EXCLUSIVE: The Casting Search For Superman Begins

By NIKKI FINKE AND MIKE FLEMING | Thursday November 18, 2010 @ 3:38pm EST

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros, Chris Nolan and director Zack Snyder have begun to cast a "wide net" to find the next Man of Steel. Insiders tell us the studio is open to creating a star as it reboots the Superman franchise. The actor will likely either be a discovery, or an actor from TV who isn't yet a big star. And he'll be in the age range of 28-32.The studio expects to look at hundreds of young actors before making a decision. Warner Bros is producing with Legendary Pictures. Nolan and David S. Goyer hatched the story, and Goyer is honing his script with Snyder.

While the Batman films have been populated by established stars Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and now Christian Bale, Superman has always lent itself to discoveries. Christopher Reeve was a find, as was Brandon Routh in the Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. Before Routh got the job, Matt Bomer was eyed seriously by almost-directors McG and Brett Ratner. Even on the small screen, George Reeves, Smallville's Tom Welling and Lois & Clark's Dean Cain were discoveries. The lone exception we can recall was the time that Tim Burton tried to put together a Superman film with Nicolas Cage, an effort that failed because the budget was so high. And then Josh Hartnett was courted during the Ratner version (that got scrapped when Singer took over), but Hartnett didn't take the role, even though he stood to potentially make $100 million for three pictures, if all of them had gotten made. The new guy isn't going to get paid near that much.

The Superman search will likely take time to play out, as did the hunt for the new Spider-Man before the job went to Andrew Garfield. There will be inevitable buzz on actors like Armie Hammer, the strapping 6'5" actor who played Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network and who was eyed by the studio to play Batman in a Justice League movie that Mad Max helmer George Miller was poised to direct until the film got scrapped. But Hammer is only 24. The studio could go the TV route with True Blood's Joe Manganiello, who reportedly has said he's being considered and is certainly a strapping 34-year old, or an actor like Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries, who is turning 32 and listed at 5'9 1/2." And let's not forget Jon Hamm, the 39-year old blue-chinned Mad Men star who has long been the subject of Superman speculation, and who has long laughed it off.

Agents who are readying candidates note that hiring an established series regular might not even be possible. The film will likely begin production around next June, and that shooting schedule could wreak havoc with fall prime time schedules. The studio has to meet that production start date because some of the rights are in jeopardy in 2013.

Nolan and his partner Emma Thomas are producing with Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, while co-financier Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull is executive producer.

Well I know this is "cloud talk" at this point but every criteria they've listed there is right in Tom's wheelhouse.

- Actor who is from TV but isnt a big star
- around 28 - 32 years old (yes I know he's 33, but close enough)
- not an established series regular (at least by the time next June rolls around)

Yes and Thank God people can stop throwing his name out there. I love him prolly more thna a man should but he was all wrong for Superman.

was just reading the news a few mins ago. Great to finally have official word casting has began with nolan/snyder. I personally hope it doesnt get to dragged out like spidey/cap castings. Hopefully they will land their clark/supes before the end of the yr. So if the rumor there production date of june is true it would give said actor the proper time to bulk up and all the other needed prep work. Also great to hear they are looking within the 28-32 range. Now i could see it going to someone slightly younger like hammer to someone slightly older like mangiello. Hopefully we will now hear of names testing in the coming weeks. Here's hoping we get a solid clark picked. Cant wait to see how casting goes this time.

I'm relieved to hear they're aiming for 28-32 also. I never criticised Hamm for his acting, as we all know he's a great actor, but I just thought he was all wrong for Superman - height, face, age.

Who knows, if they have Luthor in this one, Hamm might land that role....

I do hope lex has a supporting role. So we can se a proper corp lex in film series. But yes not as main villain. As for casting yup there target age is a good one. I would expect they will probably make the character be 28-30 himself. So they could play with someone a few yrs younger to play older or the other way a few yrs over playing younger. Heck it happen with spidey reboot. But now its good to know casting is happening. Names now should be coming in next few weeks/months. As to who ever is picked I hope they look good, is a good actor. Then hopefully who ever it is will give us fans a good thing to go for and all.

Entertainment Weekly weighs in on Welling's chances for the Superman role:

The new Superman to be 28 to 32, maybe from TV, probably not Jon Hamm
by Adam B. Vary

Last month, when producer Christopher Nolan announced that Zack Snyder would be the director of the new Superman movie, I wildly speculated on ten possible actors for the role, to which our fair readers added a few candidates of their own. Then we whittled the list down to six, y’all voted in a Popwatch poll, and if nothing else, we all learned that Smallville‘s Tom Welling has quite the mobilized army of online fans.

Well, Smallville fans, I’ve got good news, kinda good news and not so good news. According to a Deadline report, Snyder and Nolan have started looking for their man of steel, casting the proverbial wide net for the right actor with the following qualifications: He’s currently on TV (that’s the good news) or more likely someone more-or-less unknown (that’s the not so good news), and he’s anywhere from 28 to 32 years old (that’s the kinda good news, since Welling is 33). While that age range seems a bit narrow for a supposedly wide net, believe you me, that’s pretty much the age range everyone looks in Hollywood.

Still, it does winnow down the field a bit. Jon Hamm, sorry buddy, you are nine kinds of handsome, but you do look your 39 years — in the best way, of course, but no one’s exactly describing you as in your late 20s anymore. Conversely, Armie Hammer, you’ve become rather ubiquitous ever since your breakout turn as the Winkelvi in The Social Network, but at a particularly fresh faced 24 years old, no one’s exactly describing you as in your early 30s.

Other than Welling, meanwhile, this particular news bodes pretty well for White Collar‘s Matthew Bomer (33), The Tudors‘ Henry Cavill (27), and True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello (33). But there’s a reason so many actors who’ve worn the red cape (Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, and yes, Tom Welling) were unknowns when they got the gig — the man’s face is Superman. Batman’s got that striking cowl, Spider-Man’s entire face is covered up, but there’s no hiding for whoever plays Superman, and I imagine any director would want audiences seeing the Man from Krypton and not the Man from That Show They Watch On Their DVR. Which is to say: Sorry, Wellingites, but it’s just as likely that our next Superman’s online fanbase consists of whoever he knows on Facebook.

But that won’t stop us from continuing to wildly speculate, anyway. Given the aforementioned criteria — an actor, 28 to 32 (or, at least, who looks 28 to 32), not widely known, but possibly working in television — who do you think will at least read for Superman who hasn’t been discussed here already?

As much as I would def love wellung to do it. I don't think he would be picked. Its pretty clear nolan/snyder have a different vision for superman and want to clean slate and start fresh. Now if welling ended up being cast great. But I don't think it will happen.

Except for the fact., that Welling's only known for playing Clark Kent and people arleady see him as Superman :supes:

This is where I feel I'm going berserk with the WB bosses. They have pretty much the solutoion right under their noses and yet, they refused to at least make an effort to see a viability of Tom Welling as Superman for the next movie.

Tv actor? 28-32? Seriously? Really? What? TW doesn't fit into this category?

I know they gave the keys to the Superman kingdom to Nolan and buds ( I'm fan myself of Nolan) and Zack Snyder is a competent director but casting is everything and Tom does have the ability the support a franchise. Ten years of Smallville: It's very rare a Tv Show to last that long and as I much as I adore and love Smallville, I do realize sometimes, it was the cast which support the show, not the quality of the writing (yes I'm looking at you, Power, Ageless and Supergirl).

I've come to a point where I just going to wait and see but it's painful to see a wasted opportunity to simple elevate a TV show into a movie franchise with Superman being the household name for the franchise. Not only there have been examples like Sex and City with Sarah Jessica Parker but also it would be a safe bet.

Like Triplet says in her sign, WB movie division is run by idiots.

Sure tom fits what they are looking for. But we git to remember nolan/snyder have a different vision of supes tghey want to tell. And they want to be a fresh clean slate. It sucks as much as tom would be nice. Bit really film series needs a clean start over.

Here is an interesting rumor i was just reading about. I doubt its true though:

Matthew Goode the Frontrunner for ‘Superman’ Reboot
November 21, 2010 by John Villoch
The man fast enough to catch a speeding bullet in ‘Watchmen’ could be the next Superman.
British actor Matthew Goode, who played industrialist Adrian Veidt formerly the superhero Ozymandias in ‘Watchmen’ (2009), is the frontrunner for the title role in Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot, to be directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300).
According to our sources, Snyder wants Goode to play mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and has plans to rely heavily on CGI for The Man of Steel. Essentially this means Superman could be a CG enhanced character, similar to what Warner Bros. is doing with the Green Lantern costume. This would certainly eliminate the need to cast based on the physical stature of Superman.
In ‘Watchmen’ Matthew Goode was a key player (the smartest man in the world) with a carefully manufactured public and private persona. The duality is essential for the role of Clark Kent / Kal-El, Superman’s Kryptonian birth name. Most importantly Goode is the right height at 6 ft 2 in., just an inch shorter than Brandon Routh (Superman Returns).
Goode has experience acting with visual effects and stated in past interviews that he worked well with Zack Snyder’s “enthusiastic” directing style. Snyder has a history of bringing back his actors to work on new projects; Carla Gugino, Abbie Cornish and Gerard Butler have all made two films with the director.
Zack Snyder is currently putting the finishing touches on his female-driven action-adventure ‘Sucker Punch’, slated to open March 25, 2011.
I like the guy, thought he did good in watchmen. But i dont really see him as superman/clark. Also the idea of a cgi superman. What would be the point there. If superman were to be cgi why bother doing a live action film at all right. If that was the idea they might as well just do a cgi film. But i dont see it being true. But we will probably see silly rumors like this to we get official information from wb/snyder/nolan.

Y'know, I kind of hope that news IS true, though I seriously doubt it. Somebody posted a picture of him over yonder...

I know he's a good actor - loved him in Watchmen. He's quite a handsome man as well - totally reminds me of Welling with those big green eyes, and he's got a touch of C. Reeve there too. Welling is my Superman by far, but I wouldn't mind seeing Goode play Superman/Clark Kent and could see him in the roll WAY more than any of the other actors bandied about recently. Of course, I'm sure we'll end up with somebody I will either roll my eyes at :whatever: or want to kill somebody for :cmad: lol.

Meh...

He was okay in Watchmen, but I'm not sure if I saw enough of him to judge his skill. I'm not sure I like the CGI suit idea, though.

It will definitely be interesting how this whole thing turns out.

well the actor is ok, could make for a good clark. But i dont really see him as superman plus i seriously doubt they would make superman a cgi thing. come on what would be the dam point to it. yea superman and/or the suit dont need to be cgi. It works for gl since the suit is a creation of the ring an all. But superman is totally a man, and a real suit. No need for a cgi suit there, minus cgi model for scenes that need to be it cause real actors cant do so or so.

I agree: thinking about it, the CGI suit is the stupidest idea I think I've ever heard. The thing about Superman is that he's the real guy. He's got all these great powers but looks human otherwise. He passes as a human and lives his life like a human would. He's doesn't use any magic or technology to fly or do anything else, so how would them using a CGI suit work?

If they use CGI to add bulk or height to a slim or short guy, it would look so fake. I love Ryan Reynolds and the Green Lantern film looks like fun, but the suit isn't the best thing about that film to be sure.

But for Superman, would it be realistic if after he does the shirt rip he grows three inches and gains 40 pounds?

I think it's a terrible idea. I hope they don't do that. It would be the one thing I could think of that would be worst than the SR suit.

totally there is no need and would be a waste for a cgi suit minus when its need for some big action scene and it is a cgi model for that. But i would hope that would be minium amounts used. I want to see real actor/stunt actor being used this go around. To much looked faked in SR which i hated. As for the gl suit sure it doesnt look as great right now, but i am sure it will look alot better come film release. But that is another topic in itself. Hopefully this news will be shot down soon. Speaking of which does any one know how reliable movienewz.com have been in the past.

Also another thingwe are more then likely going to get many crazy rumors for the film to filming starts up. But hopefully we get things shot down asap so we dont get any bad word for the film. IT doesnt need any bad press to screw things up.

Heavy CGI? Ugh. Anyone remember Donner's goal in making Superman. He wanted the flying to seem so natural that you believe a person could fly. That's why he used all the rigging and such. Too much movie magic would take away from the effects. Seeing the previews for Green Lanterns has actually turned me off from seeing the movie. First was the suit looks terrible and unbelievable. Second, Ryan Reynolds is the wrong actor. He would have been an awesome Flash, not so much for GL.

To those wanting Welling for Supes, perhaps Welling doesn't want to do the job. Welling never wanted to be in the suit. I believe he was too self-conscious of his physique wearing the tights. I think he would be a good actor for the role, but he may not want it or he may be a pita that the director's don't want. We don't know all the details of the behind the scenes.

You must have missed Welling's comments from a few months ago, I think it was at Comic-Con - someone asked him about playing Superman on the big screen and he said he was basically open to the idea, but it was complicated - no doubt a reference to his role in Smallville conflicting with any big screen Superman story.

i still doubt this cgi suit/superman thing is true. IT seems total bs and the site news comes from doesnt look all to reliable to me when i went around looking at other articles and all that. So i dont think we have to worry much. Plus if it was true we would likely hear some of the better known entertainment news sites like deadline, slash film and others report on it and confirming the cgi detail. I would think so, plus come on really what would be the point for superman or just his suit to be cgi and all that. Superman is all one person and one being. He is "real" there is no need for cgi minus powers and scenes requiring a cgi model for parts of said scenes.

As for welling, it would be nice if he was superman. But like routh wb isnt looking at them. If they were they would have signed either already and be done with it. And not even bother with casting calls/tests. But they are going in a new and fresh direction. So we will have a new cast. Plus the film series needs to clean sweep to help it out.

How would folks feel about ryan mcpartlin from chuck. He is in mid 30s, tall, deep voice, good shape. He did try out earlier this yr/late last yr for captain america. Also i believe he did try out in the early 2000s during the ratner/mcg/early singer days for superman. I wouldnt mind if he got to try for a test for superman this time around.

Here is some current photos of him, sorry for large size:
