My Star Trek Review:
I'd like to start off by saying I am old fan of the series but lost interest around the time Voyager was finishing. Star Trek was getting old for me as I was maturing into an adult and it seemed to have served it purpose. I admit that there were curtain expectations for this new movie as I heard it was a fresh new look and attitude, so I wondered, can Star Trek serve me once again?
Rather then recite what everyone has said and will say about the look I'll make a point that JJ did the right thing in updating the look of everything, even the stylized way it was shot was the right thing to do. Star Trek had to look different otherwise it wouldn't stand out so much from the others. This is a big plus for me. The characters were a lot of fun to watch, they all had a great deal of energy in their performances, they all had a place in the story so it didn't feel like they were just thrown in there just for their name sake. I loved Urban's McCoy, and I think DeForest would have loved him as well, it was spot on. Kirk was Kirk minus the Shatner-esk delivery, he was believeable and drew from the essence that was Kirk, I loved Pines attitude. Spock was always going to be a hard one to pull off, how do you pull off a charater with no emotions yet connect with the audience. Consiquence was the key here, which is exactly happened. He lost so much yet put on a brave face. Lucky for that human half of him otherwise he would have been a bore. That "young" factor will help drive the character in the next movie, but they will need to concentrate on his freindship with Kirk and McCoy for his character to go anywhere next time. I wont go into the other charaters, but helped drive the story in equal length and drew from their orginal charater, and none of them (Pavel included) annoyed me. Nero the bad guy, wasn't the greatest of enemies, he was the typical revenge plot device. I understand that this was more about establishing the Enterprise crew and their destiny, but his dynamic only tagged along, it didn't create that fear factor that a good villian should have. Oh and there is one more character worth mentioning and thats the USS Enterprise NCC 1701, my god she is a sexy ship, her elegance once again graces the universe.
The great thing about this new Trek is that Abrams wasn't afraid to give us concequence and shock. Some of the events that took place were indeed quite shocking not only for a general audience but for fans as well. The plot was exciting yet simple, it found the right amount of balance for a beginnings story with plenty of action, tasteful humor, and strong characters, well paced out. It never felt rushed or forced anywere accept for the Ice Planet scenes with Scotty. Sure he needed to be introduced but it felt like a very brief interlude from the story itself. If a little more time was spent with Old Spock, Kirk, and Scotty it may have eased it a little, however I understand why they were in such a rush to get off the Planet and back on the Enterprise. One major gripe I have is the lack of thought provoking story, Trek has always been a technical series, it gave us something to think hard about which helped give the story more depth. I know they needed to change the image of the franchise, but that doesn't mean dumb it down for us. The final battle is always something to look forward to in a Trek movie, this one was very pretty both with the space battle and onboard the Narada with Kirk and Spock fighting the Romulans. I can't wait to see an all-out space battle with Federation starships and Klingon battle cruisers, that will be a sight to behold.
All in all, this was what the new Star Trek needed to be, bold, exciting, amazing effects, but most importantly a lot of fun. If the villian was stronger and the plot was more thought provoking it would have been perfect, however i still consider this one of the best Trek movies ever, it served its purpose for me. I can't wait to see what Abrams does with the next one. Star Trek is back.
8.5/10
