Gerard Butler
Pierce Brosnan

I could probably find more, those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head...

Actually, RDJr got his start in the cast of SNL in the 1985-86 season.
 
Well sure it would be a great way to market the film with tom and all. But we know the execs are thinking other things. And this is pretty, much there last chance with the character so you can see why they want to do things differently. I as much as I would want tom as supes. I still think it would be best to have a new fresh clean slate cast. So they can build them up and market the film as new different and all that.

Also as speaking of casting there was some new rumors I read. First joe manganiello aka flash tompson from spiderman 1, some other films, and currently in true blood on hbo. Says he has looked into wb about the role. Like he has mentioned he is a big fan and wants to play the role. But also mentioned on his twitter page he is no way in any negitoring deal yet. Personally he has the right look and build for the role. Also isn't a bad actor. Wouldn't mind if he did land the role. I do wish him the luck at least getting chance to test. Claims former wwe wrestler the rock is up for clark kent/superman. Also also curent wwe star john cena. I doubt its true at all. I don't see wb going for them. Sure rock has been growing as an actor. But he and cena are totally not right for the role.

Just saw this over at Superman Homepage

"True Blood" star Joe Manganiello told fans at EyeCon this weekend that he has been in talks with Warner Bros. to play the Man of Steel in the up-coming Superman movie.

On Sunday Manganiello tweeted that negotiations were over, but whether that means he was successful or not remains to be seen.

Manganiello, who has starred in TV shows such as "One Tree Hill", "CSI: NY", and "How I Met Your Mother", also appeared in the first and third "Spider-Man" movies as Flash Thompson. The 33 year old Pennsylvania born actor definitely has the physique and height (6' 5") to pull on the blue tights and cape. Only time will tell whether or not he will win the role.

Spidey I pretty most posted that joe news just a few posts above. Also for some reason the examier link about cena/rock changed aftwr I posted it.
 
If they can transition Star Trek: The Next Generation into films, I don't see why the same can't happen with Smallville if they do the Superman films. :super:
