i was going to put this in the 'do you believe in magic' thread, but it seemed a different enough subject to warrant a new thread.

i went to one of those hypnosis comedy shows a while back, and a good friend of mine volunteered to go up, and came back down an hour or so later not remembering a thing. she was answering imaginary phone calls in the guy next to her's arm pit, and all kinds of other weirdness was going on. when the hypnotist was done, he told everyone (about 10 people) that they wouldn't remember anything about being up on stage, and that they'd be okay with it. and, to this day, we tell regina all the weird crap that went on up there, and she just shrugs and goes "hm... i don't really recall any of that. oh, well."

so, what are your thoughts?

I don't know
I've always wanted to try it

I've been hypnotized. And no, I didn't quack like a duck...it's just a way to relax yourself and be slightly more open to suggestion, but it's not like any of the crap that most people would expect from hypnotism. To my experience, it's used to relieve anxiety about certain things, or to help people talk about things that may have been traumatic. Hell, you could even perform it on yourself with relative ease.

i think they just try and bore you so much, that you just fall asleep

Beers opens me a lot more to suggestion

It's fake. I think. She may just be playing you guys for suckers, possibly. My friend got "hypnotized" when some guy came. He did a bunch of stuff but the main thing was at the end he kept giving the guy his wallet.

I dunno, I think he was just going along with it. He said he didn't remember...Seems fake to me.

Did you even read my post?

I've been hypnotized twice. It is for real, I kid you not. It was a college program. I didn't remember much coming out of hypnosis, but I watched the video's they took of the programs and I did some weird stuff.

The guy (Jim Wand was his name) had me perform as Michael Jackson crotch-grab, pseudo-moonwalk and all. Then i was a show dog for my owner who was the girl in the seat next to me...needless to say there was some funny stuff there.

The biggest thing I got credit for was when he placed a balloon dog in front of me and this girl saying it was a pissed off Rotweiler and if we moved it would attack. We didn't move a muscle. THen he kicked the balloon and barked like it was attacking. I attacked back, tackled it and popped it. THe crowd went wild on the tape. 'pparently I just "saved" that girl :D

When he brought us out, I really did feel good and had little recollection of what I did. I had to watch the tape to bring it back to me. My buddies thought it was hilarious, and frankly I was embarrassed at some of the crap I did :O, as I would never have acted like such an ass in front of so many people on my own.

Verdict from me...Hypnosis IS REAL, and I do recommend it...I got a few numbers from girls who saw me onstage and thought I was fun.;)

Yeah...I don't see the connection or understand why you're asking. Everyone had experiences with it, your experiences have not changed anything.

Yeah, but you're operating under the assumption that hypnosis is always some sort of big comedy act where people do outrageous things under the influence of hypnosis. Thus you say it's "not real".

And I'm saying "Uh, yeah it is. It's used as psychological treatment n'stuff, and is often times less showy than it's usually believed to be."

My parents were hypnotized, I think shortly after I was born, to stop smoking. It worked, for a while. But apparently it didn't work as well on my dad, cause he started smoking again. It worked 100% on my mom, but after my dad started she did too. So yeah, hypnotism is real, and it works. Just can't have millions of mindless slaves like in the movies.

(Happy ending, after discovering my mom was pregnant in 2000, they both quit once and for all. They had quit when they were having my brother and I, but started up again.)

Wouldn't those simply be two different types of hypnosis? His question was about the showy kind. The mental type is vastly different that kind is "look back into your childhood, relax tell me this tell me that think back so that you can solve your problem. It's just me and you..no one else will hear what you're telling me" NOT "bark like a dog and tell the audience how many times you *********e to embarrass yourself"

And that's what I was saying is fake. The type he was asking about. The medical kind isn't for show and is not a random thing to entertain people. It's you and your doctor/psychaiatrist/whatever trying to help you.

My mistake. I understood this thread as to be about hypnosis in general.

I hate using this phrase but...

My bad.

see the thing about the showy kind is it really works, but it is like a heightened state of relaxation, you are still essentially in control, it's just the majority of inhibitions that keep you from doing goofy crap go away. It's kind of like How it gets easier to talk to hot girls after a few (like 1 or2) drinks. YOu are more relaxed and willing to do things, but you still know enough to say when. You can't be hypnotized into doing something against your moral code, but you can be encouraged to let out your inner goofball, hence entartainment hypnosis.

It's cool, because you were right though. The kind of hypnosis you went and dealt with is real. While the other kind is just like how a magician says "Wanna see me pull a rabbit out of my hat?" to entertain the audience.

I hate my computer...I'm always lagging and people always post before me!! *reads Superman's post*

Going into an inner zen/wabi is different then doing things, not remembering, and dancing around in front of an audience. That kind of hypnosis suggests that you can make them do anything you command.

But the thing is, I DIDN'T remember it. Not clearly, but once my memory was refreshed with the tape, I got it. THat's why they are suggestions. He suggest it, and you are SOOO relaxed that you do it figuring while your mind is thinking "why the hell not?". you concentrate so hard on the suggestion that it seems real.

its hard to explain unless you've actually been under...I really recommend it. It is pretty cool.

As for the anything command, it is within reason. Your deepest core unconsious (like personality) is uneffected by the suggestions, so if it is anything outside your morals or overall sense of "self" you won't do it. This is why most entertainment hypnosis is just goofy stuff, cause they couldn't suggest anything more or it wouldn't work.

I'm seriously not reading all that.. :)

Hypnotism is for real. I saw it on some fat show were this fat guy was hypnotized so each time he saw the color red, he would be reminded to stay on track with his diet. Anyway, the fat guy got thin.

Believe it or not.

Hypnosis is real, but you have to be willing to undergo it or have an extremely submissive personality.

needless to say, I've never been hypnotized :)

They did a MindFreak episode on it. The setting was Planet Hollywood & this waitress got hypnotized & ate it on the ground with all the food she had in her hand. That was cool.:o:up:

I will never...ever get up for one of those programs. NEVER
