The Dark Knight Rises How Would You Continue the Story from TDKR? (Spoilers)

The city is mourning the loss of their hero. Blake sees the sadness in his orphans over witnessing what happened that day on the bridge. Although Batman has saved Gotham it doesn't take back what they lost. Someone they believed in and held faith in.

Meanwhile, Gordon with Blake's help start to oversee the construction of holding cells to house the recaptured villains who Bane broke out. Blake does not take on the Batman costume yet, instead opting for a guise very similar to Bruce's pre-Batman. The city doesn't have any clue that this is going on and they keep it that way. Blake is also very adamant about not being Batman at this point so the villains aren't confused. This is someone new.

Meanwhile, a new criminal element rises spearheaded by Black Mask. He threatens the city by mocking that their hero is dead and gone and they have no one to save them.

Blake, having seen this decides that he has to come back and be the symbol that Gotham needs however hesitant about it. Gordon too is hesitant. Blake tells him that he is also, but the city needs hope. He goes to stop a crime as Batman and is caught on camera signaling his return.

Black Mask is taken in by the footage because he knows Batman from the time in-between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT and knows this man couldn't be Batman. He furthers his organization and brainwashes civilians into joining his growing cult (never called the 'false facers') proclaiming that the replacement can't be Batman.

Blake starts to doubt himself. And Alfred, having also seen the footage, returns to the cave where he questions Blake about what he's doing, why he's doing it and if he's ready for what he signed on for. He doesn't give any hints that he knows that Bruce is alive. He just tells him that Bruce was always looking for someone to take up the mantle. Blake tells him that sometimes he is uncertain if he is that guy. Alfred helps to guide him and by the end naturally becomes a sort of surrogate father figure to him (to match this we also see Blake becoming a father figure to the orphans).

With Alfred's and Gordon's help, Blake takes on the mantle of Batman. The city starts to regain it's hope and faith as they see Batman has risen from the ashes to protect them once again. He fights Black Mask in a populated area of Gotham City for everyone to see. He's about to kill him with his fists when he stops. Black Mask asks him why. Blake merely tells him, "I'm Batman." Black Mask mocks him that he never will be.

Blake tells Alfred that for everyone else he'll be the Batman, but to him he can't completely be and needs to do things his own way. He is okay with being Batman's replacement and wants to carve out his own legacy as well. Alfred accepts that and tells him he'll help in any way that he can. Knowing that the mansion is not suitable for the manor because of the orphaned and at risk youth, Blake relocates it to another Wayne estate similar to the penthouse.

Gordon, with the city seeing Batman's return, lights the bat-symbol up into the sky. Bruce, with Salina, sees the inauguration of lighting it up and smiles knowing that Blake is finally ready.

Plus - one of the at risk children? Jason Todd. Along the way he becomes more and more suspicious of Blake and Blake notices this and ultimately this is why he relocates the batcave out of the mansion. However, the sequel will see the repercussions of this.

In the finale (of the Blake trilogy) Bruce Wayne will return just like he did in the comics. And for those who didn't catch on, yes - a lot of the above is inspired by Dick Grayson's Batman arc. I really think they have a lot going for them, and like Batman Year One being Batman Begins & Knightfall and No Man's Land being The Dark Knight Rises, this should be heavily comics inspired with a real world grounding in it.

Many will be tempted to have Bruce come in earlier, but I think that is way too much. You need time to acclimate to Blake taking on the mantle. Bruce will appear somewhat in a sequel and definitively in the final chapter. In the final chapter, Blake will become Nightwing, Todd will become Robin, and Bruce will become a Batman who acts only when it is essential leaving most of it up to his younger proteges who he has become more of a mentor of - imagine a younger Batman Beyond kind of Bruce Wayne and you've got it.

Also the plot should in some way reflect the audience adjusting to Blake in the costume. Thus, having the film be about that adjustment - it works. Also going along with the christ-like allegories from the past that people pointed out to... resurrection. Every time I see that bus filled with children chanting "Batman!" I don't see them as being able to really understand Batman dying - to them it's still a hard tragedy. Because what Batman has meant for them has gone. They need someone. And that would serve as Blake's main motivator. He is their champion just like Bruce was to him.

Basically, JUST REPEAT WHAT THE COMICS DID - BUT DIFFERENT.

Just like...

BATMAN BEGINS - BATMAN YEAR ONE, THE MAN WHO FALLS.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - KNIGHTFALL, BATMAN: NO MAN'S LAND.

For those claiming "it ruins retirement" for Bruce to be brought back like that in the end. Not really. I'd still see him with Salina, living peacefully with Alfred, and enjoying himself from time to time like his 'good old days' which by that point he would start to miss. In a degree, he'd be like an Alfred who can really help them solve things, be proactive, and once in a while do field work. To me, that's still a retirement and true to Batman all the way around. I can't see him forever hanging up the cape so to speak, but rather stepping back mostly to leave it to the younger generation to continue his legacy. I didn't see Bruce as anything but really 'retired' in Batman Beyond.

Also, as said, I definitely agree with those who have said bringing Bruce back immediately is the wrong way to go. One scene at the end of the sequel, perhaps two in the second sequel, then bring him back for everything to come full circle in the end of the second trilogy. Or one scene in the sequel, none in the second sequel, then his return in the end of the second act of the final sequel. The focus should instead be on Blake and Gotham and legacy. The way Blake, the mansion, and the boy's home have been set up? It definitely lends itself to a younger orphaned or at-risk Robin stumbling upon Blake's secret. Nolan left us with A LOT.

If that were to happen they should give Blake-Bats the ellipse bat symbol on the chest. He can make his own mark by changing the costume. I'm not a fan of the ellipse, but I think that would be fitting.

Maybe someone should do a fan-comic or something.

We shouldn't continue it. The only real way to do it would be The Dark Knight Returns, but this film already used many elements of it and would make it a rehash. I mean, who wants to see Blake as Batman/spin-off Batman hero? That'd be like making Mutt the hero in the Indiana Jones series after KotCS. People don't want that. They want Batman.
I agree. I would love to see a Catwoman prequel, though. During this time Bruce is away in Wayne Manor with his cane and beard, so that's the way around that issue. I'm sure they could make it work plot wise, but I won't be holding my breath.

Just start fresh.

Technically you could do something with The Return of Bruce Wayne and Batman, Inc if you were really going to make it a return movie.

I like the idea of Bruce and Selina having a daughter in Helena.

It'd just be that instead of multiple Batmen, Bruce would be expanding the Bat Family while away. Taking on proteges and what have you.

I think the interesting thing about the way Rises ended is that Bruce found happiness... but he found it with a kindred spirit. Another crusader for the downtrodden(it just so happened she was one of the downtrodden) who felt the need to don a costume. Even though she wanted a clean slate, that aspect of her psyche that created Catwoman isn't going to leave just as that aspect of Bruce's psyche that created Batman is never really shown to have left. It's entirely possible that they couldn't contain that element forever and be left feeling inauthentic. So when the call comes out, they are needed and they resurface.

Come on... I want the truth right now!!! Who is a little disappointed we didn't get to see JGL in a suit!! Even though it would be a bit cheesy but I always felt that he could be a brilliant batman... Just wanted to see how he would look in the suit

I wouldn't. It was a pretty awesome end. It's kinda nice to see Batman get a happy ending for once.

I'm more than happy to imagine what he'll become, I didn't need to see anything. It was more the idea. The vibe Nolan is sending is that one way or another, the torch has been passed and there is a legacy. The legacy of Batman with his statue, and the ongoing legacy of what Blake will apparently do.

Even with 2 crusaders, it is the same movie. Heroes come out of retirement because a disaster so great is coming to the city, that it needs them. It's the same movie, only now Catwoman is coming out of retirement as well. I think any attempt to keep the story going won't work. Just let the series end.

I would continue with Blake becoming robin and done in a serious tone like batman begins and he is gordons new right hand man like batman was. Blake learns to fight through a program bruce designed based on his training which would explain blake in the long run learning to fight. Maybe even have alfred mentor him as well or someone else. Robin gets overwhelmed by newly freed mob and new villians riddler, deathstroke and penguin who is falsely running to clean up the city in an attempt to control it and succeed where bane and joker failed. Robin gets overwhelmed along with gordon and convince batman to comeback and help even the odds. Batman refuses until deathstroke learns he is alive and assasinates cat woman forcing batman back into the game.

The Nolan series is done. The ending is best left to the interpretation of the viewer.

Clean slate next go around.
As much as I want to continue the Nolan series I think a redo is best. Mostly because we get the Joker and Two Face back.

Loved the Nolan series but killing off Dent, Talia and Ras kind of PO's me.

I love how so many of you want a man who's only 5' 10" to be a new Batman. He's also got zero training and doesn't seem to have an intimidating bone in his body.

Sorry, but there's going to be a new Batman. It's going to be the ONLY true Batman, Bruce Wayne. And it's going to be in a reboot (or Justice League) film, and he won't be played by JGL.

It's not a question of what we want; it's a matter of what Nolan was heavily implying and practically setting up.

Robin John Blake is actually John Paul Valley, who takes over as Az-Bat, goes totally bat**** insane and Bruce has to come back and stop him.

Sounds awful, but I just wish someone had considered putting in Valley.

I want a continuation because I am getting really tired of all these stupid reboots. Enough with them, we got a decent cast and characters and a good set up going, lets keep this moving forward.

I don't feel a need to see this continue. However, if they really feel a need to continue Nolan's Batman, they should just take a page from Smallville and have it continue in comic book form.

Put a genuinely good writer on it, and just do that, I guess.

But as a second trilogy? No thanks. I loved the ending for what it meant for Bruce's legacy and his journey. However, the idea of having someone other Bruce Wayne under the cowl is just "ehh" to me. Dick Grayson did an admirable job, but I stuck by because I love Grayson. If it was anyone else, I wouldn't have picked up anything from that run.

A Selina Kyle spin off movie. Let's do it.

I highly, highly doubt Nolan is done. Especially with that ending?? Come on that was like a Robin teaser/origin. Soooo sick of reboots thats all we get!! Why stop when we've found people that can make good superhero movies!! My guess is we will get a catwoman movie(s) by Jonathan Nolan, and robin/nightwing ones. Then 5-10 years after we those and the man of steel we get the best comic book adaptation called the dark knight returns where Nolan could return & bale is an old enough guy to be Bruce. As for Anne Hathaway make up should be good enough. And someone would have to play joker anyway since he's old too

No more Batman movies. There have been enough.

Focus on other DC characters.

I'd like a Batman TV series though

I loved TDKR's ending (sometimes I feel this is a minority opinion here), but I think it's best just to leave it be where it is.

Nolan gave it a conclusion where Bruce Wayne has closure but the Batman symbol and legend can live on.

I don't really want Blake or Selina spin-offs.

I wouldn't . While I wasn't crazy about TDKR it did tie everything up, and BB and TDK are two of the best comic films ever made. I really have no desire to see a Robin/ Terry McGuinnes/ or John Blake Batman film in the Nolanverse. Its over.

Any reboot needs to move miles away from the Nolan films and do its own thing , with its own tone and vison. My hope is that the next director doesn't pull an ASM/ Marc Webb and stay largely within the box of the previous directors style and storytelling points.

I don't want them to continue the story. It was a great ending to a fantastic trilogy for a my favorite fictional character of all time.

BUT, in the hypothetical world which this thread posits: *Spoilers for TDKR follow*

John Blake would begin his career as the Batman without the support system that helped Bruce Wayne create the legend. Working (and mostly living) from the cave while helping run the children's home in the manor above during the day, Blake would be getting by as Batman using the old tools and weapons available. His only ally is Commissioner Gordon, who knows his identity and serves as much as an Alfred role as a traditional Gordon one. Blake also strikes up an interesting relationship with a reporter doing a piece about the boys home and the Wayne legacy, Vicki Vale. It's through this plot thread we are introduced to Oswald Cobblepot, the heir to a family that he claims was destroyed by the Waynes and seeks to use his wealth and criminal ties to destroy their legacy in return, starting with the shuttering of the children's home.At the same time, more of a detective than Bruce was, Blake's Batman catches the attention of criminal who's uncontrollable urge to confess leads him to mark his genius capers with riddles. It would continue on themes from the previous trilogy (legacy, sins of the father and all that) while also letting Blake blaze a new path as a different kind of Batman. Maybe he slims down the suit, makes it his own, could even be an opportunity for the yellow oval to appear.

In a second film I would do Mr. Freeze and a third possibly the return of the Joker.

I like reboots when it comes to comic films. It makes them kinda like comics. A creative team comes on, does their thing, then a new team comes on and does something different. While I certainly would love to see Nolan come back and do more, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing an exciting new filmmaker take the reigns and do something completely different. If they gave it Guillermo del Toro, for example, I'd never stop cumming.

I have done an update on my previous ideas of where i would like this to go .

I would like another Trilogy with John Blake taking up the mantle of NIGHTWING.

With 2 films I am going to be original and call Nightwing and Nightwing 2 lol then the final movie titled The Dark Knight Returns.

Please see below and comment on your views on this or suggestions.

Nightwing.

Main Villan Victor Zsaz, (Still at large after his brief appearance in Batman Begins)

Appearances from the Casino owning Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot and from Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel.

Some small references too Edward Nigma/Riddler.

Victor Zsaz is still going about is serial killing antics.
John Blake/Nightwing uses Copplepot for information as he spends time around the Gotham Cities crime family as his Casino is a Hot Spot for the Gotham City Underworld.

Somewhere during the film something along these lines can be mentioned. Obviously with Nightwing Rather than Batman.

“In 2005, a new interpretation of the Riddler debuted in The Batman episode "Riddled" voiced by Robert Englund. This version exhibits a Gothic appearance, and is served by henchmen called Riddlemen. The episode "Riddler's Revenge," reveals that Nygma and his partner Julie worked at a university on a device to enhance the human brain. Nygma was approached by a man named Gorman who offered to buy the rights to the invention, but Nygma refused. After the device malfunctioned at a demonstration, Nygma accused Gorman of sabotage. Batman foils Nygma's attempted murder of Gorman, and by the episode "Riddled", Nygma has adopted his Riddler persona “

Nightwing 2.
Main Villan The Ridder (Not called the Riddler though. Just use his real name..)

Appearance from Oswald Copplepot. In a more villainous role than previous film but nothing Nightwing can’t handle.

Dr Harleen Quinzell appearance at the end.

(Nigma now being full on Riddler is out to capture Nightwing and reval his true identity to the world, Speculating that it is many people. I think he finds out by capturing Nightwing as he did Batman in the three-part Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight storyline "The Primal Riddle", written by Steve Englehart, the Riddler engineers one of his greatest deathtraps: Batman is thrown into a narrow pit that is slowly filling up with water. The walls are electrically wired, and a set of bumpers are the only thing that prevents the water from touching the walls and causing Batman to die by electrocution. The only options Batman appears to have are death by electrocution and death by drowning, but as always, Batman manages to tamper with the trap's design and develop a route of escape.

Obviously Nightwing Escapes and stops Riddler from revealing his True Identity.
Towards the End have a scene with Harley Quinn talking about the Joker.

The Dark Knight Returns,

Main Villan The Joker

Support Villan Harley Quinn

Appearances by Firefly (Garfield Lynns)

Joker and Harley Quinn don’t believe Batman is dead. They torment the Wayne Manor Orphanage persuading one of the older orphans to join them– enter Firefly (Garfield Lynns) is an orphan who became a pyromaniac, developing a fireproof suit with a flamethrower to further pursue his "hobby." He was originally known as a cunning criminal who invented numerous weapons that involve light to commit crimes with.

Nightwing Fails in his attempt to stop them and is captured and put on show to try and Lure Batman out of hiding.

This works the older Batman turns up and He and Nightwing team up to take down Joker and his pals.

Any idea that brings back Bruce Wayne completely renders TDKR null and void. Bruce is done, he's not coming back.

Come on... I want the truth right now!!! Who is a little disappointed we didn't get to see JGL in a suit!! Even though it would be a bit cheesy but I always felt that he could be a brilliant batman... Just wanted to see how he would look in the suit

Would've been cool, no doubt, but it also would've threw me off a bit. Obviously he's inches smaller and pounds lighter, there's no way he could fit any of Wayne's suits. Definitely wouldn't mind a continuation with Blake as some variation of Nightwing though.

I would prefer a reboot completley. I like the fact the ending we have, is we know if for whatever reason Gotham needs him, there is a Batman who can return. But that makes the ending great, even on leaving Bruce ensures there is always a protector who can take the mantle.

The thing though that would interest me though would be how Blake would become trained to become the Bat.
