*this is just my honest opinion don´t beat me*
Saw it and have to say I´m dissapointed (yes I´m a Star Trek fan). While the visuals were fantastic I think most of the spoof elements were unnacesary and stupid (no I have no Problems making fun of Kirk, but it was just stupid and looked like it belonged into a kids movie).

Also the story was all over the place. While the beginning of the movie had potential Nero and old Spock had too little screentime just like the Enterprise. Now the action was really weak there was just no tension in the end battle and it was over way to fast. I liked most of the characters though Chekov was a really nice surprise, McCoy was really good, Nero and Uhura were also pretty good, Kirk was kind of a mixed bag while young Spock was pretty weak.

Finally I have to say that i was prepared for changes but this movie is basically a full reboot not a sequel and not even old Spock can change that since we don´t actually see where he actually comes from (at least not in the movie) all we know is that he is a Spock from the Future which could also be the future in the story of this movie.

It is a reboot. Young Spock even echoes that "whatever our lives were in that time-line our destinies have now changed". I'm sure they will want to keep the essence of the Star Trek Universe and it's characters in check, but it's fair to say that the Enterprise will have a complete new life and possibly a new fate.

As far as Nero's screentime, he is the antagonist, but this movie is about the Enterprise crew coming into their own, Nero is just there as a catalyst. Most origin movies have that villain that's somewhat one-dimensional and there just to be fodder during the final battle.

agreed, Nero is a good villain, like a Ra's Al ghul in BB but he's not THE villain ! There's room for a Star Trek "Joker" in the sequel ......:hoboj:

Just got back from seeing it and thought it was great. The effects are great, I've never really seen Shatner as Kirk so I'm not gonna compare or anything but Pine is great too. I enjoyed the story and seeing Kirk rise to captain. One criticism I do have is, based on trailers, I thought the end space battle would be bigger than it was, so it felt like it ended fairly quickly but that's really just a nit pick. It's a cool, fun movie.

No Khan. I'm sick of people saying they looked to Khan for inspriation or people on here wanting Khan for another film.

Can we have one ST film that doesn't always acknowledge Khan and let it do its own thing?

No Khan! I haven't seen any of the movies, and even I know that.

Just got back from a secret showing (it really opens tomorrow here in Sweden) and I liked this, probably a lot, but it really needs to cool down for me, maybe I need to watch it again. A lot of details bothered/distracted me, like differences from the "regular" Star Trek, or just weird scientific details... like... come on... a supernova threatened the entire galaxy? How? BS. Feels like they could've just made up some kind of "spacetime anomaly" instead.

All of these details just sort of bubbled around in my head and I couldn't really process the film, but it looked great, the characters were awesome, and all that stuff... definitely. Maybe they could've shown some more of the time in starfleet. Introduced beaming technology and all that stuff through that... after all, this is supposed to be for the general audience.

I think the score could've been more reminiscent of the sound of "regular" Star Trek. It just didn't sound very trek-like to me.

Ah well, can't really make a structured post, so I think I'll stop... soon. It's definitely not bad... and I think it will be popular. That is all.

my review from my site.

I'm not a Star Trek fan, I'm more of a Star Wars guy. I grew up watching, Next Generation, but that was along time ago. Recently I watched Wraith Of khan and First Contact, which I found to be entertaining films, but that was never enough to drag me into the franchise. As for the franchise itself, Nemesis performed poorly at the Box Office, followed by the latest TV series, Enterprise, which was cancelled. At this point something new needed to be done and this is where J.J Abrams stepped in. When I heard that the film would focus on a younger Kirk and Spock, I thought this wasn't going to work, this is stepping backwards, not forwards. I learnt that sometimes the past can help reshape the future, the trailer proved this to me. Everything after that was positive and I was hooked.

Plot

The film takes a look at a younger crew from the USS Enterprise, but focuses on the contrasts between, James T. Kirk(Chris Pine) and Spock(Zachary Quinto). Kirk grows up as the wild child, while Spock has been disciplined since birth. Both of them must learn to work together as a Romulan ship from the future lead by Nero(Eric Bana) plans to destroy Earth.

The Good

I have no idea where to start because there is so much to this film that I loved. I'll start by giving major props to the cast, that didn't repeat what the original cast did. Instead they bring new elements to the characters. Pine, I felt had the hardest job because let's face it, William Shatner is Kirk, both character and actor have become cemented into pop culture. Pine, nailed the role, this dude ****ing rocked as Kirk. Not once did I think of Shatner while watching his performance, and to me, that was VERY important. Quinto also did a damn good job at taking over the roll of Spock. It was interesting to see that character dealing with his emotions and human half. At no point did I feel like the characters were placed in this film for the sake of it, each character serves a purpose and each actor fills the role perfectly.

The main problem with prequels are, you know what happens to each character, you know their faith, which leaves no room for a sense of danger and lessens the barrier of possibilities. Here, a new timeline is created and I loved how it was executed with just a few simple lines that left me satisfied.

Everything in this film looked beautiful, and I mean everything, from the sets to how space itself looked. The one thing I got to mention is, how the ships moved. In all of the incarnations of Star Trek, everything seemed to move in a straight line perfectly, but in this Star Trek, you really feel these ships movements throughout space.

I really didn't want this film to end. The adventure was so big and something interesting was always going on. Unlike Star Trek before, which felt slow and dragged out a lot, this film just entertains without stopping.

The Bad

I wouldn't say Nero is any sort of great villain that anyone would really remember. He is there to pushed the plot, but I never found him to be interesting. Bana did a great job, but Nero just felt like another run of the mill villain.

I really enjoyed Leonard Nimoy, reprising the role as future Spock, but I felt like the character overstayed his welcome for a bit. I was like ''Ok cool, you served your purpose, now stop hanging around''.

Overall

Forget about the perception you have of Star Trek, this is fresh, new, exciting, fun and I dare say MUCH better then anything Star Wars has done in the past 10 years.

I agree with the criticisms on Nero.

I don't think he comes off like an angry human or whatever. Its just that yes, Nero is more of a villain that just moves the plot forward.

not x-men or spidey

This is awesome:

Nimoy's take on Uhura and Spock being a couple:

Nimoy:

Frankly, I was extremely jealous of his scenes with Zoe Saldana, and I think it’s totally unfair that I never got to do that. I will never forgive the writers and the director, for having put me in this position, to have to be watching that, rather than participating.

I enjoyed it. But again, JJ Abrams proves that he is nothing more than a TV director. Very pedestrian director, a generic plot just there to introduce characters.

Chekov was annoying as hell.

At least Abrams didn't put one of his stupid musical montages at the end in. Those are terrible.

Well aside from Abrams just ripping off all his gimmicks from Alias and putting them in MI:3.

FYI,

Trek at 93% right now at RT. That's basically Iron Man/Spider-man 2 levels.

Just got back, not gonna focus on details, but I really liked it. Very much Star Trek, just very "flashy", and the FX and action we're as top notch as any Star Trek fan should want (no more "boring" comparisons). I had a few issues (it moved very fast, very little time to digest character development, too much lens flare fx, didn't explain why Nero's ship was so funky) but I think given audience reaction it is gonna be a big Mutant Killing hit.

Lightning, PLEASE put up a poll...

Loved the movie. They nailed a lot of it, it seems J.J. "got" it. Quinto did a great job same with Pine, actually I felt the whole cast was perfectly selected. The humor was really good.

Excellent film. I've never been a Trekker, or a Trekkie. Just a casual Trek watcher. I really enjoyed the performances, but I especially want to name Karl Urban. Freakin' awesome McCoy. I'll definitely pick this up on Blu-ray.

Best Star Trek movie ever. And I know that the year is still young, but this could potentially be the best 2009 movie as far as I am personally concerned.

Gonna catch it again tonight. And tomorrow. And the day after...
