I wish his death was more epic. Going down with his ship or something...like his dad in the reboot. I wish he hadn't died at all, and just retired in the future.

If you find early printings of the novelization...they still have the back shooting in them. It was changed in later printings.

That's what my parents have, because the one I read had the back shooting.

I have the audio drama for that! John DeLancie's voice i awesome!!:hehe:

the last movie killed the series...its like not liking Batman Begins and asking for a continuation from Batman and Robin.

an alternate reality doesnt erase the original reality...its another reality alongside the original one

Yeah.

The problem with the later Star Trek movies and the later Bond films (post-GoldenEye) wasn't really the cast but the fact they the filmmakers/studio execs were losing touch on what made these series so great in the first place. The later movies became..easy money and that was it, and it they were no long relevant to people outside of the fanbase.

Any links to some disgruntled trekkie threads? I'm actually very curious to see what their complaints are as I'm a huge fan of the movie despite having very limited knowledge or interest in the franchise beforehand.

So I saw Star Trek yesterday.

I had lots of fun. Its really a great adventure! I was particularily impresses with Zachary Quinto as Spock...he really nailed it down and it was cool seeing 'future' spock in the film (I did catch up a little on the series before watching the film.)

The action sequences were great and the comedy was good too. Not too much and not too little....and not corny (the swollen hands got big laughs at my theater :hehe: ). Some of the SFX were iffy but some were really impressive. Such as the scene where spock takes down the drill (that was really awesome and I loved the camera angles and everything  )

One of my disappointments was the films score. It wasn't a bad score but I was expecting something more epic. For instance the two orchestral songs from the trailers were just amazingly well done and wish the theme was something more like that.
I also think Nero was somewhat lacking as a villain. To me he wasn't menacing enough and he just came across as a bitter guy who wants revenge (yes...I know that IS what he was suppose to be but still I wanted more.)

By the way I was kind of shocked to find out that...
Spock and Uhura are a couple. I thought it would be captaine Kirk and Uhura. I haven't finished Season 1 of Star trek yet, but aren't Kirk and Uhura a couple in the show? Are they just setting up a love triangle for the sequels?

Anyway I had fun. Its a good summer movie. 8.5/10

Kirk and Uhura were never a couple in the original tv show. However it was hinted (but never expanded on) that Uhura was attracted to Spock.

Oh thanks. I always assumed it was Kirk and Uhura....especially after seeing a Star Trek documentary showing how Uhura and Kirk shared the first interracial kiss on TV.

So hopefully we won't be getting the overdone 'love triangle' for Star Trek 2

theres a couple at Star Trek Online boards...alot of it was stupid nitpicks like why did the red shirt die

Just watched the new Star Trek film and honestly, it was great, this is coming from someone who always found Star Trek boring. I was really impressed with how J.J. Abrams was able to update the world of Star Trek and not deviate from the original source material. This movie is crazy because it was hard for me to point out things that may not have worked, everything was just about perfect. I remember seeing trailers and I was kinda of worried about the actor playing Kirk, in the end he nailed it and he didnt try to imitate Shatner in any way. I was overly impressed with Spock, there was couple times during the film where I was like "damn, he's such a *****e" but that was only because Quinto's delivery was outstanding, he really gave you the feeling that his emotions couldnt be compromised and it was his way or no way. BTW I bursted out laughing when he caught Kirk with the nerve pinch, when Kirk was fighting those guards, I was saying to myself "Spock isn't gonna let this go on for too much longer."

I'm really looking forward to a sequel, just hope they dont try and rush to get one out. I would rather Abrams take just as much time with the sequel as he did with the first one. I dont own any of the Star Trek films, I've watched a few of them, but I know I WILL be buying this when it comes out on dvd.

Netflix put season one of the original star trek on the on demand box and I just started watching it. In the first episode -- The Man Trap -- Uhura was all flirty with Spock. It took me by surprise. :p I wasn't expecting it.

Check aintitcool.com's talkback. 95% negative.

I quit reading boards at AICN years ago because all it consists of is frantic complaining about everything in the universe and trying to work the F word into every sentence.

Saw it Thursday evening, thought I'd write up a little review.

Background Going In

I remember watching TNG with my father when I was eight years old. It gave me nightmares. Y'see, I'd ask to stay up past my bedtime watch up until the 30 minute break, when everything was bleakest. I'd imagine the horrible fate that would befall these nice people and I simply couldn't take the suspense. I'd go to bed early, and wake up in cold sweats with visions of the Enterprise-D being crushed, or overrun by who knows what.

By the time I was a teenager, DS9 and Voyager were in full swing and I would watch them so happily and religiously. DS9 was a bit deeper than my mind went typically, but I' liked seeing a black guy in charge for once, and thought the Daxes were hot. And then, y'know, Worf is the man. It was just all so rich and intelligent, but there was still action and adventure and I felt like I could watch this forever. Then, boarding school came and Star Trek remained kind of 'one of those things I used to do.'

News of the new movie came, and I knew from day one, there'd be fan backlash, but with JJ, it'd be a great movie, if not an awesome move, and fans would then start liking it and prasing JJ's dirty socks. Its just all so predictable. I was interested though, even read the Prequel Comics leading up to the film while I was in the comics store one day.

What I loved in General

Before, I was a Star Trek fan, I was a movie goer, and before that, a human being and consumer of entertainment. As that person, I had a lot of fun with this movie. The first thing that struck me, even before the art direction or set design or cinematography, were the relationships between the characters. Kirk and Bones. Uhura and Spock. Turning Kirk and Spock into rivals was really a very brilliant way to wrap a plot around exploring their relationship.

I think the scale and the color is what got me next, the set design. Everything was so... crisp. It seemed 'right' for the future, moreso than some of the other more fantastical or pragmatic Sci-Fi concepts. The Scifi wasn't about the technological development, per se, but it was about the vibe, and the vibe was 'today, but newer' and it was a catchy vibe indeed.

Then, I think there are a lot of little touches that the movie got right. The way the parental issues played out, the way that characters that could have been minor and expendable, like Sulu and Chekov, wound up being endearing and supremely useful, even if not fleshed out as well as the main attractions, Kirk and Spock.

Now, I was never a big fan of main characters, I like more quirky characters who aren't worshiped by the plot, it feels more like something I can relate to... but this movie gave Kirk his comuppance, not only did he never win a fistfight, but he was actually reprimanded for cheating at the Kobayashi Maru instead of being able to ******** his way to captain while cheating. And then Spock, who nearly took over the movie, got handled by Kirk, and needed Uhura, and got put in place by his father and older self. It. Was. Beautiful.

I think the villain was scary by way of power, but not by maliciousness, and I loved the way he said "Christopher" addressing Pike. It was really on the road to becoming an epic villain... more on that later.

The quotes were endless. "Are you afraid or aren't you!?" it just didn't stop. It was awesome.

"I'm going to throw up in your lap."

What I loved as a Star Trek Fan...

This. Was. Awesome. They did ALL of the Trek one-liners, just once. Enough to recognize it, but noting was overdone. They had all of the great characters there and they were all great for their jobs. Uhura, of all people was useful, as well as elevated to a core part of the crew emotionally. That was exceptionally awesome. Chekov's accent could have easily gone to slapstick, but they didn't, and he turned from the strange boy who can't say 'v' into the wunderkind, making miracles. Sulu not only saved Kirk, but if he hadn't left the parking break on, they all would've died at Neros weaponry in the first twenty minutes of the movie. Even Pike took out romulans as soon as he was free from his days of captivity... it was so great. Everyone, in their own way, got to be a star. They got to be cool. They got to be necessary. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. JJ treated the characters with even more respect that the original series.

The quotes were endless. "I don't need a doctor, I *am* a doctor." It just didn't stop. It was awesome.

Warp was so cool... I couldn't wait, when I knew it was about to happen. I felt like I was being taken to warp, honestly. It was that cool.

And finally, after years of watching trek, I finally like Kirk. That, for several reasons, is quite an accomplishment.

What I didn't like

Keep in mind, I was glued to the screen, and happily for 127 minutes last Thursday, but the more I think about the movie, the more I realize that it just wasn't finished. There were still some thing's missing. I don't know if the runtime prevented it, or if it just wasn't possible for some reason. But there were a few things this movie needed to become the ultimate move, to me.

First, more Nero. He was great as he was, but with 20 more minutes of screen time, he could have been Khaaaaaaan!!-level. Bana's certainly capable, but Nero didn't have a resonate origin story, neither did he have ample time to develop a rapport with the heroes. The first time they meet him, he's about to die. Just a few more moments with Pike, calling him Christopher, or speaking to Kirk and referring to him as James, or using personal digs with Spock could have been really and truly epic. I think a final hand to hand showdown with Kirk aboard the Narada trading barbs would have worked as well. Anything to give us time to hate and love Nero. He had a lot of potential.

Second, banter between Chekov and Sulu. These guys were right next to each other 90% of the time, and they had no resonant relationships on the ship. They could have easily been a bit of a comic relief team, especially considering the actors, and the characters. Chekov as the excitable genius and Sulu as the more level headed reserved professional. A few back and forths with them could have made them highlights, and given us a reason to want to see them other than the fact that they were there, or are TOS characters.

Third, a Klingon tease in the credits. I know its trite, it's been done, and etcetera, but I wanted to see some hardcore badass Klingons. I know about the scene that got cut, but I'd love to have seen those guys first hand, especially licking their wounds and setting a new aggressive course for their empire after the bulk of their fleet got Annihilated.

Finally, the score is slowly growing on me, but it seemed a little too Superheroey the first time I heard it. It almost seemed generic, in a way, and I'm not sure that it can be iconic, really.

Oh well... see you in three years guys.

Loved the movie. The cast was fantastic. The action, emotional and comedic scenes all worked a lot. My wife simply became a trekker after seeing this film.

The only problem for me was that scene in which Kirk meets Spock Prime in the cave. Too much of a coincidence. But that doesn't hurt the movie at all for me.

Ive never been a Trek fan but I thoroughly enjoyed this, I mean Ive seen a lot of the old Kirk episodes, a number of TNG episodes and some of the older movies but it's never been something Ive been a huge fan of, so i entered this movie with an open mind and anticipating it mainly due to JJ Abram's involvement and the exciting trailers.

Now having said that the first compliment I need to give is the way the young cast work as the classic series characters, they really did a superb job of capturing the essence while making them their own.

As origin stories go I feel the movie works really well, making it easy to get into and rewarding for those that are already invested in the mythology.
It's relentlessly paced but there's enough character moments in there to get you into the adventure the heroes find themselves in.

It never aims to be deep or reinvent sci fi, but what it does do is bring a sense of spectacular fun not seen in quite some time. The character banter is brisk and snappy, the SFX excellent and the action sequences thrilling, the Halo jump to the drill platform and subsequent battle between Kirk, Sulu and the two Romulan's had my adrenaline pumping.

Perhaps my favourite part of the movie is when Spock sends Kirk to the ice planet and he meets old Spock, it's a superb backdrop that contrasts with the rest of the movie's space set futuristic scenes, it features a neat action sequence with some huge monster chasing Kirk and then some excellent scenes with old Spock and finally Scotty.

Of the actors Chris Pine is the stand out as Kirk with a performance that will catapult him to stardom, and Eric Bana, though a little underutilized, keeps the right side of camp in a fearsome and totally committed turn as the villain Nero. Zachary Quinto delivers a fine Spock that avoids being a parody and Zoe Saldana is sexy and strong as Uhura, while Anton Yelchin gives an enjoyable performance as Checkov.

The only complaints I have are minor, some of the editing was a bit erratic, the odd choice of red blob drop close ups during the big end explosion was a bad one and the camera shook at times it didn't need too, plus it could be said that a slower build would have yielded a more balanced film, but overall I'd have to say that Star Trek is one of the most purely entertaining blockbusters in years and a fantastic slice of action packed Sci Fi escapism.

I'm the same as a lot of others; not a "fan", never watched the show and only saw two of the previous films; yet I know the basics of Star Trek. That was enough that I understood everything and the small easter eggs in the film. I thoroughly enjoyed the film; the visuals were great, as was the acting and action. It felt very well-balanced story wise, and I was not expecting Leonard Nimoy in the film, so that was a nice surprise. The movie also didn't feel like it was just over two hours, in fact it felt shorter and left me wanting more. All in all I'd say it was excellent and a great film to see whether you're a fan or not.

I do consider myself a Star Trek fan, I don't know if I'm a "trekkie", meaning I don't go around dressed up in pointy ears. However, I realize that the Star Trek material that catered to the fans are really what destroyed the franchise. Go figure, that it would take a non-fan, like Abrams to ressurect the franchise.

This is one of thost cases where, when you work closely enough with something to not get an outside perspective you are doomed to fail. Which is what happened with Star Trek, up until now. I thought they had a chance to get things right with Enterprise, but they even botched that.

I can say, that I've never been more excited for Star Trek, than I am now. The franchise has new life, and can go in a fresh new direction. The best thing about the ending of the movie, is the next movie can literally go anywhere. Klingons, Romulans, Khan, whatever. Trek fans may not like the changes, but I think they will appreciate the story telling the writers will be able to do, without feeling confined to some "cannon" that already exists.

Brilliant move by Abrams and company.

Anyone else love the scene with Spock confronting the Vulcan councel or whatever about admission and mentions his disadvantage. It's so well acted.

Y'know, one thing really irked me about this movie...where the hell was Welshie!?!

Quinto was pitch perfect as young reboot Spock. I'm not sure if there was anyone out there that could have played this Role right now.

yeah that was prolly my fav scene.

that mom was hot. who is she?

Second favorite scene after Kirk eating and apple during the simulation scene. I call that scene your mention the Vulcan way for Spock too give the Vulcan council the finger. For no one had refused exceptence before.
