How does the film hold up?

I think it still holds up very well. After watching Spider-Man 3, I liked this movie even more. I thought they got the swinging in this movie perfectly. Especially when he's chasing after uncle ben's killer. Just barely making it over light poles and long swoops close to the street; just amazing to watch. The action scenes are a little lacking, but I don't mind that much. The GG costume still isn't very good and there is some awkward scene changes, but I still love this movie so much. Sometimes more than Spider-Man 2.

I overwatched this movie in 2002-2003 and after SM2 I just didn't like it much anymore and was really overly-analytical of it.

But now, post-SM3 I've rewatched it seriously for the first time in years and it is a good movie. It is a stronger film than SM3 (which i like, flaws and all) and has the best villain of the three. And I think the events in SM2 and SM3 make it look stronger as it really stands up better as part of a trilogy as does SM3 (while I feel say POTC1 is being tarnished by its sequels).

It is still flawed but to watch it for sheer entertainment for the first time in a long time, it holds up. Maguire is good, Dunst hadn't grown sick of the role yet like in SM2 (she tries again in SM3, but while having a more adult character, seemingly has less to do than in SM1 and SM2) and Dafoe is brilliant as is Robertson.

It is just a good movie that has a great origin and while a cliche second act, it has a great villain and hero dynamic that limps through it with some very entertaining and memorable scenes (the kiss scene will probably become the defining moment of the Spider-Man trilogy/series when all is said and done).

It doesn't hold up to SM2 but it still holds up as solid entertainment and one of the few summer blockbusters of recent times worth rewatching years later.

I watched this and Spider-man 2 last night, and I have to say I miss Willem Defoe's Green Goblin all the more. The man really did throw himself completely into the role. It would be nice if Norman wasn't as dead as we are lead to believe. There's so much potential in exploring the facet of Norman having two split personalities, with the Green Goblin personality being inside of him all along, the performance enhancers actually helping to draw him out, which is why Norman went into seizures after being exposed to it, because Green Goblin was forcibly exerting control over Norman's body. This would also explain why Harry was not as adversely affected like his dad was, because Harry didn't have that darker, fractured personality inside of him like his father did.

It's not as good as Spidey 2, but it's still a good movie. It's alot better than Spidey 3.

the first one will always retain a considerable amount of admiration just simply because it is the origin story.

the first tales in many story chapters are almost always considered the best installments because of this origin phenomenon.

not to mention the fact it deals with actual story arcs within the comics that one can always relate to and relive on the big screen.

I still love the first film. Dafoe was great, the only thing I really hate about the movie is the Goblin armor.
