Hulk at the Comin-Con

I have to agree with Spaghetti. Living here in Switzerland I rarely mention that I like comic books and when I do I feel almost embarrassed. It is considerred childish here.

nah, he didnt seem eager at all and i didn't buy his whole 'i was a marvel kid' routine.

No actual marvel kid would be ashamed to tell their closest and dearest that they are going to be in and writing a film about a character they grew up with and loved.

it all seemed somewhat staged. I might give him he would be slightly overwhelmed by this sort of thing since he had never done it before but this is a world class actor here and it looked like it was his first acting gig.

he didn't once convince me that he was going to sell me the hulk we all deserved, especially with those references to it being fairly heavily based off the tv show with tidbits from the comics.

I also understand what he meant about origins and he happened to blankett most superhero movies although quite a few have neglected to tell origin tales.

superman returns
x-men
blade
daredevil (at least it wasn't chronologically placed)
elektra (although this could have been perceived to be done in daredevil)
hellboy
sin city
batman 89

but he tarnished them all with similar brushes.

for a marvel boy, he didn't sell it to me that he knew what was what.

I hope he proves me wrongly.

Wow! You have a harsh sense of snap judgement. Wih an audience full of people like you, can you understand why he seemed nervous now?

It's not info I readily volunteer to people either. I would have loved to have flown out to comic con, but I didn't want to go by myself, and I know anyone I would have asked to join would have looked at me sideways and said " You want to take a trip to go to what?!!"

And Norton probably runs with lots of high brow "Ar-tist" who might be critical of him doing this. But hopefully with someone like him in the role it will elevate the medium....especially if the movie is good!

Well I think the high praise and success of Batman Begins with such an A list cast really made it easier to get these type of actors.

Honestly, I think the first Hulk film was the one that really tried to push that boundary with an Art House director and quality cast and taking itself so seriously...maybe a little too much. It was fans and the general public that blasted it, not the art crowd.

I have a hard time just convincing my GF that these movies can be good. And anytime comics come up I end up defending the medium. It is just not well respected here in Europe.

Couldn't have said it better myself, though I hate his stuff moreso than the man. I'm one of the few that is incredibly doubtful that it's 100% the studio's fault that his scripts are horrid.

I TOTALLY agree, the studio didnt right the terrible lines in X3 did it?

Hulk didn't exactly have an A list cast though.

I'd say Connolly was A-List at the time, she had only recently won an oscar remember. Bana was getting praise for his work in Chopper and BHD and Nick Nolte and Sam Elliot are two very accomplished actors.

Connolly is B list at best. Bana was up and coming and not even close to A list. Nolte is washed up...lets face it. But this is a whole nother conversation im not getting into this one lol.

Very true, in France or in Ireland where i live now, reading comics, especially following it toroughly, is kinda like a geek gimmick...
not something a "normal" person would do...
knowing about the character, yeah it's alright, but knowing that in issue #xxx this happened because of issue #yyy, and you get people looking at you like: "yeah yeah, you're that kind aren't you" :hyper:

Sometime i feel bad saying to my G/F that i've spent my night reading comics or being on this board...:whatever:, instead of i don't know, playing a MMORPG ;)

I am actually a Marvel Kid and sometimes I'm a little ashamed to tell that my favorite character is The Incredible Hulk, because many people believes that is just kid stuff.
well i guess we are all greatful you aren't writing the screenplay or acting in this film

;)

This isn't the case. This is an accomplished actor that is supposed to already have the background knowledge into the character since he grew up with him.

If that's the case, he knows what he wants and he knows potentially what the kids are going to expect from this film as well as the other long time fans. He should be flowing with confidence in what he wants to deliver since he can realise what sort of film can keep everyone or the majority of people happy.

I didn't get that from his interview and it was almost like he was avoiding answering some of the questions to try and not upset people.

If he was a hulk fan, he could have easily said that he didn't believe telling an origin was important to the bruce banner character (because i feel it's more interesting for the rick jones character) and that if it felt like it needed re-telling it would be done at a different stage. Instead he came across as trying to be apologetic for not taking the route 'all other' films of this genre are taking (even though that isn't the case).

Look at it this way, if you had to give this guy a couple of hundred million to make this work, would you trust him based on those panel tapes. He sounded more embarassed to be up there than anything.

Personally i want someone up there that is so psyched about the film and gives you the impression they know what they are doing so that if they said the hulk was going to be pink, you'd follow them 100%.

he gave the impression it might be a good film if you come in with an open mind, that's not good enough for me, especially without any footage to reassure me.

meh

remember that Edward Norton is a very reserved guy... and I also think he is not very practical with these type of things(conventions etc.)

I've taken that into consideration, even in my very first post about him though.

His personality does not indicate having a hyper persona. So you're not going to get cart wheels from him, especially at a convention. It as you know is a panel discussion, not a show per se. He was not ducking any questions, but held back enough to keep alittle for our imaginations.

It was just a bad piece of writing and directing.

A little statement: being Hispanic, I can say through my own observation that past 7 PM most Spanish stations in North and South America become devoted to the airing of soap operas that get treated with the reverence of Shakespeare. Believe me when I say there is much more out there to be ashamed over than the collection of comic books or the enjoyment of them.

So is this officially a reboot now?

It's just not a long winded origin story. There's no need for that. I really liked how the 1st Blade film kicked off and told the origin on the way and it worked perfectly...and that character's origin was pretty much unknown to the World. The Hulk's origin is known by pretty much...everyone to some extent.
